Title: Re: GUKPT Grand Final Festival thread Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2009, 05:48:13 PM GUKPT Rankings Race Goes to the Wire
The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour awards £50,000 in prizes to the top performing players. Players receive ranking points for making the final table of all main events and side events on the tour and for the Grosvenor Casinos National Poker League. The first prize is £20,000 plus the title of GUKPT Player of the Year. Going into the Grand Final festival, the top players on the leaderboard were: 1st - Martin Silke - 329.5 pts 2nd - David Johnson - 302 pts 3rd - John Miller - 258.5 pts 4th - Robert Topp - 244 pts 5th - Steven Vigor - 244 pts 6th - Sunny Chattha - 242 pts 7th - Richard Gryko - 230 pts 8th - Jeff Kimber - 228 pts However, with wins in the £300 NL Hold'em Freezeout and the £500 PL Omaha Freezeout at the Grand Final festival, Karl Mahrenholz has moved up from 168 to 303 pts. Richard Gryko, who won the £1,000 NL Hold'em Freezeout has also moved up the table to 305 pts. The current standings are: 1st - Martin Silke - 329.5 pts 2nd - Richard Gryko - 305 pts 3rd - Karl Mahrenholz - 303 pts 4th - David Johnson - 302 pts Heads Up For the Title? However, both Martin Silke and Richard Gryko have also been playing in the £5,000 GUKPT UK Heads Up Championship this week and both have made it to the final. Silke, who defeated Victoria Coren in an 8-hour first round match claimed his place in the final after beating Tom Bentham in the semi-finals. Gryko defeated World Heads Up Champion Bambos Xanthos in his semi-final match, which lasted just one hand. Both players had flopped two pairs on an A-7-9 board but Gryko's A-7 dominated Xanthos's 9-7. The final between Silke and Gryko takes place at 3pm on Wednesday 25th November at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino. Only eight players participated in this tournament, but with 125 ranking points awarded to the winner and 100 to the runner up, the heads up final could be decisive in determining the outcome of the GUKPT rankings. If Gryko wins the final, he will be half a point clear of Silke with just a few ranking events left at this week's Grand Final festival and next week's Champion of Champions festival in Luton. If Silke wins he will extend his lead to 49.5 points, but with both players expected to enter all remaining ranking events, it will still be far from over, regardless of who triumphs on Wednesday. Overstacked The starting stack for the GUKPT Grand Final (starts on Thursday 26th November) has been increased to 20,000. It has also been decided recently to increase next year's GUKPT main event starting stacks to 15,000. There will be some minor adjustments to the structure - no levels will be removed but the running antes will come in two levels earlier. Title: Re: GUKPT Grand Final Festival thread Post by: Cottonbud on November 25, 2009, 01:54:43 AM Hi Jonathan really like the idea of a 15k starting stack, excellent suggestion. The antes coming in 2 levels earlier.. does this mean 100/200 with an ante right away?

Title: Re: GUKPT Grand Final Festival thread Post by: Cottonbud on November 25, 2009, 07:51:54 PM Hello again Jonathan, do you have the results of the side events that have been played?
I know one result on who the top 3 was think it was the £300 rebuy. 1st Karl "Lerch" Mahrenholz followed by Priyan and Andy Seden in 2nd and 3rd but I have no idea on the other results. The 1500 event at the Vic will probably also have a 15k stack. The results from the side events can be found on the gukpt site on the live page. Mike Hill has also previously graced a GUKPT main event final, while the remaining competitors, including World Heads Up Champion Bambos Xanthos are appearing on a GUKPT final table for the fist time. Betting on the final table will be available first thing on Sunday morning on tour sponsor Blue Square Poker's sportsbook, www.bluesq.com. Happy now, but the last pot was pretty crushing. The Italian was just amazing; at one stage he played 11 pots in a row, he just refused to pass anything. I raised AQ, he peeled A10 in position. Flop was A95. I overbet the pot with 80k, to make sure that, if he called, there would be 250k in the pot, and 250k left in my stack, and so it would effectively be all in on the flop. Turn ten; I still had to play my hand for big value, and all the chips went in for a 750k pot. Obviously, it would be ignorant of me to think it was unlucky, as I had been pretty lucky yesterday to get there. Was going to write that Iversen will win, but just seen the updates! Cascarino big CL with 4 left, gl to all. Title: Re: GUKPT Grand Final Festival thread Post by: TightEnd on November 30, 2009, 10:34:05 AM Press release
Former professional footballer Tony Cascarino has won the Grand Final of the 2009 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour. The ex Republic of Ireland international scored a £168,800 payday by outclassing a field of 183 players in the Blue Square Poker sponsored GUKPT’s showpiece event at the Grosvenor Victoria casino in London. The tournament included some of the best poker players from the UK and Europe, who all paid £3,000 to enter the four day tournament. This was the second time that Cascarino has tasted victory on the UK’s largest poker tour. His first victory came just over a year ago when he won the Bolton leg of the 2008 tour. It was his third GUKPT main event final table, having also finished in 6th place in last year’s Grand Final. His win takes him to the top of the all-time GUKPT money list, with almost £250,000 in winnings. His heads up opponent was Frenchman Antoine Arnault, a keen amateur from Paris who is the Head of Communications for avant-garde fashion house Louis Vuitton. Both players went into the final with the lowest chip counts of the final nine, but remarkably ended up as the last men standing. After Arnault eliminated Philip Patrick in 3rd place the two players went head-to-head for the title with Cascarino enjoying a chip lead of 2.1m to 1.4m. It was an intriguing conclusion to the tournament, which saw the Frenchman fight back and reverse the chip count. However the former Chelsea and Celtic striker drew level and then recaptured the lead with a commanding 3m to 0.6m chip lead. He was then one card away from victory when holding A-2 versus Q-T, but just when they thought it was all over, his opponent spiked a fourth spade on the river to make a flush. Arnault continued to fight back and was almost level once again when the final hand took place. Again Cascarino held A-2 (both hearts) in a pot that saw almost a third of the chips find their way into the middle preflop. Arnault moved all in on a T-J-8 (one heart) flop and Cascarino called. Arnault held T-9 of hearts for one pair and a straight draw. The turn card was the jack of hearts and the five of hearts on the river gave Cascarino the nut flush and with that he took down the title. During post-match analysis Cascarino commented on his win. “I’ve been moaning all year, ‘cos nothing good has really happened to me. I’ve won something (in poker) every year for the last four years, but until now 2009 has been frustrating.” Making reference to the break down of his marriage he went on to say “I got divorced earlier in the year and I’m delighted that she won’t be getting her hands on any of this. She’s already had enough out of me.” On a more upbeat note he then philosophised on his poker playing abilities “Getting respect from your peers and being acknowledged for being good at whatever you do with your life means a lot to me…I think I have proved myself now.” His opponent Antoine Arnault was gracious in defeat and will be heading back to France with £107,100 for his second place finish. Small change it may seem, as his father Bernard Arnault is the 14th richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $16.5 billion. The final table also included World Heads Up Champion Bambos Xanthos from Cyprus, who is one of London’s most successful high stakes cash game players. He finished in 6th place while another high stakes cash game player Albert Iversen from Denmark exited in 5th. 21-year old online tournament pro Daniel Millar was 4th. Italian Romano Pizzo, went into the final table as the runaway chip leader but played wildly, getting involved in almost every pot during the first hour of play. He dusted off most of his stack, then regained much of it before being eliminated in 7th place when running A-K into Cascarino’s pocket aces. Manchester bookie Mike Hill was the eighth place finisher while Stuart Rutter, who finished 5th in last year’s Grand Final completed the final table line, departing in 9th place. The Result 1st - Tony Cascarino - £168,800 2nd - Antoine Arnault - £107,100 3rd - Philip Patrick - £71,400 4th - Daniel Millar - £43,900 5th - Albert Iversen - £32,900 6th - Charalambos (Bambos) Xanthos - £27,400 7th - Romano Pizzo - £22,000 8th - Mike Hill - £16,500 9th - Stuart Rutter - £11,000 Tour Draws to a Close The 2009 GUKPT is now drawing to a close with just the Champion of Champions festival still to take place. It starts straight away on Monday 30th November at the G Casino in Luton, with a week of warm up events before the £100,000 Champion of Champions tournament takes place. This prestigious event is an invite only tournament and the only way to get an invite is to win a GUKPT tournament. The five warm up events that take place in Luton this week represent the last chance to qualify for it. The race to win the £20,000 first prize for topping the GUKPT rankings also looks set to go to the wire as Richard Gryko holds a slender half a point lead over Martin Silke. They are over 100 points clear of their nearest rivals in the race to be crowned the GUKPT Player of the Year. Ranking points are earned by making the final tables in all GUKPT tournaments. Both players are expected to participate in all of the warm up events this week. GUKPT Continues in 2010 The schedule for the 2010 GUKPT has now been released and it has been confirmed that £200,000 in added prizes will be provided by Grosvenor/G Casinos and online partner gcasino.com. Full details of the 2010 tour can be found online at www.gukpt.com Title: Re: GUKPT Grand Final Festival thread Post by: TightEnd on November 30, 2009, 10:42:38 AM .

I played with him for a few hours on day 1. And although he wouldn't argue with me if I said he was completely run over by the deck (well, to get a stack like his, Phil Ivey would have needed to have run like God). I will say he maximised his good fortune by playing his rush really well and winning as many chips as he could. Definitely the most accomplished celeb poker player I played against and seemed like a pretty nice fella too.
