Title: Any one with Virgin media?
Post by: pokefast on February 13, 2010, 04:32:05 PM
Hi guys.

Can any of you recommend Virgin media?

Basically we have everything with Sky at the moment, tv, phone line and broadband.

However at the new house there is currently no BT line ( which they want £105 to set up!! )

So i'm thinking of getting the following from Virgin ( because the line at the new house is occupied from virgin )

Tv in the living room, our bedroom and daughters bedroom.

Phone line.

Broadband

Is this firstly feasible and secondly wise?

Virgin is the nuts IMO, I had sky at my old house and I prefer Virgin, the only thing I miss is Sky Sports HD.

Best thing about the TV is the on demand service, it's like Sky Anytime, only it has programmes you actually want to watch, and probs 300 times more content. Basically everything from the main channels from the previous week, and a bunch more on top.

I have 50mb broadband which is so awesome after being stuck on 0.5mb for the last 2 years. Very reliable so far...

Have an extra TV box in the bedroom, am sure you could get two if u wanted...

what would i be looking at cost wise for 20mb broadband phone line and tv with sky sports in 3 rooms?

It costs me about £90 per month for 20 mb broadband, all the channels in 2 rooms (sport and kids), telephone (unlimited uk local and national calls)

Daft question, but i'mm assuming with 3 boxes in the house that they all work like sky ie you don't have to watch what someone else is watching?

i hate virgin and cant wait to get back to sky.  i think its more expensive and the box is always (i say always i mean about once a week, but it still pisses me off) playing up, having to reset it when it freezes etc.  The broadband is v.good but thats not enough imo as the sky broadband was pretty good too.

I've had both and hate Virgin. The sky box is way better and more user friendly than the Virgin one, can't wait to get back to Sky...............

Definately works like that with 2 boxes. Would assume 3 would be just the same.

I've had no problems with Virgin in the 3 years I've used them. I would recommend the service to anyone.

To you guys that think Virgin is OK have you had sky before? If so I'll shut my mouth, but I feel the Sky box is so much better its worth having over Virgin.

I was with Sky for 15 years or so before. I'm not knocking Sky I've just had no problems with Virgin since I've moved.

I've had both, infact we currently got both Sky and Virgin Media in our living room atm. For TV, I just prefer Sky. Can't really pinpoint any major reasons why, just general feel and how reliable the Sky box is. Having said this, we have a Virgin broadband connection, and that is really good! Had a problem a while back when my connection wasn't updated automatically, but had an engineer come out the next day after I informed them, and sort it all out. Brilliant!

Is there any difference in price? Also, because Virgin Media broadband doesn't need a phone line (I don't think so anyway), I'd perhaps consider them for broadband and Sky for TV.

You don't have to take the phone line for broadband but they charge you more for your broadband if you don't take it.

I've had both and tbh there's not too much to choose between the 2.

I'm on Virgin atm but switching back to sky soon because you get babestation on there.

lol Matt, quality answer :D

I have Virgin broadband and it's excellent, hardly ever have a problem with it.  Not keen on their tv though, the lack of HD channels is a problem.  Didn't bother with them for the phone either.

Woodsey, agree Sky box is kinda easier to work, but like I said On Demand on Virgin is far superior to what Sky offers, and the only sucky thing w/ Virgin is no Sky Sports HD (and babestation/similar channels obv agree with that)

Title: Re: Any one with Virgin media?
Post by: pokefast on February 14, 2010, 09:22:41 AM
The HD aspect is not a bother for me as we don't have an HD tv anyway.

Another reason i'm thinking of going with Virgin, is the difficulty having all 3 boxes attached to a phone line would cause with sky.

I've been informed that i'd have to get 2 new phone points installed, and this ( and the £105 charge for BT line and the £60 installation ) fee is somewhat tilting me towards Virgin

Virgin TV sucks. The picture sucks. The menu sucks. The remote sucks. Its the suckiest pile of suck ever.

Sky TV is probably the best thing in the world.

Sky TV with Virgin Phone and Broadband is the only way forward.

I only have internet with Virgin and can say its very good service and the only time ive had a problem in 2 years they came out on a bank holiday to fix it. However i agree that i think Sky tv is better, depends what your main use is going to be

Decided to go with Virgin and bin Sky.

Basically after finding out that Sky will install free a new phone line for new customers, I rang them to see what my 8 years loyalty would get me and basically it will get me a charge of £105 for phone line and a charge of £60 for a home move! no loyalty discount no nothing.

I think i must of spoken to everyone at Sky apart from Rupert Murdoch but they wouldn't budge so Virgin it is.

Bonus is i'm getting more than i have now, V+ box, 2 multirooms, broadband and phone, for £26p/m less than the Sky equivelent would cost me.

I signed up for Virgin when Setanta was free with TV XL.  Perfect for ICC20/20.  Ofc straight after Setanta go tits up - that's how we roll.  ESPN not a bad alternative as I love watching baseball, if cricket isn't well covered this summer will just have to bolt on SkySports.

But I'm certainly not moving anywhere, the broadband has been excellent.

Don't have an HD ready telly at the moment, so not an issue.

There maybe a few withdrawal symptoms with babestation though.

And no more Tikay on a Saturday night either but hey ho everyone needs to make a sacrifice at some time in their lives!

Im not 100% sure.

Admitedly Im not a TV geek like some people but my parents and a friend have Virgin on pretty good TV's, I just find the picture is not as sharp.

I have an AV nerd friend also and he would not touch Virgin for his TV with a barge pole.

There's nothing wrong with it at all. Hopkin's just got it stuck in his head and won't ever budge cus he's stubborn like that.

I've got Sky and Virgin and can assure you they look the same when viewed through the same TV and interconnects.

I didn't like the Virgin menu when I first got it but I actually prefer it now. It's not as clear but that's because you get to keep viewing whatever you were watching in the corner of the screen. There's more room on the screen for the Sky menu but you can't keep viewing while you flick through the other channels.

Some good points, some bad.

A toasty day it was and I would never ever go back to Virgin.

I didn't like the Virgin menu when I first got it but I actually prefer it now. It's not as clear but that's because you get to keep viewing whatever you were watching in the corner of the screen. There's more room on the screen for the Sky menu but you can't keep viewing while you flick through the other channels.

Yeah you can.

Sweet.

Is that on the new HD box? Mine's only a Sky+ but I'm getting Sky HD soon. This was the only thing I didn't like about it.

Yes. The new HD box menu actually feels like it was created in the 21th century. Does series stacking as well, which is a nice feature. 7 day searching too, which is handy sometimes. And you'll get Anytime, which you may not have had depending on the age of your Sky+ box (my v.old one doesn't have it).

Sky tv>virgin tv

Vigin broadband>sky broadband

Overall

Sky>virgin

I've had both and I'm moving back to sky. Can't wait. Virgin tv is terrible, menu is awful, always having to reset the box and the picture is shite.

Oh, definitely. Virgin = phone/broadband, Sky = TV.

Virgin, where 20Mb means 20Mb:

And that is for the same money I used to pay BT for 2.5Mb.

Was just having a little sleepy mate before getting on it.

Btw. 5 pints + huge curry is not a good plan the night before getting on a plane.

Has Sky before but now have Virgin. Have had no problems with it. On demand is great, broadband is super fast and as for the lack of Babestation, it doesn't matter, cos I've got a Freeview box as well.

Had my virgin installed last Friday and couldn't be happier with it especially the tv. Because i haven't got an HD telly the picture quality is exactly the same as my old sky plus.

Dicky Branson i love you.

Just wait till you gave been using it a while, the picture is good most of the time but goes through phases of being mediocre and you have to keep resetting the box. Also, no way the box is anywhere near as user friendly as the sky one.

No agree that the remote is not as user friendly but its not as bad.

As for the box itself i think its better than the sky plus box i had and at least its silent.

Plus Virgin customer service seems alot better than skys. I've spoken to them on 3 occasions now on unrelated matters and not once have i been put through to an Indian guy called Kevin who i cannot understand.
