The group of intrepid poker players includes the eponymous Stuart "StuartHopkin" Hopkin who is the lead organiser and chief bawbag.  For a complete tosser the bloke is actually a bloody good organiser, and I expect to see his usual colour-coordinated spreadsheet for this one.  He's already ordered the flights for three of us, and is looking into the best deals for hotels.  So far the group consists of four definites, but this number is expected to grow between now and then.  Accompanying Hopkin Green Frog will be myself, and the quiet and retiring Cos "Greekstein" Papertits and his infeasibly large schnozzle.  The three Vegas Virgins will be accompanied by the one and only Neil 'Blatch' Blatchly who I'm sure will be showing the ropes to the noobs.

There will be a handful of others who will be joining this motley crew, and they are degenerates one and all.

I hope no one has any expectations of this thread reaching any sort of epic status, nor will it be as great as the Shrewdies thread.

However we will keep it upto date with the progress of the planning, the expanding group, some sort of update whilst there plus my demise whilst on death row.

Any tips on where to go and what to do would be super, personally I will be playing as little poker as possible and concentrating on drinking and partying so thats where my interests lie.

Waiting for a few more to book flights but any hotel tips would be amazing!

Plus its looking like we will have an Elvis wedding to attend whilst there ;)

It is bang in tthe middle of the strip - the rooms in the south tower were all refurbed a few years ago and its cheap as chips

That said, they are giving rooms away in vegas at the mo (comparatively speaking), so could be worth going balla!

You should be able to get Venetian/bellagio/ceasers for that kind of money (with a premium of up to 225 at weekends) - you're going with blatch you will have easily spun up enough to cover the extra

Your budget is actually a little tricky, as it is way over middle of the road, but under premium.

My best advice is be in the middle of the strip, (your point of reference should be proximity to the Bellagio which is pretty much the middle

Infact (i have never stayed there) - but why not look at Planet Hollywood?

The Golden Nugget is very nice and well within your budget if you don't mind being downtown.

Middle of the strip is the advice I've been given too by plenty of people - it seems to be the only thing most agree on.

It's not like it's hard to get from one end of the strip to the other.

Close to where you're going to spend most of your time is generally good.

But I think as long as it's anywhere on the strip you're not going to have a problem in terms of location.

Mirage is central- a week in Sept is now $880 you could book this as a saver for instance then just keep trawling to find a better deal and just cancel when if you find something better,i think they only take 1 night fully refundable deposit.

Can easily get upgraded rooms
Nice having the poker room within staggering distance when you wake up
Deepstack comps on your doorstep

Just don't forget you have to average 6 hours play per day or you pay full rate. Also tourneys don't officially count but you can get round that by sneakily playing a bit of cash first and going straight to the tourney and not swiping out.

The 'Go Luxury' strip view rooms at the flamingo are very good and the rate is probably about what your looking at without worrying about clocking up poker rate hours. Great location.

More importantly they appear to have an Irish Bar with Guinness on draught, being there for 11 days this is going to be incredibly important.

Can anyone tell me how common Guinness on draught is in the Vegas of Las?

They also have a cracking piano bar in the middle of the casino that is really swinging most nights. NY NY is deffo worth a night out, but I wouldn't stay there as the rooms are expensive for what they are, you really should stay in middle strip (near Bellagio, venetian etc)

Oh...and the Piano "Bar at Times Square" does get rocking...particularly Fri/Sat Nights. Be aware though that the piano players work for tips (pay for a requested song) and it can get expensive (min $20) if you want your fav played any time soon.

Rio is off strip(maybe a mile),there is a shuttle bus to the strip but i don't know if it has wheelchair access.

It's very low down on my list, just above Circus-circus.

The rooms are actually quite nice but the hotel does nothing for me, it's a little out of the way too.

I am extremely picky about drinking Guinness outside of Ireland, However in the Nine Fine Irishmen at NYNY the barman listened to me and filled it correctly and I spent a nice 10 hours there drinking the blonde in the black dress.

Ive never understood the whole Guinness in Ireland is so much better argument. Ive drank it in Dublin/Belfast neither really stood out as much tastier than the DTD pints. You get bad pints here and there yeah but I dont think it travels as badly as people make out!

Riviera is the oldest casino on the Strip and needs renovating, badly.

Strat is so far north, some people don't even consider it part of the strip, as from what I read the Strip unofficially starts at the corner of Sahara Ave.

If you're determined to get somewhere that cheap, then location wise you're looking at Bills or IP.

How cheap? Surely a $1500 budget per room isnt that cheap?

Nothing wrong with Bill's stayed there a couple of times and the rooms are very good for the money and can be very cheap depending on dates. IP is a pit though...........

Each to their own obviously but $150 a day is a hell of a lot to pay when all you really need is something relatively clean with a bed.

I've stayed in a wide range of hotels all over vegas and unless you are going to spend a lot of time in the room, I just can't see the point.

Bills (http://www.billslasvegas.com/) will do you a decent room smack bang in the middle of the strip for $70 a day.
Ballys will do you much the same for under $100 a day.

TBH, the IP is perfectly fine for a room (not the Capri rooms though)...just don't eat or play there. :)

  My mate had his wedding reception in one of the rooms at the top of the Strat and it was very good,food was great and the view just amazing,but you couldn't smoke up the top so i had to make several trips down for a ciggie,i noticed the crowd getting more ghetto as the evening progressed.
  By midnight i had counted one Hells angels chapter and three separate Hispanic badged groups,i wouldn't go as far as saying i felt unsafe but there was an atmosphere and i wouldn't choose to stop in the hotel.Fwiw we stopped for a bit playing table games and didn't see any bother at all but there is so many better options.

Stayed in the Strat several times and never a problem day or night.

Sure the area isn't the greatest but it's still on the Strip (just), well lit and security are always around.

OK, I'm not walking down any side streets around there but the Deuce stops right outside and it's got a Dennys and an IHOP within a 2 minute walk.

It's got a bad rep (like the IP and Circus Circus) mostly from people who've never stayed there and heard horror stories third hand.

Do not stay at stratosphere or anywhere else past thw wynn heading that way down the strip

The downtown area is a shit hole too, ignore people saying the nugget etc

The Strat is not downtown, it's halfway between the Strip (proper) and downtown.

The Nugget is a lovely hotel (stayed in November) and they just opened a new wing. The best of downtown.

Now, I will grant you that Fremont Street isn't the Strip but it's not as bad as others make out.

If I ever get the chance to go to Vegas again I'll probably stay downtown for a change, but for a first trip, it's got to be mid-strip imo

Absolutley, 1st time trip it has to be mid-Strip. There you are basically in the hands of Harrahs or MGM (with the exception of TI).

Harrahs Group has the best comps program but also has a $1 higher rake than the MGM.

Downtown is OK for a few days only...after 4 night it's very samey.

Some things to consider that haven't been mentioned before:

1. There is a 13% room tax which often isn't obvious up front when being quoted a nightly rate.
2. Many properties also have a compulsory Resort fee (often $15 per day). You might get internet included in that case but it's best to check.

Ok so the coming months before Vegas are just a whole world of life grinding for me. I'll be grinding at work, at the [ ] gym and at pokers. I'll be doing pretty much f.all else.

Last night I played $1k worth of comps for Trigg and after about $600 worth of cashes (Trigg was there to watch me get screwed in both) I regged in some more comps but ultimately to no avail. Shame because I initially had stacks (140k in the 33k and 35k in the 150k) and was playing real good but just ran like I do. A big score could have done nicely. I did feel like a prick for dicking it off in the mulligan a little light.

Tonight I go to what I deem the best place for cash games in the whole of the country (in terms of how soft the games are) and I lose £1200. This means my Blatch makeup is now £1336 when only a few days ago it was £126 and I was gonna start chopping teh profitz again. I'll spare the beats.

[ ] Online has been going well for me too. I've been thinking about it though and it's because I'm completely out of routine. I need to be off full tilt, on a site where I have a nice rb deal (hurry up blonde and dtd) and consistently putting in sessions, 6-9 tabling and updating after each one. I'm gonna take a week or so away from online stuff as it's stressing me out - play some more live to clear makeup and get back into the swing of things.

I doubt the other guys will be updating the Vegas thread in the same way I will but it's a different grind for me (I'm not multai or a dinosaur or a combo of both) to get there than it is for them. I'm gonna enjoy doing it too.

As for hotels, I've stayed at Planet Hollywood before and it was perfect for a central location.  Lovely hotel, rooms are adequate, not huge but hey you don't need an apartment and the club/bars are good and lively there.  I'd easily stay there again.

Thats the rough budget, it doesnt all need to be spent, obv left overs will be spent on beer at the airport.
In the same vein though Im not one for saving $20 if that $20 gets you somewhere twice as nice.

I actually quite liked the look of Bally's but I havent had a look at Bill's.

Its my first time so everyones views are welcome, I stay in a fair few hotels but obviously not ones that normally contain 48 restaurants, a theatre, a casino, a bookies and a choice of 9 bars! Personally I love hotels and so hopefully I would like to find one that is a comfortable base to start every days adventures from with a decent bar/club etc for when all those saddo's decide to play the pokerz.

I just had 5 days in vegas.. Stayed at the Bellagio - rooms were lovely and buffet was awesome but not my fav Casino... and prob wouldn't be in a hurry to go back

Next time I go I'd stay at either the Venetian or the Palazzo... Probs the Palazzo getting the nod! Cant say I've seen the rooms but enjoyed  these two the most and location is v central... I've stayed at the Wynn previously and was v nice, but a little bit out the way and a little bit quieter than some of the others

Palazzo sports book is the nutz... worth a trip if you not staying there, book seats/booth in advance if there is a big game on

if it's in your budget then I reckon Caesar's Palace would be a great base

The tax on hotels is pretty standard across the US, it varies state by state. You also get resort fees on certain places, I think Vegas might be one of those place.

Re. Bally's Stu, it's not what it appears to be in the brochures altough the location is excellent.

Red and I moved out after a day or so; the decor is tiring, the air-con didn't work and the beds were lumpy.

Ballys is OK - one of teh towers (south iirc) has been fully refurbed in teh last 3 years or so - get in them if yo ugo to ballys.

Tom and I had one of the "refurbished" rooms in the South tower and we both were totally underwhelmed.

The Golden Nugget's cheaper rooms were three times as nice and half the price, that was in October 2008.

I went last October and stayed at the MGM. Got a small suite for £360 for 6 nights off Lastminute.com about 4 weeks before going. Would have had a normal room but the suite was only £50 more. Deals to be had around that far in advance from what I saw last year. Went down from £550 suddenly.

Really nice room, amazing casino, reasonable bars, main downside was being slightly out the way if you want to go up to the Venetian poker room or other mid-strip places, but plenty of other places round there, NY NY across the bridge, Hooters over the road (buckets of wings FTW!). Poker room at MGM was pretty decent for cash games, tourneys were total crapshoots. Do the midday at Venetian - 10000 chips for $150 and even in a quiet midweek day it was seeing over 100 runners. I managed to donk out in 30 mins on my first attempt, but such is life :). Made a bit back playing 2/4 limit in the MGM, sitting next to a very pissed bloke, at 2pm :).

No resort fees in the main MGM hotel either, although it was $15/day for internet access if you wanted it. A couple of friends stayed in the Signature there; amazing room but fairly pricey, with a resort fee on top. Fairly long walk to the main casino too.

I'd love to go back soon, but getting another pass from the wife is redic unlikely. I need another friend to get married as an excuse again :). I'd probably try mid-strip, Venetian/Palazzo if I could get a deal, Mirage, Bellagio, Paris maybe - looks impressive, from the outside at least.

I've stayed at the Luxor - I'd give it a miss. Rooms weren't really good value for money compared to other places I've stayed, and location isn't great.

You're correct, that is where we stayed the North tower not the South, and we tipped the concierge $20 to get a decent room.

Stayed at the Luxor on our first visit, place was ok but the location was just too far out of the way. Second time round we stayed at Planet Hollywood, much better room, spot on location and price good too, infact I couldn't fault it and would stay there again.

Heard pleny of stories about if you gamble a lot in the hotel your staying, when you come to check out your bill is greatly reduced.

Is this true? How much are we talking?

Reason I ask is there appears to be some good deals on booking.com, do I miss out on this compping if I dont book with the hotel direct? Is it worth worrying about?

Sign up for a players club card for wherever you stay. MGM is good for all Harrahs I think. I got one for Venetian as well. Tip there - the queue for getting a card can be huge, but if you're playing poker there is a little players club desk near the poker floor that had no queue at all, if you ask for it.

In the MGM you couldn't get rated (points) at blackjack unless you were playing $25 minimum, presume same most places. For cash poker you give them your card when you sit down and it gives you points based on time at the table and the stakes.

You'll probably find you need to spend more than you think to get anything useful. I ended up with over $20000 wagering value of points on my MGM card (and a stupid amount of that was slots and video poker), and I might have been able to get a buffet for that, if I'd bothered, which I didn't.

On the basis of 2 hours drunk blackjack at $100 per hand I got my following stay at the Flamingo 6 months later at a minimal rate, probably about 75% off normal rate. Not 100% sure how you arrange this in advance, I think speak you need to speak to the casino host and they will agree a minimum stake and numbers of hours play per day, and they will comp your room etc.

Just make sure all your play gets tracked with the loyalty cards.

Looks like best plan is to book at the best price wherever, get a players card and then charge all meals and drinks to our rooms then see what we can get comped off when leaving.

If you don't book through the casino's website (i.e. through a 3rd party such as Expedia, Hotels, Booking) then you've already laid out the cash and there's nothing any casino host can do to reduce your room costs.

Plus, you'll nearly always get a better (or equal) rate via the casino website, you just have to know the marketing code. With that much time to go, it's worth finding a back-up rate you are happy with at the casino site and booking it. As someone said, make sure it's cancellable.

Then search other places for cheaper deals...

General Comps. Make sure you have the relevant Players Card and ensure that they track your play. $25 a hand at BJ is the usual minimum but for other table games the rates might be lower. Regardless, just give them your card to track whatever.

A general rule of thumb is they calculate your comps based on 40% of your average bet per hour. So...bet $100 a hand for an hour and they'll knock of $40. That's what I was told but the % might vary from place to place.

Poker comps. You'll get between $1 and $2 an hour and Harrahs (Total Rewards) will also give you 'Tier Points' which can be used for future comps calculations.

Pre-Comps. Unless you GUARANTEE to play a certain amount you won't get comped in advance. Comps have been withdrawn before from players who didn't meet their guarantee. Even then, you'd probably have to be a known quantity beforehand.

Once they have tracked your play, BEFORE YOU CHECK OUT, go to the Casino Host desk and ask them to review your play and see 'if there is anything they can do for you'. If you wait until they have checked you out they'll have charged your card and it'll be too late.

Even if you can't get a night or two (or more) comped they can often knock of other items. For this reason, it's always a good idea when eating in your chosen casino to charge as much as possible to the room. Obviously, this won't work where you aren't staying. :)

PH is a great looking casino so Im hoping for big things. Its prob the best of the mid-range hotels and a great location. Really hoping the rooms live up to the rest of the Hotel.

Actually, for your purposes, Iron, it's much better to stay centre-strip or MGM corner (or at least on the main monorail)

For the price of a cab, MGM has the main monorail which connects you to centre-strip. Cross the road from the MGM by walkway to NYNY and from there Excalibur and onto Luxor/Mandalay Bay by the other monorail.

Harrahs/Flamingo/IP/Bills are all contiguous and opposite Mirage/TI/Caesars (Harrahs/IP are on the monorail).

Even after the monorail shuts down (and it does) you have the back-up option of a cab.

Believe me, I've stayed in the Strat and whilst the rooms are OK, you are trapped with that area with very little to do.

Have been to Vegas 5 times and stayed in pretty crappy places due to budget constraints. Going this year and planning on Caesars but would say that Planet Hollywood is a great choice also.

Iron - Don't stay at Strat. It's in a rough area and getting around in Vegas takes longer than you might think. Taxi q's, traffic jams etc.

Not even close. Firstly it's on the western side of the strip and the monorail is on the other side.

The Sahara is, as someone said, is the closest you will get but it's a decent trek not only to the Sahara but then through the casino to the monorail station.

As I've mentioned, the Strat is OK for what it is but there are a lot of factors that weigh against it for location & access to other casinos/attractions.

Basically, if you are mobile (car or willing to travel by bus) then it's a nice option price-wise. If you have to add on cabs (or even the monorail which ain't cheap any more) then other locations make more sense.

I think it's now $7 all day..still cheaper than the monorail.

It's fine for actually getting there but there are issue...it takes AGES to get up the strip. An hour isn't unusual from Strat to MGM.

It's certainly NOT more frequent than taxis...how could it be..but chop a cab 2/3 ways and they are defo cheaper.

Oh...and even when one does come along (every 10 minutes or so), it's usually full.

Finally, late at night...it's a real adventure...picture a Night Bus from Central London and you have the picture.

PHo now a Harrah's property

News today that as of today, Harrah's will have 100% ownership of Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. Harrah's will also own the right to the Planet Hollywood name for other hotel/casino ventures.

Harrah's has controlled the hotel operations since January. The full ownership, including all hotel, casino, and food/beverage operations will go into effect at noon today.

Harrah's will be spending $8 million to upgrade the computer systems and integrate their own computer systems on the PH property. The current proprietary "A List" players card will be going away and replaced with the well known Harrah's Total Rewards system.

I was reading on a mates blog that there is a daily deepstack at the Venetian which attracts a lot of runners.

Apparently its a $340 buy in with 12,000 chips and 45 minute clock. Seems pretty perfect.

Does anyone know if this is all year round or is it just during the WSOP?

when i last went it was a daily 150 with a weekend 340 starting at midday. There was then a daily 120 in the evening with a faster format

Not sure if I mentioned to you Stu, but I changed my wsop flights to the trip we're going on. Only problem is, they are with BA. :( Good news is they are first class. :)

My flight leaves from Heathrow (and is also 2 days earlier), so I don't need to crash at Greekys/hotel.

I'm going to stay at Venetian/Wynn/Bellagio for 2 nights, then move over to Planet Bollywood when you guys come over.

February, April, June & November. NOT September Constantine.

If you're all going with Virgin there is a Hilton actually connected to the South terminal @ Gatwick by a covered walkway.

It's a bit more expensive than the other hotels, nice and cushy strolling out into the terminal in the morning as opposed to shuttling it up from one of the others.

Best cardrooms for that type of tourney are Ceasars and the Venetian.

You wont get very good stuctures in vegas unless they have a festival/series on and all the cardrooms rake you to fck and rip tips out of your hands.

Ceasars have a nightly $170 which I have won (blatant brag) which has a semi decent structure, great cardroom and the pussycat dolls are just next door.

Venetian have a $330 tourney which has a decent structure but it wasn't on when I went in feb but I believe it is back on now.

Not been to the new Aria yet (dunno why just cba crossing the street last time) and I've been told that has some good structured tournies

Yeah Amatay's a legend. We need a token pikey on the trip and he fills that gap. Plus now that Bumder (Bam) is dropping out (you sure are bud) we need a mature older member of the group, which again, Amatay fulfills.

yeah you just need to fill out some forms and hang around for a bit longer at the airport. But if you don't then they are quite happy to confiscate it i believe.

That's a step too far, chances are you won't even get stopped. But only declare if individually you take over 10k, maybe keep the withdrawal reciept. I normally take about 5k plus 4/5 cards in case I go busto. Even maestro worked in some atms last time I went.

You can.  Just need to know your pin code and daily cash withdrawal limit.  Limits vary by card.

Just take $50 and spin it up ffs  ::)

I have 2 visa, 2 MC and 1 Maestro all of which I have a £500 limit per day on. The CC's all work pretty much worldwide with that limit, the rate is fair too, just don't take out small amounts as you get the standard couple of bucks withdrawal fee.

Getting cash on credit cards is like burning money. 

Still better than being stuck in Vegas without a pot to piss in.

Changing too much money and having to change it back is worse unless you are getting it at spot from another player.

Also having too much cash on hand to do on a moment of weakness is massive -ev in Vegas. No matter how much of a nit you are, that moment of weakness will happen at some point. Trust me.................
