A few questions for any experienced guitar players out there.

1. If a string breaks can I replace just the broken one(s), or does the whole set need to be replaced? (accoustic and elec)

2. Is it possible to overstretch a string? One of mine seems to have gone well off?

3. If i tune a string to say an E, then continue to tighten it  back round to an E; r they both in tune?

4. Can you recommend anyone who gives guitar lessons in the St Albans area?

As silo said , Guitar tuner FTMFW. Its so much easier than trying to tune in by ear, I'm playing about 2 years and havent a clue how to tune in by ear so deffo aint neccessary, also tuners are pretty cheap I'm pretty sure you should'nt have to pay more than £20 for one.

got a drum kit too but little red ain't ever given it a go; she's too busy covering her ears obv

Thanks for the replies guys, and to Les for the PM.

As for the tuning, I've got an electronic tuner so I use that rather than my ear, but my question was if I tune say the low 6th to an E, I can then keep tightening it through the notes back to an E.

So how do I know which E is right? (the loose one or the tight one?!)

(I obv know nothing about music so totally dependent on the electronic tuner)

Yes, you can keep tuning to the next E.

The one you want is the first E you come to that seems to be about the right tension. Ehe E before that will be so slack it will almost hang below the fretboard, and the tight one will sound like it's going to snap.


It reminds me of that Yorkshire man who's wife died. he aske the stone mason to put this inscription on her headstone:

Lord, she is thine.

When he went to visit the grave, the inscription read:

Lord, she is thin.

The bloke goes back to the stonemason and gives him a right bollocking. "You forgot the E you daft sod, you forgot the bloody E"

The stonemason promises to put it right. The next time the bloke visits the grave, the headstone reads:

E Lord, she is thin.

Mid-life crisis obv. Only a matter of weeks before you rock up at the G in a Hendrix t-shirt imo.

He bends that string and that's all she wrote....
