Can they really gaurentee the players safety in the summer? I know you can say that about anywhere but it is alot more likely in Africa.

Angola and South Africa are slightly different places, I think it is pretty obv that Angola is more dangerous. The England cricket team is currently touring South Africa, as have the lions without incident and they had the confederations cup there last year.

lol they are diff countries that don't even share a border whose capitals are more than 1500 miles apart!

Suppose we shouldn't have had the FA Cup when the troubles in Bosnia were going on?

Can understand why he said that though Dave. The story was linked in OP. Would have thought you'd read it before commenting, especially on such a sensitive subject as a machine gunning.

Doesn't take the largest number of brain cells to work out that a machine gun attack could involve deaths or serious injuries.

I knew this would come up, i actually typed out the apology before you had commented, but left it sitting as i had to do something for my daughter, by the time i had hit the 'submit' button you had posted it, so in my head i had posted an apology before your post.

As i say, i knew this would come up, just took offense to you calling me a ****, which was out of order!

You hadn't posted an apology and said you didn't read the story when he posted so it wasn't out of order.

Is it ok to laugh at the joke about the toga bus getting machine-gunned? I'm not sure if that is ok. If it isn't I just made a boo boo like Dave. But I don't find the fact the toga bus got machine-gunned very funny so maybe it is ok. If Dave laughed at the joke that would be a terrible boo boo.

aye, pretty shocking one that.

like how the african football association are trying to blame togo for it, cause teams are expected to fly to the event.

how the fuck can they turn round and say that? idiots.

makes you wonder about the summer too. the world cup has the potential to end up being at the heart of something really bad and really nasty. i hope not, but there are some pretty grim wars n coruption going on very near to SA, with the risk some people seeing it as a perfect target.

Define safe?

From wikipedia:

Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa. South Africa has a high rate of murders, assaults, rapes, and other crimes compared to most countries. Many emigrants from South Africa state that crime was a big factor in their decision to leave.

Total crime per capita is 10th out of the 60 countries in the dataset.

According to a survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations, South Africa was ranked first for rapes per capita.[8] One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.[9] More than 25 per cent of South African men questioned in a survey published by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in June 2009 admitted to raping someone; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person.[10][11] Three out of four who admitted rape attacked for the first time during their teens

Do footballers tend to get raped a lot? I've never really seen them as rape targets myself.

Ashley Cole might be a target.

Female supporters might be intested in that stat too.

A fair comparisom can't be made as no data is available for a lot of African countries because they can't get someone dumb enough to go in with a clipboard.

Ah another person comparing SA to wartorn parts of Africa.

It's like comparing the UK to the corruption in eastern europe.

Are you implying that South Africa is a safe place to go?

Define safe?

My cousin and her husband were telling me recently about their trip to SA.

They stayed for a few nights with pals. Lovely house, lots of land, even servants quarters!

Oh, and a bloke with a shotgun in a guard hut at the entrance to the estate...
