Title: Rebuy puzzle
Post by: Pyso on November 14, 2009, 08:06:59 PM
Here is one for the maths geeks. At which point in a rebuy tournament does your chip accumulation become so great that buying the add-on at the end of the rebuy period becomes pointless?

Or do you just always take it regardless, even if it increases your stack by a small percentage? Surely there must be a cut off point where the cost doesn't justify the gain in chips?

Depends on yr skill advantage. If you have a big edge then the add-on is worth more.

Obviously the add-on decreases in value as your stack grows. Had a quick look at Bill Chen's Mathematics of Poker book and he seems to think that the add-on won't be worth it if you have more than 8 or 9 buy-ins in chips.

If the add-on is discount price, i.e. rebuys are 1000 chipsm add-on is 1500 chips, then you should almost always add-on.

Yeah, I was always under the impression that should always add-on unless you had 9* the add-ons value in chips or more, with the exception of an uber add-on

Not a problem I've had to consider very often!

So your saying in a 10 runner rebuy you have 8x starting chips you would take the addon but in a 10,000 runner field if you had 10x you wouldn't?

Good point, well made.

There probs aren't many times when you shouldn't add on so easier to just always add-on I guess...

depends
in the 10 runner comp if the buy in is for 100 bbs and there has only been around 6 or 7 rebuys and i have 8x average i might not add on

in the 10000 runner event the buy in is 10 bbs and there has been over 1million rebuys and i might add on

I rebuy in most competitions i play if I have the chance except for maybe crapshoot rebuys like Napoleons where you only get 1000 chips for £20 at the add on stage when you come back to 100-200 blinds this seems pretty pointless...

If I'm playing say a £20 dc and i have 50,000 chips at the add on stage from 5,000 I would probably still add on for the other 5000 chips...

Three things affect my decision: field size, size of my stack, and how many buyins i've had.

I'm less likely to add on in a game with only a few runners.

I'm less likely to add on when I have a big stack (6 buyins or there abouts).

I'm less likely to add on if I haven't used any rebuys. I think there's a certain merit in being able to play the comp with only 1 buyin. Taking the addon (assuming same price) is doubling your buyin to the comp without making any (noticable) difference to the prize money.

One final factor is how much £££ it's worth. £20 or less and I prob just decide not to be a stingy bastard and take it anyway.
