He is a black Labrador, working breed (which is ironic if u have met the lazy sod). I think he is funny looking, sometimes he looks like a weird Doberman/Bassett hound cross instead of a Labrador. Brilliant little dog, well behaved when he isnt eating socks. Is he keen on retrieving? hells yeah, he is very good at it, he could find a needle in a haystack. We play a mix of fetch and find type of games with him, he has a real talent for it. One time as a puppy he got free in our house (we usually keep him in the kitchen when we go out) and when we got back we went up to our bedroom to find he had found lots and lots of things around our house and put them on our bed, we found clothes, shoes, remote controls, books, letters, dvds, air fresheners etc on our bed. Title: Re: the 'Gratuitous Cutest Dog in Poker Thread' or someink Post by: maccol on February 09, 2010, 11:52:39 PM This is Duke is duke a husky? How do you find the breed? any tips? Yes,he is a Siberian Husky, now 4 years old. I am by no means an expert on the breed but from my experience with Duke and from reading and talking to other owners I would say the following- They are very social dogs with a generally gentle nature ,happy in family situations and very good with children and other dogs.I have heard of them causing damage if left alone for periods of time but Duke is a confident dog who seems happy enough if left alone ,which admittedly doesnt happen often. Unfortunately this means they do not make good guard dogs and would probably give a burglar a guided tour of your property. Huskies will take all the exercise you want to give them and then look for more.Apparently they are capable of running 100 miles a day pulling a fully laden sled.I tend to settle for 2x45 minute walks per day with more if I have the time and inclination. Due to their strong desire to run, independent spirit and intelligence huskies should not be let off the lead as they will not return until they are good and ready.I have heard of this leading to many tragic accidents.I sometimes use a particular secure area and a 4 metre line to run Duke.To watch him run in full flow, its truly wonderful. I imagine Rookie, amongst others, can relate to that. Twice a year Huskies shed their double coats. You would not believe the amount of hair this comprises.People have been known to knit jumpers out of it.(not me I hasten to add) Arm yourself with a powerful vacuum cleaner. They also LOVE digging holes in the garden, for no obvious reason,so be prepared for a messy garden. Duke is a good traveller and nothing new seems to worry or upset him. As with the choice of any breed of dog, it should really come down to your circumstances and lifestyle and how suitable that would be for a particular dog but personally I wouldnt swap Duke for the world. A good source for further info is www.siberianhuskyclub,com Title: Re: the 'Gratuitous Cutest Dog in Poker Thread' or someink Post by: EvilPie on February 10, 2010, 01:32:10 AM Have you ever tried him on a treadmill? That could be really good fun for him if he doesn't get off lead much.
You could leave him running for hours. Title: Re: the 'Gratuitous Cutest Dog in Poker Thread' or someink Post by: DaveShoelace on February 10, 2010, 07:42:34 AM Dogs on Treadmills is one of the funniest things in the world and they love it too, you can even buy a specific doggy treadmill but they are well expensive.
To anyone thinking of getting a mutt I would mirror what maccol says and go for one that suits your lifestyle, most people who have problems with dogs get one that doesn't suit their way of life (usually because they cant give them enough exercise). There are loads of great websites out there that can give people ideas which dogs would suit them and there literally is a mutt for everyone out there. |
