Title: Spur of the moment day out Post by: Colchester Kev on January 26, 2010, 02:01:49 PM I have just decided that on Thursday (28th) I am going to hop on a train and sod off to London for the day ... Imperial war museum to be exact.
If anyone fancies joining me on my outing, they will be more than welcome, be warned though, I don't rush through museums :) Open invite, looking to get to London for about 10.30am Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: bolt pp on January 26, 2010, 02:05:55 PM dont think it counts as spur of the moment kev if you plan it two days in advance ::)

Firstly, the entrance to the Imperial war museum, Always impresses me, lovely building and the 2 x 15" guns outside are awesome. Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: Colchester Kev on January 29, 2010, 03:33:06 PM No trip to any military museum is complete without the obligatory drool over probably the most iconic aeroplane ever built ... the Spitfire.
Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: Colchester Kev on January 29, 2010, 03:42:31 PM Among the many poignant and moving exhibits is this headstone.
The inscription reads R V Steed Galley Boy SS Empire Morn 26th April 1943 Aged 14 years Raymond Victor Steed was just 14 years old when his ship hit a mine, he died with over 20 fellow crew members. he is the youngest recorded second world war service death. 14 years old ! .. FOURTEEN !!! ... He is laid to rest in a European cemetery in Morocco. Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: TheChipPrince on January 29, 2010, 03:45:44 PM Good start Kev, any tank ones?

Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: bobAlike on January 29, 2010, 04:20:10 PM My Dad used to take me to the IWM every year on our yearly trip to the smoke. I hadn't been for over 27 years and decided to take my lad there last year (maybe year before).
It was when they had the James Bond/Ian Fletcher exhibition. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so did my lad, the wife and daughter still hate me. :) Title: Re: Spur of the moment day out Post by: Jon MW on January 29, 2010, 06:31:08 PM I went to the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester last weekend, it's a pretty good place to spend a couple of hours although obviously not a patch on the 'proper' one
It does have a tank though (http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs218.snc3/22573_296771886042_732861042_5116606_4194977_n.jpg) |
