Title: Do you like Haggis?
Post by: sovietsong on January 25, 2010, 08:03:01 PM
I went to the local costco (http://www.costco.co.uk/what_is_costco/what_is_costco.htm) on saturday to pick up some bulk buys.  Its the best day to go because they have ladies at the end of the isles giving away free stuff.  The lovely ladies normally have fancy cheese, meat and all sorts of treats.  With burns night coming up they had haggis and mash on offer.  My missus turned her nose up at it but i gave it a go!  Now i've never had haggis before but i must admit i thought it was rather pleasant.  Any other haggis lovers on here?

I wonder what they put in it!

When I was little, I asked my dad what a haggis was. He told me it was a little animal that lives on the slopes of the mountains in Scotland.

He told me it had two short legs on one side, and two long legs on the other so that it could stand level.

I was 15 before I realised he was kidding.

Haggis is the nuts.

Had a banging haggis stuffing at Christmas one year which was immense.

at least once a week for over 20 years

so do you boil it then or roast it?

it seems a pretty easy meal to make, can you get individual ones and which 'brand' is best?

No. I had it once with neeps and tatties. It tasted like a rubber glove that someone had used while washing their socks.

been doing some research and it seems yes is the answer to all my questions other than which brand is best, i will have to try lots of different ones to find the one i like!

Haggis is one of the best winter warmer foods there is, McSween's is the nuts. Just don't think about what's in it.

I love a bit of haggis. Will usually take it over a burger if it's on the menu at a pub lunch.

Well I'm convinced, I only had a little taste but now, with the support of blonde I'm going to buy one and have it for my tea!!

I watched a youtube clip and it seemed to suggest boiling it is better than rapping in foil and cooking in the oven.

Do the scots lads agree?

I'm neither a scot nor a lad, but boiling in big pan of water for an hour ftw

Boil that bad boy.

Keep it the fuck away from the micro. It's more hassle than boiling in terms of your input and doesn't cook evenly.

Its healthier than Black Pudding, which is made from Oats and Blood!

Expand your culture a little more. Its good for everyone.

My local butcher often has that on display, but i've never bothered to try it.

depends on the area if in an area with a lot of ex pat scots you should find a decent butcher with haggis easy

best thing to do is use the yellow pages

I was working in Clyde just before Christmas, stayed in a semi decent hotel and for evening meal I had 3 different types of Haggis for my starter. All three were gorgeous, not sure why the variety but all nice nonetheless.

Oh my god no! Take a dead sheep - cut off all the edible bits, sell them to someone - take all the remaining soft bits, mince them, add spices & stick into a stomach, call it a delicacy & feed it to Ironsides.

Sorry folks - never in a million years.

Title: Re: Do you like Haggis?

Its a strange consistancy, like nothing I've tasted before but I guess it has the taste of black pudding mixed with sausage that has a little kick to it!

I'm sure the guys that have it everyweek can do a better job than me explaining!!

Give it a go!

The poor Haggis is fast becoming an endangered species so if you havent tried it I wouldnt leave it too long.

Being Scottish I used to have it for my dinner at least once a week while growing up but dont like to eat it so much now since I read that they were being hunted to extinction. They are very easily caught as someone said earlier because they have 2 long legs on one side of the body and 2 shorter legs on the other side which means they can only walk in one direction around the hillsides. You only have to jump out and scare them and they will tumble down to the bottom trying to get away.

Here is a better explination which I found online.

Nowadays there are strict laws against hunting wild haggis and only farmed haggis may be used in Scotland’s seven haggis processing plants. However, the wild Haggis is said to be both more tender and more flavoursome and as a result poaching is rife. Haggis are nocturnal and very shy and disturbance by sightseers is said to have added to the stress on the few surviving herds. I was therefore very careful when photographing the above Haggis a few years ago and obeyed all the rules in the Haggis watching code.

The wild Haggis population is now thought to have fallen below 6,000 and most of these are to be found deep in the Caledonian Pine Forest where they feed mainly on fallen pine kernels and other seeds as well as the shoots of young plants. They have a particular fondness for mint which is said to add flavour to the meat.

Those who are against any form of Haggis eating allege that the slaughterhouses are inhumane (and even inhaggisane) and claim Haggis are needlessly tortured before finally dying in “these despicable mechanisms”. Once processed, Haggis are sold to butchers and supermarkets all around the world (even through the World-wide Web!) for Scots and would-be Scots to celebrate the life of the great poet, Rabbie Burns (1759-1796). Burns Suppers are now so popular that they last from November to March, thus creating even more suffering for these poor, innocent creatures.

As the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique puts it, "..., haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour." However, there are vegetarian alternatives and these come strongly recommended, especially by the Haggis themselves!
