Title: Computer Problem
Post by: TheChipPrince on March 05, 2010, 01:11:43 PM
G/f's computer has spazzed out on her.

When it starts up it has the message 'msls51.dll', no desktop icons and nothing showing, no toolbar etc.

cnt/alt/del is the only thing that works and she can access stuff through that.

Is there a way to access System Restore through New Task>Browse> ? ? ?

Or any other ideas??

On the Keyboard press (all at the same time) CTRL ALT Delete

When the Task Manager cones up go to File > New Task > then type in explorer.exe and click OK.

Did your desktop come up?

or try

On the Keyboard press (all at the same time) CTRL ALT Delete

When the Task Manager cones up go to File > New Task > then type in rstrui.exe and click OK.

Do you get the System restore window?

Sounds like the remnants of a trojan, you probably want to fix it up properly and review your pc security arrangements.

Most people don't, they just get it working again and assume it's ok.

It's usually the other way around!

If you can get an install disk I'd just wipe it clean and start again. That way you're pretty sure it's clean.

None of the 'Removes all trojans', registry cleaners etc any good than Bongo?

It's usually far quicker to reinstall than faff around with all of those. Reinstalling also means you know the system is clean and windows tends to slow down after it's been installed for a while so you tend to get a nice performance boost too.
