Title: My First Car (inspired by Tikay)
Post by: outragous76 on February 17, 2010, 12:00:28 PM
I thought I would start this thread as I am sure that there will be some beauties

The great thing about first cars, is that they are usually terrible, but held in such high esteem by their owners.

Your first freedom, first nearmiss, for some their first crash and a sorry ending (for the car).

So here is mine (i don't have digital photos of it, so had to download an image)

Citroen Visa 1.7D

Oh yes, the much sough after diesel engine. Quite pokey at the top end with plenty or torque for motorway driving. I seem to remember it didn't go too well at the low end (no turbo), infact it drove like a van < 30mph.

The main highlight of the car was its suspension. It felt like something of a design after thought. The first 2 seconds of making a turn where taken up in the lolling of the suspension before any other type of movement took place. Preempting corners was a must. Something of a ride i can assure you.

However  - I <3 my Visa

600cc Citreon 2CV for me bought it for £100 in 1995 and sold it to a collector for £300 in 1998 lol.

Possibly the craziest cars in the world with the dashboard gear stick, seats that could all slide out completely, flapping windows that wouldnt lock, and a bonnet that had a tendancy to unlock itself mid journey and wrap itself around the windscreen.

All in a all a classic car.

from wikipedia

Quote
In 1996, Jeremy Clarkson (of Top Gear fame) declared the Nissan Sunny to be the "worst car in the world, ever" and destroyed one by flinging it from a trebuchet pulled by a tractor. In 2003, on Top Gear, presenter Richard Hammond also proclaimed the Sunny to be the worst car ever, and had a Sunny incinerated by the exhaust fumes of a rocket car. Their main motivation being the mediocre design and driving experience of the Sunny making it a car of "no character".

and tbh they were probably right. but it was a car and that was better than no car and infinitely better than one of my sisters who was driving a lada riva at the time

it got me to school, it got me to the pub and it managed to spin dramatically out of control across a busy road and nearly kill 3 of my best mates. somehow we all walked away from the spin without a scratch and have a great story that we still talk about today

while it may have given me freedom I wasn't sad to switch it for a mkII fiesta, the greatest car ever

What a peice of junk my vauxhall nova saloon was. The day after i bought it for £150 not including tax disc it blew all the spark plugs out of their sockets somehow (scared the sh1t out of me, seriously loud bangs), it never saw the road again, i got a refund out of the garage bloke but forgot the tax disc so it cost me £50 for about an hours driving.

(not a picture of my actual nova)

Fiat 127, used to break down every week, usually seriously, rust everywhere including the roof that I filled in with bubblegum. wide wheels, bucket seats, sporty backbox and expensive stereo stuck into the dash with tape cos the hole was too big for it ???

Mine was a Daihatsu Mira.  All 550cc of it.  Felt as though it was made from tin, and it struggled with four people in the car.  Was cheap though and seemed to do thousands of miles on a single tank, but maybe it just felt like that.

Here's a cracking video of one (a little older than the one I had though, but just as beautiful):

This was mine. Not the exact car but same year. Mine didn't have the extra funky headlights but was the same attractive colour. For the youngsters it's an Austin Maxi. Groundbreaking in it's day. Mostly however just broken.

I had a Maxi for my second car, fantastic passion wagon lol seats folded down into a double bed ......... ah the memories.

Unfortunately my first car was a Talbot Samba and it took a while to get any street cred back.

I didn't have a car until I had been driving for years, but my first motor was an ex gas boad single wheel Transit van. one of the really early ones (1968) It had had more hits than the beatles, you couldn't find a panel without half a dozen dents, but it had a 2ltr V4 engine and it went like shit of a shovel.

My bro Tracy and I bought a Morris 1000 van (ex GPO) as a passion waggon. Who ever pulled first got to use the van. we brush painted it bright yellow. The head gasket was gone and the coolant used to leak through into the exaust ports. at top speed (about 50mph) the cylinder head used to get so hot you could see it glowing in the dark, it used to melt the plug leads. One of the sides had rotted away from the sill at the bottom and used to flap up and down as we drove along. It looked like a giant wounded canary.

Transit twin wheel diesel, f reg. Clutch went, fitted new one. Next day, clutch went again. Fitted new one, and so on. After about 6 clutches, I found out that the input shaft was bent, so I replaced the clutch one last time and towed it to Leeds commercial vehicle auction where a milkman bought it. As he drove it away, the clutch went...

Bedford TK 7.5 tonne 16ft dropside. 330 full flow engine, 5 speed overdive box.

Bedford TK 6.5 tonne 14ft dropside tipper, 220 "Coffee Grinder" engine, 4 speed box. reg WNN337G.  No governors on engine, speed gradually increased intill you came to a hill, best effort, 92 mph with following wind on A1 nr Scotch Corner.

Transit twin wheel truck, V4 petrol. Ex hire firm, had more hits than the Beatles. Hated it. Engine stuck a leg out of bed as we topped Hagg hill in Sheffield. Pistons, liners, con rods etc all fell into sump. Fitted Re-con engine but forgot to fit oil gauge sender, spewed oil out and ruined replacement engine in process.

During this time I had a Mini 950 to which I fitted a 1300 engine and box. It did about 7mpg and would pass anything except a garage.

I also had an Escort van called WUG. It had so much back pressure that the cab used to fill with smoke. I drilled a hole in the oil filler cap, inserted a pipe and fed it through the bulkhead and out beneath the drivers door. It worked great until a policeman stopped me and came to my window for a chat. The fumes almost gassed him. He told me to feck off so I revved her up and left him looking like a black and white minstrel.

That takes us from about 1974 to 1976.

I had one of these too as my first car, didn't break down much though and I used it loads.  Used to go to gigs all across the country when I was younger, and the fiat took us everywhere.   We even used to sleep in her, not very comfortable, but it did the job.

my second car, i did about 60,000 miles in it over 3 years and it never broke down, parked it up one night in town and some twats put the rear and front windscreens through which made it a write off. Loved that car.

My local garage gave these out as couresy cars as they were so reliable.

This was a little blue "F" reg one.  We had it in the family from new and was incredible.  Broke down for first time after 80,000 and never had any problems with it really.

When I first started driving it cost me £12 to fill from empty to full (Obv most of the forum can beat this but still very little to nowadays)

I had a white one of these, inherited from mum when I passed my test in '85.

It was awful but it was transport.

I ended up putting it through a hedge whilst driving like a Pr**k. But that's another story.

My first car was a clapped out old mini that my grandad gave me. I never got to drive it, but it did cause me a lot of trouble. That's a long story, and not one for the forum, but sadly I have nothing but bad memories from that car that never even left my garage :(

The first car I owned that I actually got to drive was several years later when I was 21 - another old banger - austin maestro I think.  A few months later I bought my first (and only) brand new car, a lovely metallic green VW Polo.

i never passed my test until 95, and went out to buy a golf the same day. except the equivalent golf was about 600 quid dearer than the jetta (F reg) . i couldnt really see the point in that so i took the jetta, and loved it. it had a 1.6 litre engine, and i put a pioneer stereo in it. i drove 20K miles in 11 months in it and never even had to put air in the tyres. as i was moving to holland, i sold it to my cousin for 100quid less than i had paid for it. not bad depreciation at 0.5p per mile.

when i moved to holland i got a company car of a 2 litre nissan primera. This thing was seriously quick, but i had an argument in the works car park with the back wall, and that was the end of that.

For my punishment i got a 2.0 T spark Alfa romeo 155. this thing was awesome, and was great fun to drive. i nearly turned down moving to my next job because i wanted to keep the car !

more to come....

1998 saw the end of my company car days, a combination of a shit blue mondeo, the punishing company car tax and the fact that i started working for myself.

my very own company car would be a 1994 rover 820 fastback. i thought it was the business. it nearly put me out of business. my very first weekend of owning it i drove to scotland, and was told around lockerbie by a helpful aa man that the gearbox seals were knackered, and spraying oil everywhere. i wondered where all the smoke was coming from.

i hated the car from the moment i bought it, and had no confidence in it. it turned out the car was clocked, and instead of 60K miles on the clock it should have read 160K. i learned a lesson that day, namely if you ever come across a car salesman in hampshire called malcom seal, avoid this crooked bastard.

i was stuck with a car i couldnt sell, so it sat in my garage. to cheer myself up i bought a brand new nissan 200sx. this thing was a flying machine, and brilliant fun to drive.. but after accumulating 9 points in the first 6 weeks of owning it, i new it had to go.....

ok, so the 200sx had to go. i was now getting into the habit of changing cars every few months. i guess it was just a phase i was going through.

I fell in love with a mercedes e class coupe/convertible. It was gorgeous. dark metallic green, with cream leather interior. it was only a year old and it was a main dealer car, but i had figured with the trade in for my nissan and a couple of grand, and i would be ok. imagine my surprise when he offered me 10 GRAND less than i had paid for it. that guy was very lucky not to get a sore face that day. I stormed off, and ended up at the jaguar dealership, where they had a beautiful green xj6 sitting on the forecourt for the same money as the merc. I thought the merc was nice, but once you sat in the jag, it just felt right. it was beautiful. it was one of the last 'old shape' jags and it was fully loaded. he offered me book on the nissan, and a deal was done, except i then said 'any interest in an old rover 820? only 60K miles on the clock....he took it, and the whole deal ended up costing me about 500 quid in readies.

of course about 10 days later i got an irate phonecall from the dealership 'this cars been clocked' 'REALLY? thats shocking....bye'

this was a truly great car. 4.0Litre straight 6 engine. 20mpg but who cared business was good. I remember the day i got it, i went to show my parents it, and ended up going down to the shops to pick up my mum. i was like one of those scenes from a film where the boy done good comes home.

i have a picture of it somewhere i will post it in a bit. wonder where the car is now...

#3 in black though.

I loved this car. i spent a few quid making it faster, fast road cam, engine blueprint and racing manifold and exhaust. Zender twin light conversion.
Unfortunately although it was pretty quick I never even gave the brakes a thought.. oops! I did remember eventually when I couldn't stop at a crossroads and hit a mini metro. :)
That was 25 years ago and started me on a VW love affair. I've had 8 of them and currently have this in black.

i wanted my missus to buy one of them, until the salesman out on the test drive decided to be an arsehole and scared the crap out of her. nice one. she ended up getting a Gti somewhere else, but i keep wondering what could have been...

he sneaked the r32 pic in after I posted, that looks even better

It's probably not that much faster but the V6 engine is so torquey. It's got the DSG box which is fantastic and smooth. It just annoys me how much these things cost nowadays in comparison to my first GTi.

My mum had been paying an insurance policy on me up until i was 17. I cashed it and bought that 2nd hand corsa. Then when i got my newer corsa i got a 5k loan and part x'd the old car. Really wish i had just got a 5k loan from the start and bought a brand new car from the off!

MK 3 Cortina 2 litre GT. Silver with a black vinyl roof, like shit off a shovel. Paid £250 for her and the insurance was above that.

#2 for me. 1 year old black Ford Probe 2.5 V6. Absolute fanny magnet and I was only 20 when I had it.

This car gave me my first lesson in how expensive motoring can be (£1900 to insure!!) and how much cars can depreciate by over the course of 2 years!!!

And then #3.....

Ford Mondeo estate!!! Another [ ] fanny magnet.

Sigh.... This car gave me my first lesson in how boring life gets when you get engaged and start taking things seriously.....

And are they diplomatic plates? Impressive.

Yes that's my first yacht.  I just don't technically own it yet.

Diplomatic plates were all the rage when I was a teenager.  Some wanted go faster stripes, I just wanted the plates.  I also wanted the car to end up in the water for insurance purposes, hence the parking berth.

That was the first car I bought too only E reg. Black with maroon roof. So much filler in it, if I'd have hit some one with it they would have died of asbestosis.  ;D ;D Bought for £125 insurance £85 third party.

My 5th car after the Peugeot 205Gti

It was the best car ever. The Evo2 HF Lancia Integrale.  I sold it to an Irish rally Driver to turn into a GrpN car.

I'm no good at posting pics but I've been through a few in 10yrs

1. 1985 Vauxhall Nova 1.3 SR with K&N and twin webers. Great car until I smashed it lol

2. 1990 Vauxhall Nova 1.4 SR which was a pos I only bought because I was impatient and coudn't be arsed looking a more.

3. 1993 Vauxhall Calibra SE3 which was the longest lasting to date at around 2years.

4. 1991 MR2 Twin Turbo GTS ridiculous Go-Kart. Was all loaded up with HKS digital boost controllers Induction kits etc. I had it rebuilt in
2006 at a cost of about 4k, including Hybrid turbo, Silicon hoses and uprated cams I think it was. I garaged it as soon as I got it back
in April when I got the next car.

5. 2005 Audi A8 4.2 quattro which was the sickest car I've ever driven. It was fully loaded with everything including TV, which was
pretty useful for london traffic as I was living there at the time. Also got me banned as I picked up 4 speeding tickets in it. This
went end of 2006 and I was back to the MR2 which I smashed up spinning as I overtook someone in 3rd.

6. 2001 Lexus IS200 Sport which I bought late last year and as of yet have managed to avoid crashing or getting a ticket in.
