Title: Christmas lunch Post by: Dingdell on December 24, 2009, 08:38:52 PM So tomorrow many of us will be sitting down to Christmas lunch.
At the Dingdell household we will be having: Smoked salmon and avocado terrine with sweet chilli sauce (just finished and in the fridge) Followed by roast rib of beef with all the trimmings including home made yorkshires (fml) Christmas pudding presented with an eerie glow of blue flame as we set light to it, accompanied by oohs and aaahs and then the annual discussion about how no one actually likes christmas pudding. Cheeseboard - always overloaded and rarely touched. During the day we will be trying to avoiding the following: 1. Discussing my fathers divorce - despite it happening over 25 years ago it is discussed every year. 2. Discussing my Dad's marriage proposal to his girlfriend who is the same age as me (you go Dad ;applause;) 3. Discussions about my job. 4. Talking about dead relatives - christmas for me becomes a time of mourning and it isn't christmas unless I have been in tears at least twice as everyone chats about the dead people. 5. Poker and gambling as my Dad is a hater of cards. 6. Burning anything apart from the pudding. 7. Just about everything else as it so easily becomes contentious. During the day we will be doing the following: 1. laughing merrily at everyones cracker jokes 2. Wearing paperhats throughout lunch 3. Listening to the Queens speech at 1 4. ooohing and aaahing as we open the socks etc etc 5. gathering as many happy memories of the day as we can in our minds in case we don't make it back this way next year 6. Toasting absent friends 7. Worrying about whether the sky plus will manage to tape Doctor Who 8. Sleeping well that night after a day of excess. Whatever you do tomorrow I hope you have as happy and familiar christmas as I will - it's what we make it - and at the Dingdell christmas lunch we make it bearable! Merry Christmas everyone - see you at the other side. xx Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: lazaroonie on December 25, 2009, 12:13:01 AM we were due to have 16 here tomorrow. but my wee nephew ended up in the hospital today getting his appendix whipped out, so things are a bit up in the air. we are having 1 vegetarian meaning we have a few interesting dishes on the menu.

Only thing I'm sure of...I'll do NOTHING right tomorrow, despite having nothing to do. Sure am looking forward to it.

Anyone ever had a turducken? Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: ACE2M on December 25, 2009, 11:49:00 AM strangely the mrs brother is doing lamb, could be a bit strange.
I've sorted the booze, cheeseboard and port so that bit will definitely be good. Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: Scottish Dave on December 25, 2009, 01:06:19 PM prawn cocktail Soup turkey, roasties with goose fat, parsnip, yorkshires, carrots, sprouts, pigs in blankets etc etc. Trifle and Caramel Shortcake Almost identical, apart from soup and Trifle! The trifle was my doing last night mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: bobby1 on December 25, 2009, 04:29:11 PM We are so very lucky, poor old Heston Blumenthal cooked a starter of Whale vomit, followed by chocolate doormouse and a Venison cooked and then replaced in its own skin again on his show last night.
It made my Turkey with Roasties and veg seem quite bland really Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: Marky147 on December 25, 2009, 05:31:12 PM We are so very lucky, poor old Heston Blumenthal cooked a starter of Whale vomit, followed by chocolate doormouse and a Venison cooked and then replaced in its own skin again on his show last night. Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: Rod Paradise on December 25, 2009, 11:01:01 PM Had a simple dinner this year - no starters - straight into Turkey (which I'd brined - made a huge difference to how moist it was) - roasties in goose fat, 3 types of stuffing, roast parsnips, roast shallots & roast carrots, sprouts fried with bacon & butter, pigs in blankets & cheddar mash.
Wee sis made a cheesecake - half with cream cheese & lemon curd topping, half with white chocolate cream. Mum made a chocolate roll yule log cake. The christmas pud is still in its pot & will be fried in brandy butter to go with the breakfast fryup. Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on December 25, 2009, 11:05:17 PM I made the dinner this year, no special stuff and hardly any green crap too.
Turkey and Beef, Roast Spuds, Peas & Yorkshires. Also had soup for starters. Doesn't sound much but it was loverly. Got shitloads of meat left though as just me and Ling this year and we had a massive Turkey Crown and long load of Beef. Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: tikay on December 25, 2009, 11:12:30 PM Mr Karabiner cooked me THE most splendid non-Christmas Christmas Dinner. He's a very fine Peas (token green veg intake), the most delicious rib of beef I've ever eatened, Roasties (boiled then fluffed in colander before roasting), & the most wonderful Yorkshire Puds (home-made), each as big as a bullders tea-mug. I had just the 3 of them. Chriistmas Pud & cream for afters/pudding/suite/dessert. Mr Karabiner indulged in some fine red wine, then decanted a bottle of '83 Port (not that '85 muck, Laz) & opened up the humidor to select a fine Cuban. Most pleasing. Thank you Ralph! And the Office Cat. Title: Re: Christmas lunch Post by: Claw75 on December 26, 2009, 12:12:28 AM Hmmm, little bro did well again this year. 10 of us sat down for lunch, and there was well over half the stuff he'd cooked up left over. We had deep fried camembert to start, with a whole poached salmon to pick at, followed by roast turkey, beef and ham, stuffing, pigs in blankets, little cheese and bacon things, goose fat roasties, yorkshires, roasted parsnips, carrots and sprouts, leeks, broccoli, a potato gratin thingy with cheese and spinach, finished off with the most delicious proper gravy. He also made some great chicken liver pate which we had for supper.
(not sure why this has come out sideways!) (http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs128.snc3/17568_250807545637_613415637_4892594_1713007_n.jpg) I'm still stuffed. |
