Title: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: thetank on February 08, 2010, 07:26:50 PM Bookies are the most depressing and dull places imaginable. How on earth do people get hooked on gambling in this country?
I have this romantic idea that a bookies somewhere will be full of energetic punters screaming at the TV screens and waving their tickets in the air, deriding the horses and dogs and jockeys, tearing their slips into little pieces and throwing them in the air when they lose, dancing for joy and kissing strangers when they win. So occasionaly when I have an hour or so to kill and I'll go into a bookie on the off chance that this bookies shop will be the bookies shop that exists in my head. It never is. It's always nearly empty, 2 or 3 old men shuffling about and tutting, the odd scruffy waster with their heads down lest they one day accidentally make eye contact, and the obligatory autistic asian fella pluggin notes into the roulette thing. I can't get down and jiggy with this. Is it like this all over the country? Does my romantic notion of a bookies exist anywhere outside of works of fiction? Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: KarmaDope on February 08, 2010, 07:29:34 PM Vegas maybe in the sportsbook? You MIGHT get it on days like National and Gold Cup in the UK.
Apart from that, I think you're dreaming a bit too much there. Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: Snowball on February 08, 2010, 07:36:20 PM Vegas maybe in the sportsbook? Tell me more, always wanted to goto Vegas and Sports Betting is my scene rather than Roulette/puggy's etc.Can you bet on all Sports over there? Is their many markets, good odds?Agree with the original poster, you only ever get a good atmosphere in bookies that are next to Pubs maybe on the odd Saturday.Lucky if I'm in them more than 10 times a year as the % is a joke on most books. Haven't a clue, never been. Best to ask that question in one of the Vegas threads on The Rail or The Lounge. Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? I think there are only 2 race days a week but when its on its crazy. the queue is redic even tho there is like 12 counters to put your bet on. outside there is people all smoking reading the papers with there mini radios because they cant watch it in the bookies coz its soooo full. horse racing in sha tin is pretty good Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: Colchester Kev on February 08, 2010, 08:19:23 PM Tank, you would have loved Corals at Turf Moor ... it was exactly how you imagined a great bookies was... so many characters, so many degens, it was like a social club.
Carpet fitters that used to gamble their fitting money before they did the job, A domestic appliance repair man who had a never ending supply of foreigners lined up to feed his punting, A couple of students who used to bet in pennies and get regular bollockings for cheering their 30p win when the lads were on a real punt on another horse ... And it is where I first met Burnley John :D Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: action man on February 08, 2010, 08:38:51 PM go to the cheltenham festial m8, highlight of my year
Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: Longy on February 08, 2010, 08:39:04 PM Cos being a degen and constantly doing your dole money on the dogs/horses doesn't tend to make people particular enthusiastic about life.
Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: Scottish Dave on February 08, 2010, 08:44:37 PM go to the cheltenham festial m8, highlight of my year we have actually talked about this, cost too much tho, when you consider the travel/hotel/gambling/drink costs! One of the other guys (Teacake's mate) went with his work on a freebie, and said that if it wasn't a freebie he would have needed about £2,000 for the week to truely be comfortable. Is this close to the truth? Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Personally i just feed off the all the ppl in there. Theres nothing better than when the favourite falls at the last and they all start ripping their tickets up and throwing them in the general direction of the bin. or when the favourite pulls up and they start musing about how McCoy or Walsh gave the horse a "shocking ride". I always spite back outsiders so when they come in no one else in the bookies is on and everyone else is devastated while i have my hand in the air. Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Someone should organise a blonde Cheltenham trip for next year and put money in every month with a trusted escrow, would be immense. Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: action man on February 09, 2010, 10:04:47 AM cheltenham costs, we'll this year were going on the wednesday and thursday, done gold cup day 3 times and its way to hectic.
So mate driving, £20 petrol, renting a house for 5 of us, £100 each for 2 nights. Tickets, £40 each so £80, will be taking like £300 for expences (with a view to nip) and my gambling money so £20+£100+£300+X its so good at cheltenham, at night all the irish drinking songs ar on live in pubs and the atmosphere is immence. Title: Re: Why are bookies so goddam dull? Post by: pleno1 on February 09, 2010, 11:10:22 AM On another forum last year, eveeryone put x amount of £ in, chose a horse and a runner up from each race, [points added up, winner takes all. Interested? £/$50, two picks for each race, first place 10 points second place 7 points, winner takes all?

Obviously the jury definietly thought so to when they all gone sent down with the lad behind the counter for between 1 and 3 years each, 100s of 1000s involved. true story. |
