Title: Sky, sigh...
Post by: kinboshi on February 10, 2010, 11:51:41 AM
I'm moving house soon, and want to move my Sky services (TV, phone and broadband) to the new address.

Now I would have thought this would be relatively simple.  But no.

I need continuity with my broadband, so wanted to be able to give them a date for it to be cancelled at my existing address and a date for it to be activated at my new place.  Ideally these dates would be close together.  With the TV it can be the same day, but that's a lot simpler in terms of them delivering the service.  So I was expecting a few days or maybe a week.  But no, it's going to take 15 days from when the phone line is activated, and they can't guarantee when that will be done!  I found all this out after being put through to 3 different 'moving' people, some who then told me they don't deal with phone customers, a second one who said I was the wrong sort of phone customer for him to deal with, and the third who said I needed to deal with the previous phone person and that he'd put me through, before putting me on hold for 10 minutes and then cutting me off.

So I have a question for anyone who's just moved house.  How long has it taken to get broadband installed if there's already an existing phone-line there?  I know that moving phone providers will delay any installation of broadband, but if it's a BT line, and I go with them for my phone and broadband - what sort of time will that take?

I just moved and went with virgin simply because the fibre optic cable doesnt need a phone line and your good to go pretty much straight away! Ive only got the broadband with virgin (£15 pm), maybe thats something you can look at if you need broadband.

If you replied on msn I would have told you there but meh......

TV worked instantly as they told me not to tell them I was moving as their was already a dish at the property.
Sky broadband? Wtf? Why wouldnt you have Virgin?

My Virgin broadband was activated when i ordered it.

Don't have Virgin as the current house isn't in a cable area (despite Virgin telling me it was at first).

I'm hoping the new place is in a Virgin area, and if so will go with the Virgin broadband option again (as I was for 6 years before I moved).

Pretty sure Mapperly has been done.

My existing house is in a street where half the houses have cable, and the other half don't.  Not quite sure what goes through their minds when they're laying the cable to houses...

So you were with Orange, and moved to the new place and stuck with Orange?  Sky doesn't say up to 15 days though, it says typically 15 days.  It was actually longer when I signed up with them originally...

Dan this is the most solvable problem you'll ever have.

Just move house and transfer your TV and broadband and wait patiently for 15 days for the broadband to activate.

In the meantime sign up for a virgin mobile dongle. You should do this about 5 days before you move to make sure it arrives in time.

When your broadband comes back in to service ring virgin mobile and say that you don't want the dongle anymore. Thanks to their beautiful 30 day no questions money back guarantee they'll take it back and won't charge you a oenny.

You're welcome.

That is elegant and beautiful, just like your good self.

I have the option also of using my phone as a dongle, and that's not bad as a backup solution.  Not great though when I need the connection for work stuff and need to rely on it.  Going to look at the dongle option now to see what the download speeds are with the Virgin dongle.

Advertised download speeds for mobile dongles are the greatest fiction known to man.

O2 took about 5 days to change and told me it would take about 2 weeks. Once i had new phone number i told them same day, and it starts from there...

Other option is to cancel at your current address 3-4 days before u go, will make it quicker on the other side and 5 days of transfer includes taking broadband of the line you are currently on.

I have Sky broadband, when we moved they told us the same 15 days, but it actually took 3 despite there being no phone line at all when we moved in.

That's promising then.

Just had a lot of problems when I had it installed initially - so was preparing for the worst.

Sorry for the hijack, but, we are moving next month too.

We have everything from sky the tv phone line broadband etc.

I know the tv side is straight forward, but how do we go about getting the phone line switched to sky at the new house and the broadband activated?

Do they need to know the existing phone number at the new house first?

Bit off topic, but Sky Sports tried to interview David James a few years ago and he declined.

When asked why, he said his sky box hadn't been working for three weeks and despite numerous calls noone had come to fix it. He wasn't going to be interviewed until they fixed it.

It was fixed the next day...

Yep, I think so.  This is the logistical issue - and like you said, the TV changeover is the simple and it's the phone line getting activated that's the issue and only then can they process the broadband for activation.

Unless you're David James on strike.
