Title: Cheltenham Festival Day 1
Post by: The Camel on March 14, 2010, 07:45:56 PM
Here are my bets so far for day 1:

Supreme Novices: I have layed a massive bet on Dunguib at evens. I am purely doing a Blatch and hoping the price moves out. Although he could be anything, he hasn't proven himself out of the top drawer quite yet and with doubts over his jumping I feel sure he's going on the slide. I'm looking to trade out at 2.2 or 2.24 for a juicy freeroll.

I've also had £200 ew Menorah @ 14/1 and £100 ew Get Me Out of Here @ 7/1

Arkle: Captain Cee Bee is a favourite to oppose in my opinion. I feel the Cheltenham fences will be his undoing and 9 is very old to be winning an Arkle. Somersby ticks all the right boxes for me and I'm heavily involved with £400 ew @ 11/2.

Champion: I can't get my head round this, I feel it's wide open. The only bet I've had is £50 ew Zaynar @ 8/1. I'll probably stick at that, unless I have some massive flash of inspiration.

Mares Hurdle: I had a massive negative for Quevaga at the start of last week, but instead of laying it I just went in head down on Voler La Vedette having £800 ew @ 5/2. The sort of bet you would never be layed at any other meeting. I'll probably trade the win portion of the bet but keep the place getting 5/8 about a true 1/3 shot.

I've had no bets in the handicaps yet, usually wait til the morning of the races to get involved.

GL everyone, keen to hear everyone elses bets for Day 1.

They won't let the ground get faster than good. The taps will be turned full on.

The betfair market makes soft 250 and heavy 500, so the chances of anything unexpected are remote in the extreme.

It will probably open G/S and firm up through the week and be good for the Gold Cup. That's what has happened recently anyways.

Agree that Duinguib will drift, crazy price at the moment imo and bookies will look to take it on.  Haven't had a bet in the race as yet but Get Me Out of Here would be my idea of winner - totesport trophy form is always strong, and v impressive for novice to win that.

No strong opinion in the Arkle, I think Sports Line may be the best of the Irish (not keen on Cee Bee or Sizing Europe)

Backed Medermit in the Champion @ 33/1 and dont see any reason he cant be in the shake up in an open year - prob hopeful rather than confident... I do think its the sort of horse that will be at its best running at championship pace in large field so fingers crossed

Backed Voler la Vedette @ 3/1 couple of weeks ago in Mares Hurdle.. I actually thought there was a big chance Quevega may not run after being off all year not having ideal recent prep - and even if she did turn up was a fair chance the price would drift - obv pleased with how this is working out although bizarrely everything I have read from mullins suggests he's really happy with her

Only bet so far is £50 win on Get me out of here in Supreme Novices with Paddy Power so I get stake back if Dunguib wins.

Will have a proper look tonight at the rest of the meeting and the weather forecasts for the week ahead before getting a few more on.

Adds more weight to view its 2 horse race, no? They could argubly both be runnning in the champion and think class will tell here personally

Keith,

Do you know if Betfair will close the ante post book on the Dunguib race 2morrow and create the new market for Tuesdays race, if they do does that mean there will be two lots of commision to pay as they will have an ante post wager and a day of the event wager too?

Or will they simply use the previous market with the updated runners left in?

cheers

I really fancy Dunguib, It's a 1/2 shot in my book but i haven't played yet as it seems nailed on to drift and I'm drooling at the thought of getting 6/4ish.

I honestly think that those crabbing about it's jumping are being fooled by the fact that most of the Irish races are run on very soft going and at a very slow pace until the last four furlongs. It seems to me that it jumps fine when the pace quickens but struggles over it's hurdles like many good horses do when it's travelling slower than it's preferred racing gallop.

The Champion Hurdle is very interesting this year but I'm quite strong on Go Native who has slaughtered everything it's met this year on good ground. Again I expect it to drift and thusly have not yet played. I also feel that Punjabi, another good ground animal will probably be a nice ew bet at around 10/1 should that be available.

Captain Cee Bee seems too short at the 3/1 curently offered in The Arkle to my mind although if it jumps a clear round it will doubtless be hard to beat. This is currently a watching brief for me, although Sizing Europe seems like a safe jumper and might appeal ew.

The two markets will be combined in terms of comission paid Phil, should you be lucky enough to show a profit :)

don't understand this since he's beaten everything put in front of him out of sight, at grade 1 level too. he's got less to prove than the others imo. can't really bring myself to back at the prices on offer at cheltenham but memories of seeing him slaughter them at last year's festival might tempt me...

Phil,

This is from their rules:

Betfair may suspend ante post markets at any stage to protect customers and carry out necessary administration, including in some cases the cancellation of unmatched bets. By their nature, ante post markets can be volatile and customers are responsible for managing their bets on this market at all times.

And I've had the bet on a matesa account who is on 2% so that helps even more.

He's been impressive, but so has Oscar Whiskey and Get Me Out of Here.

He's evens and the other two are huge prices.

If Dunguib was bigger I wouldn't be opposing him, but evens is a stupid price.

I had a good Cheltenham last year but can see me doing my nuts in this year.
Willl probably stick with Karabiner and the other decent betors.
I think he kicked us off with Captain Cee Bee last year and i never really looked back.

Menorah e/w in the Novice.

Riverside Theatre e/w in the Arkle if his odds drift out any bit.

Silk Affair e/w in the Mares Hurdle.

Hadn't thought much about it as we've been hyped up waiting for Cassie to land.  Will have another look later if I get time, but that's yer lot from the female side of the fence... so far.

I have spent this morning checking out the best bookies offers over the festival and I like the following -

Paddy Power - up to £200 refunded (win only part of E/W bet) back if Dunguib wins the Supreme Nov ( 1st race of the festival ) - I keep looking at this offer and just think WOW

Victor Chandler - Yankee / Super Yankee up to £110 full stake refunded if you have only one winner. (refunded as a free bet on the following day)

Sporting Bet - Faller refunds on all festival races

Bet Fred - up to £100 free if you lose on the Supreme Nov Hurdle

As with all of these offers it is probably worth checking out the bet terms and conditions with the bookie before placing your bets.

As Chris metioned above if you can bet with Betfred then their offer is probably better.
No matter who wins if your horse doesn't win you get your money back - takes 2 days but it'll be there for you to use at cheltenham later in the week.

So far I have placed the following: -

£200 @ 4/1 Get me out of here with Paddypower.  If SP if bigger than 4/1 I get the bigger price and if Dunguib wins (currently 10/11) then I get my £200 back.

£100 @ 4/5 Dunguib with Betfred.  If he loses I get a £100 free bet which will go on Federer to win his next tennis game at 1.01 before I withdraw.

Both cracking opening offers IMO

Double with Easter Legend, Khyber Kim

Double with Go Native, Dunguib

so ive gone £25 on Get me out of here @ 4/1, and my £25 free bet on Dunguid @ Evens

So £25 staked:

if Dunguib wins, i win £25 + £25 returned stake from GMOOH = £50 total
if GMOOH win, i win £125 total

any other winner, £25 down

£25 Staked:

Dunguib wins i get £25 returned stake from GMOOH losing = Breaking even
GMOOH wins i get £125 back = £100 profit

The way ive done it:

Dunguib wins i get £25 winnings only, but not the Stake as its free bet = £25 profit
GMOOH wins i get £125 back = £100 profit

so i just using the free bet to try to turn it into £25 hard cash in hand on the Fav

Binocular has been ruled out of the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle due to a muscle problem.

Nicky Henderson's charge finished third behind stablemate Punjabi in the Cheltenham Festival feature last term and had been the favourite to claim the crown at the start of the season.

However, an odds-on disappointment on his reappearance in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle last November was followed by another defeat, albeit a narrow one, in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton.

Binocular bounced back to winning form in a moderate event at Sandown earlier this month, but despite his easy success, Henderson was not satisfied and the six-year-old underwent a full examination.

Henderson said: "He's completely sound but a minor, yet significant, muscle problem has been diagnosed and explains our concerns.

"We feel we don't have sufficient time to treat this in order for him to do himself justice in the Champion Hurdle.

"We have unfortunately decided to put him away for the season to ensure he can begin next term as normal and 100% for a full campaign, which we obviously hope will lead us back to Champion Hurdle."

Hmm, ran well considering he's not gonna be there.

Got me out a little bit.

Blatch, you owe me one.

The only reason it won was because i decided not to top up to get out of it properly!

Just gonna lump all my account balances on Master Minded tomorrow I think.

Anyone got anything exciting tomorrow?

Luckiest day ever.

Kept far more of the Dunguib bet than I wanted, but the jockey came to my rescue and Menorah was awesome.

Tried to lay Sizing Europe and Binocular, but neither got matched.

Played Voller perfectly by getting rid of all the win bit of the bet and keeping all the place.

Even managed to find Chief Dan George on the Tote in the WH Chase. :d

Only downer: Garde Champ not getting placed cost me getting the placepot for £40 :(

Roll on Day 2!

great stuff mate, how about this for the worst bet of the day, I thought new story would go well without winning, bet it tote place with a tiny win bet at sp and it paid 3.70 for a place. sp 25/1.

£100 @ 4/5 Dunguib with Betfred.  If he loses I get a £100 free bet which will go on Federer to win his next tennis game at 1.01 before I withdraw.

Hope you didnt do that!
