Title: US golf this week
Post by: bobby1 on February 25, 2010, 12:00:57 AM
The horridly named Waste Management Phoenix Open.

I think this might be a bet event as there are plenty near the top of the market that are either in poor form or have great course form but are much shorter in the betting than they usually are. Add to this a pretty solid weather forecast that  might show one side of the draw has an advantage and an often ignored change of grass type, from Poa ana the last few weeks to Bermuda greens and I have found a few bets I like. The weather forecast looks set to favour players that are out early the first day and late the 2nd day as the wind looks to be stronger in the PM on day one but lighter in  the PM on day two.

Main fancy at the prices Ryan Moore, who started the year with 3 top tens, then the tour moved away from Bermuda greens to poa ana and his form nosedived, he could simply be playing poorly but this is his fav grass type and he ran 6th here last year so at 66/1 or slightly bigger on the exchanges I think he is worth a little interest each way.

One that is drawn poorly but I am still giving  a chance to is Martin Laird who is a whopping 230+ on the exchanges after some poor events, again his best form is on this grass type, he also had a couple of decent events at the start of the year  until the diff grass events came along and this is his local course so could be an advantage( in truth there are a lot of players who are attached to this course this week so those 10 or so might have a little advantage) win and place(at around 30.00) on BF or Betdaq.

At shorter prices Watney  40.0, Kuchar 44.0 and Richie Fowler 100.00 fall into the same category as good Bermuda grass players in ok form again this year, who along with Brian Gay( who i think is too short to bet at 34.0) have an early tee time on day 1 so had some small win only cover bets on those three.

Two to small stakes that havent fared so well with the tee times Charley Hoffman at 130.00 who ran 2nd last year and Jeff Quinney at over 200.00 whose best form almost every year is on this kind of grass have had a couple of fivers thrown at them too as they might go well if the draw doesnt beat them.

Obviously at these prices I might get a runner or two that goes well and might get to trade the possie a little near the business end

Any one else had/having a bet?

Just had a couple and I'm pleased to see that you listed them: Watney @40 and Hoffman @140.

I've also just taken the 16/1 kindly offered by B365 :) on Ji-Yai Shin after one round of the Ladies' event.

Chapman tipped up JYS this week and consequently she looked poor value to me at a best-priced 8/1. This morning's 16/1 seemed fair enough, I think Laddies were offering it too.

I did take the £7 that someone had put up on BF for Inbee Park @ 160 though as it looked like value.

Its sooo nice to see more people betting on golf.

Great way to win and lose cash with some awsome sweats

My tip for the US PGA is to wait until after round 1 and then get on, still lots of value and prices about.

I am now on Ryuji Imada at 38-1

and I have layed Lefty at 11-1. He is way to short for me and always starts the golf season slowly. Looks like he had a few pies over Christmas as well.

Good to see we have some good runners between us. There could be a prob 2morrow tho, the weather forecast has a very iffy look to it.

There is  a big storm hitting the West Coast Friday night and should hit Phoenix sometime on Saturday afternoon, there is a good chance of quite a bit of rain, and winds will be around 10-15mph all day and up to 30mph in gusts in the afternoon , this of course makes it a lot more of a level playing field, and an early Saturday morning score might get close to the leaders if the wind really picks up on Saturday pm.

should be fun tho.

The only reason for this punt is that his Dad was born in Leeds. Unless someone has incorrectly edited Wikipedia to induce my punt, and if thats the case then i take my hat off to the perpatraitor.

fingers crossed 2morrow guys, the seniors courses are real pitch and putt in good weather, in his first two senior events  Couples was 2 behind Tom Watsons after 2 rounds, shot around 7 under in the last round and didnt win.

In his 2nd event he led by 2 shots going into the last round and shot 7 under in that round to beat Tommy Armour, who shot -10 in the last round by 1.

So hopefully there will be no drama's 2morrow but Lehman at -10 will be a tough opponent.

Doral "The Blue Monster" this week with a top-class but quite limited field as it's a WGC event.

I'm on Ross Fisher @ 90, and Nick Watney @ 50 so far. I also have a huuuuuuge outsider partially matched.

Now fully matched on the man I call "The Great Gonzo" aka Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano @ c450. This guy was one of the best ball-strikers on the European tour last season and seemed to be in contention every week for a couple of months before The Open. His putting can be a little hit and miss but at this price he looks tremendous value to me.

And my fourth and final member of this week's musketeers is Ollie Wilson @ 90 who surely must win a tourney soon.

Zach Johnson for me.  A couple of Top 10's on the course in recent years coupled with decent driving accuracy and GIR/putting stats.  Nice to think he shouldn't spray it off the tee too much with all that water about...!

Clearly have to play a few rounds of Doral on the Xbox this week now too  :)

The right one got there for you Mick, the turning point was the 14th, playing downwind Couples hit a shot to land short of the green and run to the hole and got it to 4 feet.

Pavin played the same shot but landed on a sprinkler head and it bounced 40 yards over the green into the desert, he managed to get it into the rough by the green with his next shot but ended up holing a 20 footer for bogey but it was a 2 shot swing and a very unlucky hole for him.

Couples is now over 70 under for his 12 rounds on the Senior tour this year. Happy days!

hi mate, I watched it on the golf channel.

he will take a lot of beating in the Majors on the Senior tour as there is a big changing of the guard on that tour with the new 50 year olds coming into the tour, Pavin, Allen,Lehman, Armour and Pernice are playing to such a good standard on the main tour they ave over taken the Roberts, Haas and Funks but the markets dont really take it into account yet.

Freddies favourite course is Augusta so he could be worth a bet to finish in the top 20 there, top US without Woods or some other market, I think Sandy Lyle managed a top 25 last year and Couples game is a good as it has been for a while.

The diff between Couples and Pavin was about 60 quid so I was rooting for Freddie as I knw you weren't on Pavin.

Haha Cheers.

I'll have alook at the markets for US open and def have an interest. I just seen his average drives this week was 313 yards thats ridic for the seniors.

Its a litle bit misleading because the Seniors courses really are pitch and putt with almost flat greens and the flag right in the middle but deffo a good sign he is right on his game.

Obviously I pressed after yesterday's level par opening round in the worse conditions of the afternoon.

25/1, they must be having a laugh. The girl who's leading has had one top ten finish in four years on the tour.

A good finish sneaked the place money Ralph, good work mate.

I was severely tempted to re-press after the 2nd round when some bookies were going 50/1 which I thought was even more rediculous than the 25's that I'd already taken after round one, but I persuaded myself that I was maybe getting a little obstinate as I already had £100 @ 10/1 and £50 ew @ 25/1 and that was enough invested.

She was actually cruising in 2nd place until making bogeys at both 16 and 17 but fortunately birdied the last for a share of third and 2/3rds of the place money and +£41 for me on the race.

Bugger, pity about the late bogeys.

The Kraft Nabisco Championship on the Ladies tour this week Ralph, live on Sky too I think. Looking at the field I think Shin will be fav  but it looks wide open so I am sure we will find something. That lady we chatted about early in the season is down to play too so will be interesting to see what price she is put in at.

Els surely must be a contender but i think the value has gone now.

It is usually an tourney I have very little outright bets on before the off. Mainly because the event has a pretty solid piece of form to it once they start. The last 10 winners were all in the top 5 after 2 rounds and I think this is down to there being a small amount of true birdie holes other than the par 5's, so when players get behind it is so tough to catch up as most of the players will have a chance on the par 5's but depending on pin placements the other holes are tough.

For example 8, 13 and 15 are par 5's but Amen corner in between can cost shots so almost everyone plays 9 to 12 in survival mode hopefully after a birdie at 8, then once thru the corner you are looking for birdies again until the last three where bar the traditional Sunday pin on 16 they play fairly tough.

I will prob have some top 20 or match bets and then play in running tho i have laid Woods, Stenson, Ogilvy and Westwood so far.

I think Tiger is a great bet for the masters. Best price you are going to get on him, ever.

He plays better when rested, the crowd are going to be loving him, it would be typical of his career story to win with all this stuff going on. He's also the best player and plays this course better than anyone.

Backing at 4/1 on betfair, if he gets anywhere near the top of the leaderboard at any point the betting will revert to type and he'll be even money or odds on.

My queer  ::)

Not on Shin yet Micko, I didn't really think 10/1 was great value as she's played indifferently here the last two years.

I've just bet on Inbee Park to be top5+ties @ 10/1 so far.

Seniors golf time again and the old tired guys are still taking up a lot of the market.

After Couples 6th placed finish in the Masters some firms seem happy to get after him and it make sense I suppose as this will be his 5th week in a row and did have some back trouble last week. There has to be a small chance he might pull out too so it makes sense to have a bet early just in case and Tom Lehman each way at 11/1 looks rock solid given he is the 2nd best golfer on the tour.

He has played 3 senior events this season and finished 3rd 4th and 5th with every round between 65 and 69. This gives him a 9 round total of 42 under par for those 3 comps and has 3 starts on the main US tour with two finishes in the top 16, form which almost everyo0ne on the seniors tour bar Couples would love to have.

So each way Lehamn at 11/1 looks good and if Couples pulls out we are on a great price. If Couples does confirm he will play then I am going to back him win only at the 13/5 and have 2 running for me again.

gl all

I've followed the lehman tip in, looks a nice enough price, lets win win win.

Done a few golf bets myself this week on the heritage.

2pts win Matt Kuchar@28-1

Nice record this season and didn't look to over extend himself at the masters-something i feel is crucial here, def a threat against this weak looking field overall.

2pts win Camillo Villegas@31-1

Another who is flying this season, and his bad week at the masters dsnt put me off, seems a value price for some1 who could just tear this up with his great game.

1.5pts ew Brian Gay@35-1

Won this by ten shots last year, and has been consistently up there with his stats this year.

1pt ew Chris Couch@150-1

On a medical exemption he has finished 4th twice in recent weeks, genuinely seems a fighter.

1pt ew Ricky barnes@150-1

Impressed at the masters and i really think he is value here, should be nearer the 100-1 mark.

hi mate,

Ive bet couples to win a little overall with the main go on Lehman, 80 quid ew at 11/1 lehman and 100 quid on couples at 13/5. So ive staked it to win a 100 quid if couples wins and will have a small loss should couples lose and lehman gets a place. Obv couples could win and lehman be placed and we get two returns or lehman wins and we get a good win.

In your example the place bet on lehman would almost cover your stakes, with the win bet making a nice profit, should couples win you make a nice profit so it looks like a good staking plan mate.

Cheers for that mate, just wanted to check i hadn't put too much on couples.

Freddie cost me quite a bit last week by placing 6th rather than top 5, but he played great, bit concerned of after lords mayor's show syndrome in this tournie, but tbh the guy is obv diff gravy if anywhere near his best V this lot.

Anyway go lehman! :)

well we had a mare there. Lehman shot 75 and is 9 behind after the first round, that is his worst round on this tour this season by 6 shots, so i'm not really sure what happened there. Couples shot level par and is 6 back at the mo, very tough from there in a 3 round tourney.

So sick last week, actually thought barnes was nailed on for the place at juicy odds, was third by himself with four to play, two bogeys later and he dead heat's for fifth, meaning i barely made a profit.

Anyway i've done my bets nice and early for the zurich classic on thursday, i'm sure i may add 1 or two more as the tournie progresses, but for now my portfolio is the following:

2pts win Ian Poulter@16-1

Nice and refreshed after taking the week off following the masters, he placed highly in this last year, and in a lower than usual quality field looks to have a great chance with his game.

1.5pts ew Charles Howell III@28-1

Has a very decent record here over the years and is in fairly good form in prev weeks. Another who's game should thrive in new orleans.

1pt ew Brian Davis@80-1

Very unlucky last week, clearly in good form and strikes me as a streaky player, basically overpriced.

1pt ew Chris Couch@125-1

Sticking with my selection from last week, he's a dark horse with the game to compete, and has a hunger to make certain of his card.

Ok so poults is a non runer, as is prev market leader stricker, not all bad as ive got value on the howell bet which is much shorter now due to those withdrawls.

Gone in for a couple of others to make my portfolio more rounded, well just to gamble really :)

1pt ew Graham De Laet@100-1

He was on my shortlist originally just failing to make my list. Had a nice enough place result a couple of weeks back and looks an improver at a nice price.

0.5pt ew David Duval@200-1

Been signs recently he might just be still 'there' kind of on occasion. Wouldn't be a hugely confident pick but a massive price amongst players who'd never reach hights he once did, go on dd...for old times sake!

Very early days but a nice start for my bets in the Zurich Classic. Couch is in 2nd (-5), Duval and Howell tied back in 7th (-4), while  Davis hasn't put himself out of it with a one under par round, and only Delaet at +2 looks up against it.

After a terrible week punting wise i could really do with a result here, here's hoping.
