Title: Your first ever football match?
Post by: Longy on March 23, 2010, 12:24:12 AM
Just being watching East Anglia's version of late kick off (regional football league show) and it has got me all nostalgic. As they featured my first ever game.

I was 5 years old and my dad took me to watch my local team at Wembley. Norwich vs Sunderland 1985 milk cup final, we won 1-0 and that was it I was Norwich fan, gg Dad who wanted me to follow his team Exeter.

25th anniversary on Wednesday. We sure have won a major trophy since.

My first memory of Leeds United was not a match it was the Division One Championship parade in 1992. I was only 5 but remember this huge flag me and my Dad had and watching all the celebrations in the town centre and seeing Strachan and co doing their speeches. I dont remember much from it, but i remember flashes.

The first match though that i remember was when i was 11.

Leeds v Wolves in the FA Cup Quarter Finals.

Previous to this i didnt watch football, i jus played it. Apparently whenever it was on TV i used to moan coz i wanted to watch Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles or something. I believe i had a Liverpool shirt when i was little because i lived with my Mum and all her side of the family are all from Liverpool and big fans so i wasnt given a choice.

Then i went to see my Dad one weekend and he took me to Elland Road. It was incredible. It was pooring down and we lost 1-0 to a penalty in like the 81st minute but the atmosphere was unbelieveable, it was just brilliant and from then on i begged my Dad to take me every week and he got me a season ticket for the next season and i've had one ever since.

I googled the match and could only find this:
Three years later he (Don Goodman) was off to Wolves in a deal worth £1.1million. The highlight of his time at Molineux came in 1998 when he scored the winning goal against his boyhood idols Leeds United, to take Wolves to the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 17 years.

1979 Queens Park Rangers 1 v 0 Aston Villa.

Rachid Harkouk smashed home the winner from a Dave Thomas cross.

We were relegated that season :( Some things never change.

Not really into football more rugby tbh. However, I'm from Preston originally and my cousin is a massive Preston Nob end fan and him and his restaurant used to sponsor the football at all the games and he'd get an anounncement over the tannoy etc.

He took me to about 3 or 4 games in a row when I was 11 or 12ish and they lost all of them, because of that he refused to ever take me again as he said I was a bok rotflmfao

Northampton Town vs Swindon sometime in 1962/3.

4-0 to the Cobblers with goals by Frank Large and Peter Cane leading to the headline in the 'Pink 'un' being "Cobblers give Swindon Large Caning"

Think my first ever game was a stunning Grimsby vs Millwall in the old first division 0-0 on last day of the 93/94 season (when i was 6). But don't really remember that much and don't seem to remember enjoying it too much tbh. I think we only went because my Nan had some spare tickets when we lived there for a while. From this game i was never going to be a Grimsby fan after this and was going to go along my Dads roots of being LEEEEEEEDS.

My first experience that i fully remember was the 1995-96 season. 30th March, as it was a few days after my birthday my Dad got me a ticket and took me to see them, a team he'd supported since he could remember. I was excited but it turned out to be a bad day and we lost 1-0 to a 4th min Graham Kavanagh penalty (always disliked him since). But this was my 1st love for Leeds, and why i have supported Leeds and loved football ever since.

....two truly stunning 1st games, 0-0 and a 1-0 loss.

I can remember which was first out of:

Liverpool 1 Chelsea 3 - pretty sure Wise missed a Pen for Chelsea, and Vinny Jones scored a cracker from 30 yards for them

Wrexham 5 Winsford Utd 2 - Fa Cup '91, round one of the FA cup, next round they beat Telford, round after, Arsenal!

Stirling Albion v Albion Rovers in about 1980. Finished 2-2. Real top quality entertainment. The fans could even swap ends at half-time so they could stay behind the opponent's goal. Both fans were happy about that.

Sat at the family stand end with Shilton in goal, Luton wearing orange and only a few scattered memories of it

Next game the following April far better, Leicester 2 Leeds 1, Yorath sent off...midweek and the atmosphere under the lights got me hooked

Can't remember my first game ... would have been a Luton game in the early 70's ... Dad took me and my brother to every home game, we used to stand in the "Bobbers stand" so called because it cost a bob extra to get in there (it had a roof LOL).

I think my brother and I used to spend most of the game running up and down the front of the stand using the plastic bovril cups as a football :D

First ever was apprently Bermuda X1 v Celtic in 1970 - but I was too young to remember it, my Mum took me because Dad was playing.

First I remember was Celtic v Queen of the South in a Scottish Cup tie in January 1982 - Paul McStay's first start IIRC. Wasn't a Celtic supporter before that day - have been ever since.

I can't remember how old I was. Maybe 6/7 and we'd just signed Ruud Gullit so was mega excited.

Was at the Bridge but we didnt even have proper chairs in our stand, just like a row of concrete blocks and it was pretty f cold.

Only problem was it was vs the crazy gang. Dan Petrescu scored an awesome early goal and then Vinnie Jones abs flattened Gullit. He got sent off and Gulliit off injured. Welcome to england Ruud. [  ] Love Vinnie.

We then went on to lose 2-1 against 10 men.

St James park 1973,age 5.
Tony Greens testimonial  -my dad still says he's best player that ever wore black and white-  career ended at 26.

All i can remember is that you got peanuts in a paper bag, strange what sticks in your head.

First away game,Elland road 1983.

Chris waddle scored the only goal, fighting going on before, during and after the game, everything a teenage kid could want, hooked on away games forever.

Hmmm first away game (not sure going to prematch friendlies vs Peterborough really count) was Leicester away in the FA cup at Filbert Street, early 97' think it was the 4th round.

I was interviewed by 90minutes magazine cos I was there like 4 hours early, which I gave some really crap answer to the question about the proposal to go from 3 to 2 relegation spots from the Prem to the 2nd tier. Still got the magazine somewhere and my mates in 6th form took the piss for a good year about it.

We lost 2-1, pretty sure Neil Adams scored a pen for us. He basically never missed, best penalty taker I have ever seen.

Remeber the away stand at Filbert st being a bit of a hole with loads of stantions blocking lines of sight.

After that game, I decided that I was going to travel the country watching Norwich, [ ]shrewd idea [ ] great value for money. I have seen Norwich at over 50 different grounds in England now.

first game I can identify was a 3rd round fa cup replay against spurs the day after my 11th birthday. we were 2 down and loads of people were leaving then we got a late penalty and everyone piled back in when they heard the cheer. still lost 2-1 though

I'd been going for years before that though but no specific memories. mostly I just remember how big it was, at the time I think the valley was still the biggest ground in the country and the east terrace was definitely the biggest there was (possibly the biggest ever), dads up the back, kids down the front having a laugh

My Dad took me to my first game, Arsenal v Ipswich at Highbury, 19th March 1985.    I was 11 at the time.   Sat in the upper west.     Can't remember much about the match, my main memory was how cold it was that night and how big Highbury was, it seemed massive.   Game finished 1-1.  Still have the tickets somewhere and found the program on ebay for about £1 a couple of years ago.

My first senior game was 8/10/1983 at Ibrox, Rangers 1 Hibs 0, John McLelland scored the goal. According to wiki there were 21800 at the game which was about average at the time.

Exeter City vs Northampton, winter of 86 or 87 I think. It was a game so bereft of quality that after about 25 minutes I turned to my Dad and asked him why the teams weren't trying to score.

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest.  It was such a long time ago it featured the holy trinity - Charlton, Law and Best.  Was a great day.

1972 Scottish League Cup Final:

Hibs 2 Celtic 1

Hibs also won the Drybrough Cup that year again beating Celtic 5-3

However Celtic gubbed Hibs 6-1 in the Scottish Cup Final in May that year.

Leeds v Blackburn around 1997 midweek game what i think was a coca-cola cup game

I went with my older cousin(12) me been 11

Think we won 1-nil with Danny Mills scoring a 25 yarder, hitting a free kick under the wall

But remember this for what happened after match, me n my coz decided to walk down the motorway to get back to town and 5 mins on a police van pulls up n yells at us to get in. They then get radioed for help somewhere and forcefully boot us out before screeching off leaving us on the hard shoulder but closer to town!

I agree, there was something different about going there. I think it was the way it felt like the ground was in people's back gardens which it basically was

The Blackpool team that day included the great Stanley Matthews who played in the top flight until he was over fifty !

I would guess Celtic at either Dens or Tannadice.

Earliest memory was East Fife v Hibs in the Scottish cup when East Fife won 2-1 which was great for me as Celtic played the winners away. Celtic won 6-0. Remember Gordon Marshall was still in goals for East Fife and John Colquhoun took a shy right in front of me and i could've grabbed his shirt.

My Grandad and Uncle took me Boxing day 1979 Norwich vs Ipswich, 3-3 draw.  I seem to remember the Ipswich fans making the whole stand move.
I think Grandad hoped this would turn me Yellow and Green, and he knew it would annoy the hell out of my old chap.  Dad took me to Wembley about 5 months later and I was a Gooner forever.

first home fixture i can remember going to was against leeds on the 18/01/1975 which ended in 2 0 defeat.

my earliest recollection of an away game was the same season at white hart lane 19/04/1975 when we also lost 2 0 with the match marred by crowd trouble where a famous photo of alfie conn (sp?) on the pitch surrounded by hundreds of fans.
the result relegated chelsea to a couple of seasons in the old 2nd division and i remember sitting in my high vantage point at the top of shelf crying my eyes out whilst the spurs fans sang "bye bye chelsea" to the tune by the bay city rollers "bye bye baby" whilst celebrating on the pitch.

since that day ive hated spurs with a passion!!!
