Title: Recession question
Post by: thetank on January 27, 2010, 10:11:31 AM
As I understand it, the definition of a recession is 3 consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.

Yesterday it was announced that the UK economy grew by +0.1% by the national office of statistics. All the news programs have been talking about the danger of slipping right back into recession in April.

My question is, given the definition of a recession, wouldn't it take till at least October for another recession?

omg more importantly look at this, proof that ghosts exist, apparantly the child crying in this pic had been crying all through the party and she never cried and they say kids can see ghosts and look inbetween the womans legs, omg!!! i think we should talk about this instead

Also i'd say the bird in the red top>>>>>>>>>>>> the blondie with the perm>>>>>>>>bird with the stripy top but it's close, can only really see the faces from that pic so it's difficult to call, anyone disagree?

yeah, that order seems about right

one thing I've always wondered about ghosts is

I mean, how do they do it without transparency, surely that's a ghostly prerequisite

Title: Re: Recession question
Post by: AndrewT on January 27, 2010, 11:22:21 AM
I'd say ghosts were more translucent than transparent.

Title: Re: Recession question
Post by: gatso on January 27, 2010, 11:29:04 AM
good point. I'd always kinda thought of transparency as a form of translucency or maybe the other way round but a quick google would indicate they're distinct and seperate states so ghosts would necessarily do stuff without transparency. I'll write to katie moffat and let her know

Sam then sets off in search of a disturbed poltergeist (Vincent Schiavelli) whom he encountered during his first day as a ghost in the subway, who is able to move and touch objects by focusing and summoning all his emotions on his intended target. Sam seeks to learn and the ghost is willing to teach, but before he can learn anymore the ghost snaps and disappears into the subway.

Quote
The scene where the "Subway Ghost" (Vincent Schiavelli) teaches Sam to move objects with his "ghost powers" was filmed in an abandoned lower platform at the 42nd Street A station in New York. The train running in that scene was the J (New York City Subway service), which is the same train that ran in Dirty Dancer Village and the hit man's neighborhood.

tank you are close but its 2 quarters of - growth so we could slip back into recession in july if growth slips again

many experts have been predicting a W recession but i think they were expecting a little more of an upswing that one quarter of 0.1% growth

as for the rest of you there are no such things as ghosts elvis told me that last night

while it would be a better name I feel it would fail in my objective to raise awareness of the many anagrams of elvis, people just won't look at it and see the jumbalaya

maybe 'viva las elvis veils' would do the trick

It is also an anagram of 'vlies' which is the German word for fleece.

I understand that most ghosts seen this time of year will be wearing a 'vlies' to stop them catching a cold.

"Elvis pie" was quite famous, it was burgers in a pie .... "Elvis Pie" is an anagram of "Evil Pies" ... All of which lead me to conclude that Matt Russell is indeed Elvis !!

Righteo

Turns out what we thought the official definition of recession was (the 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth) is just there for convienence and is not so rigid.

A recession is just any significant period of negative growth. The reason why they go for 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth before it's stamped with the label recession is to allow for a mistake in the data, a one-off event or a seasonal anamoly.

So if the April 26th figure is negative, it would be 6 quarters of negative growth followed by a quarter of negligible growth, followed by another quarter of negative growth.
It will proabably be fair enough then to state that we've slipped back into a recession. Fingers crossed for April then

It would come just around about election time too.

Gordon Brown's speech.

"With a steady hand I've steered this country out of reces... puts hand to ear excuse me a minute.
...
ahem, as I was saying, David Cameron is a tosser from Eton."
