Title: iPhone Apps
Post by: Blatch on December 08, 2009, 02:00:52 AM
Thought it would be a good idea to have a thread about decent aps out there that others may like but not know about.

I added teh updated Red Laser today and is incredibly good.  Basically you can scan any barcode and it virtually instantly gives you the prices of the item in all stores around your current location and is quite worrying just how different they can be.  Currently £1.19 but worth it.

So what other apps areout there worth having?

Scrabble is just the ultimate. Also good to play against a less inteligant mate who isnt aware of the best word option and wants to play for cold hard cash.

Also SkySports score centre.

Did your friend develop it himself or get someone in to do it?

I've got a couple of ideas which I would like to explore the possibility of creating for the Iphone.

I have an app I want someone to make.

Basically, I spend far too much of my time on pub quiz machines. And mostly on Hex Maniac.

For anyone not aware it's basically a hangman game where you pick a category and you have to guess the letters making up the word.

I want an app where you specify the category, how many words/letters and the letters that have already been filled in. It then tells you using the inbuilt database which you can add to either:
a) what the answer is
or
b) what the answer still can be and which letter occurs in the most words

eg, 4 letters for bedroom might be WHIP or LAMP or TELE so it suggests you try P. If it's not P then it knows that the answer is TELE. If P is there then you have to take the 50/50 guess.

Someone make it please. Can also apply it to Pints Make Prizes but the timer on that is too fast really :(

you need to be able to code to create app's. I think my mate did it in C++ not 100% sure will have to confirm that. Took him 2-3 months freelance after leaving streetmap.

I believe its very profitable to create app's that are popular.

I've been looking into getting an iphone on a monthly tariff.

The question is do i need a 32gb one or can i make do with a 16gb,do the apps require a lot of memory space?fwiw i won't be using it as a music ipod as i've already got all my music on one.

Any advice?

Title: Re: iPhone Apps

The only things I use the space up for (and i've had a 16gb one since they came out) is music, poker vids and apps. After the first days app downloading i've not downloaded anymore. Without music/movies I cant imagine you'd use up 16gb.

Sleep Cycle is awesome.

It makes a graph of how well you slept (interesting to look at in its own right) and the alarm clock is designed to wake you up when you're drifting awake rather than abruptly pulling you out of deep sleep like most do.

Hard to describe on here but it really is awesome. I'd suggest giving it a go :)

iPhone good features...

Internet is the nuts on a nice sized clear screen, you can zoom in by double tapping the screen or using your index finger and thumb in a pincher style movement. You can turn the phone on its side and it changes view. Pretty quick loading pages, u can also have numerous pages open at same time like tabs on your home computer. Bookmarks etc.

Texting takes a bit of getting used to on the qwerty pad but its fine. You can keep all the messages from one person on the same message like a msn convo.

Email is fine for what i use it for.

iPod on your phone so no need to take an extra device with you and the 32gb 3GS version should hold lots of apps music and videos etc. Ive got over 3000 songs on mine atm and its not even quarter full!

The apps are cool, lots of games, football score centre app is usefull, facebook is very good, there is too many apps to mention! You can also get tomtom if you drive etc

Camera is not the best but its ok for what i use it for!

Hope this helps sway you to the iPhone!

plus Apps to download

RedLaser - scan any barcode and it will tell you the price at any store close buy and the price on the internet - comet hate you using it

Sky sprts- Add your club for all the info on match days

Poker journal- keeps track of all your live poker,   Bankroll, Avg games wins ITM% then brakes it down to what days your winning on,  cash games brakes down hourly rate

Good idea

Don't have an i-phone/touch, but they are being used over here. The US mil is beginning to kit their guys out with this stuff and already has designs on the i-Pad. They are already dishing this stuff out - and they are looking to piggyback/partner with apple/miccrosoft rather than developing their own expensive (and usually heavy/crap systems like our Bowman)...

One example is for snipers, for mapping the flight of their rounds:

http://www.gizmag.com/bullet-flight-100--the-us15-iphone-app-for-snipers/10801/ (http://www.gizmag.com/bullet-flight-100--the-us15-iphone-app-for-snipers/10801/)

Oh and some other uses such as translator, photo identikit etc...

Not really if you do it right.

Ive heard jailbreaking can brick my phone?

Whilst this is always possible if you follow the instructions outlined above and do exactly what it says then you should not encounter any problems. You must realise that jailbreaking is against apples terms and conditions. Jailbreaking is undertaken at your own risk and I will not be held responsible for any problems you encounter whilst following any information within this guide!

Is jailbreaking reversible?

In short, yes. Most problems that you may encounter with jailbreaking can be rectified with a resore in itunes.

Can I update the phones software whilst its jailbroken?

If you install a software update it will remove the jailbreak and remove the unlock. Before it is best to wait for information from the dev team regarding a new jailbreak and the release of the software is necessary.

Finished the Angry Birds finally. 7-13 is a bitch. Right here what you gotta do. Fling the bomb bird over the ship and bomb the cement platform on othe side killing pig underneth. Then use the wood bird to knock out the middle wooden structure. This will then fall down and kill pigs in middle and crash through bottom and finish it off. It's hard but it works. Good luck

Drop the bombs just before you hit the sides this will catapult the bird to the side/underside. Work your way across and Bob's your uncle.
Got a high score of 112150 doing it that way using all the birds.

yes there are, previously there were only 7 worlds with about 20 levels in each world. when you update, there is another 8 world, with 15 new levels in it.

its in the 3 game called 3. Danger Above, scroll along 2 screens and you'll find it where it used to say Coming soon!

For anyone renting a car in the US and wanting to avoid hiring a Sat Nav, Co Pilot Live USA is available for £2.99 at the moment (presumably an offer of some sort).

Judging by the demo mode it looks pretty slick and appears to have all the features of the ones available for rental.

The UK and European versions are 'full price' so am assuming that the £2.99 cost isn't permanent.

For all you "Poker Journal" fans make sure you back up your cash and tourney db as my 3GS upgrade had a hiccup and I had to start again and restore my backup. This worked great however and IMO the move to version 4 is well worth it for the "folder" feature alone! I must say I am also getting better battery life, it seems that email push is working better somehow?

Best football management game to get?
Best music/radio type app?
Best other games to get?
Any other quality stuff that really is a must please?
Whats best for books?

Saves me reading the whole thread again having done so last week and there may well be some that you have just got which are quality?

Thanks in advance!

Update on this, just back from the US and it worked a treat.  Well worth the cost, would possibly even buy it at full price.

It downloads fully onto the phone, so no expensive data roaming, but it's worth switching off the roaming when in use so that it doesn't look for traffic updates, etc.

Also, make sure you have a car charger as it absolutely eats up the battery when in use.

Amazing value though.

Do you have the iBooks (free) App installed..... if you do then they should appear in that library (separate PDF tab at the top) .... down loading PDF files straight from the net will also place them in the iBooks library.

Hope this helps, if not just say and I'll look into it further.

I download the new software onto my 3GS and it was crushing the battery life.

If anyone else is suffering the same here is a tip:

Double click the menu button  and the bottom will change to all the apps which are running in the background.  Hold down any app, till u get the x come up, then deletethem all periodically. Works a treat ;0)

I have 3GS, and dont think ill ever upgrade to 4, too many fuck ups with 4, and it not worth it just to have multiple running apps.

Im happy with 3GS

wow, didn't realise that, I had all my apps running in the background!

How do you stop them from continuing to run once you've exited them or do you have to do this every time/once in a while?  I assumed just leaving the app stopped it from running.

Cheers for the tip :)

The ibetmate app is absolutely fantastic.  This could actually ruin my marriage.  Just learning a bit of football trading winning pence to a couple of quid and I can't get off the thing.

For those that don't know, it's the Betfair app, not the official one, that's poo.

GG life.

Betfair app
Alarm clock
