Title: The Masters Golf 2010 - tipping thread
Post by: chrisbruce on April 05, 2010, 12:25:20 PM
This year I am having a very tough time trying to narrow down the golfers I think could win this to those I will put money on.
To kick this thread off though here are some thoughts on some of the main contenders.

Tiger 5-1         Interesting to see how he handles the media this week, but a big price compared to previous years.
Lefty  14-1      Needs to sort out his driving to compete this week, not for me
Ernie Els 15-1   Playing great golf and in top form
Padraig   20-1  Relishes the majors but no value at that price
Stricker  29-1  Yet to show last years great form
Goosen 28-1   Great player but has proved to be unreliable when in contention lately
Casey 38-1      Has the game to win. pulled out last week with a shoulder injury is a concern
Westwood 25-1 His driving gives him a big advantage at Augusta but will the putting hold up on the slick greens
Villegas 42-1    At the top of his game and with putting problems behind him has a great chance
Poulter 38-1    Relishes the big stage and has the game to win here
Kaymer 50-1   Great golfer but has not impressed yet playing in the USA
Mcilroy 60-1    Great golfer but has not impressed yet playing in the USA
Schwartzel 60-1 Massive talent can compete with the best but a masters debutant is a big ask

Other golfers I like at big prices

Alvaro Quiros 170-1
Graeme Mcdowell 160-1
Francesco Molinari 260-1
Ryo Ishikawa 520-1
Oliver Wilson 290-1
Fred Couples 120-1

As Andres Romero seems to have withdrawn I am now left with these outsiders that I feel have some value:

Mike Weir @ 110, K.J Choi @ 110, and Edoardo Molinari @ 250.

So cant wait to the masters!!

So far im on Kaymer Harrington Schwartzel and i really fancy Schwartzel for top debutant at around 7to2.

Woods out to 5's could be a redic price.

Ive taken Matt Kuchar each way in the top American without Woods market at 28/1 with Blue Sq.

I think this is a nice market to play in given Mickleson has looked all over the place recently. Kuchar is usually rock solid and playing well at the moment.

Ok money is down

Tiger       10pts @  6.2

It will have a massive effect.

Remember golf is mostly a game of mental strength, pressure on Tiger will be immense.

His head has been all over the place this year.

10-1 is a fair price for this event.

Point taken flushy but

Tiger is a different man to the guy who was interviewed 6wks ago.

a few key points from todays interview.

He has been working hard on his game recently (hours and hours with Hank!)
It has been several years since his fitness was at this level ( achilies, knee etc)
At this event the crowd are going to be 100% behind him.
It will be worth 10pts to bok your bet  ;D

no mention for Kim at all?

Els - putting has been great and bunker play top notch, but erratic off the tee imo. Not for me.

Ty for this m8, looks very useful.

I've heard u raving about couples on the senior tour a few times recently.

You think evens on him for to be top senior is an ok price? Personally i don't think he has much to beat at all and should be odds on.

I backed Kim  ..think he is future major winner for sure and when gets in the zone really can shoot low - think it was 2nd round here last year he shot a 65 or something, obv in great form at the min also

Also backed the goose 28/1, who seems to be right back in form

My dark horse is Sean O'Hair @ 66/1 who could of been right in the shake up last year other a bad 2nd round.

FWIW I wouldn't back Tiger with stolen money, I know he's probably not human but to turn up and win this after everything that has happened would be incredible - obv not impossible, but not likely imo.... Should be epic viewing anyway

Paul Casey is the one for me

His stats don’t look good for the masters, but surly Ian Poulter has to be in with a shout (Each way)

Hi Nico,

I think Couples is head and shoulders above most of the senior tour tho Watson and Langer would be in the group of players in behind him on that tour. A couple of things put me off, he has a great record here but has missed the last 2 cuts, even tho he only just missed them. One other thing against Couples this week is he has a bad back which is always worse in cold/windy weather. Ive just got an up to date weather forecast and there looks like being a significant advantage to the payers that tee off ealry on the first day, with the winds set to be strong on the morning of the second day an early day one and late day two looks the best draw by far.

So it might be worth waiting til the tee times are out later today and then taking a look at the merket again.

The Kuchar price is as short as 14/1 in some spots now. He does seem to have been very much under rated in most of the markets he is in, the outright price is getting shorter too and he is 50/1 with a couple of firms to win the event but you can still bet 66/1 with Stan without Woods, so that has to be value too. He is a top price of 80/1 to win outright so the 66/1 also looks good when you are taking Tiger out.

Still probably better waiting to see the tee times tho before getting too invovled.

Goosen - Missed the cut last year after a first round 76, but from 2002 went 2nd, 13th, 13th, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 17th, MC. Good form this year and a consistent Augusta performer which counts more than anything. My top pick - 25/1

Ross Fisher - creditable 30th place at the first attempt last year, despite a second round 76. Vying with McIlroy to be the next British major winner. Matured tremendously over the last couple of years and should improve on last year's showing. Great price @ 66/1

Villegas - 4th time here, MC, MC then 13th last year after 73, 69, 71, 69. Lad seems to be growing year on year in general, and last year found his way around. He's a bit short priced, but small bet - 35/1

Geoff Ogilvie - 4 Masters, made the cut in them all. Best finish last year in 15th, after a closing 69. Bit of a streaky player, but when he's hot he can run away with it. He'll see you safely into the weekend for your wager, can he step up to a challenge this year? 45/1

Westwood - Good finish this week in Houston, but a mixed Masters track record, though he's been on the form of is career over the last two seasons, his putting, as so much evidenced in last year's Open, has let him down. He's in danger of following Monty and Darren down the great European player that couldn't close out a major path. Expect to show, but not push the winner, a small bet at poor odds that are too short - 22/1

I took Haas after seeing the tee times of some of the fancied ones in this market.

Scwartz, Na,Dyson,Wood and Duffner all have what looks to be the wrong tee times and Haas is out early and is in good form.

Hi Gents,

Just thought I would throw in my 2 pennies worth.

Ernie Els is in cracking form - 16/1 gets a few pennies from me.

Steve Stricker no.2 in world and looks overpriced at 30/1 with Billy Hills. Again a few pennies.

Ian Poulter - got to have a patriotic bet, and it was a toss up between leading brits - best value at 40/1 with extrabet.

But here is my problem, I really want to back Woods to miss the cut, but cant believe the ridic odds that are availabe. If a man is generally 5/1 to win the tournement, how the hell can he be only 4/1 to miss the cut!! I know it is all about the percentages and over-rounds, but I really cant work it out. Hopefully Mr Hawkins or someone with better knowledge than me can enlighten me!

Good luck with all your wagers.

Steve

Tiger to finish:

11th or worse - 6/5
11th - 20th - 6/1
21st or worse - 2/1

Think by the time you take into possible ties in the 11 - 20 range, cant see any real value.

Hope he wins for you James.

Had a punt on singh ew@90-1, obv his bad back is factored in2 that price, i just feel if that does hold up the price is huge, course form is massive here.

Also done ogilvy ew@45-1, he def seems one overpriced, a year or so back he'd have been as short as 20-25-1 for this.

Backed goosen with boyles@25s, if tiger wins but the goose is second i still win my bet.

Also got a few small ew bets on rags like flesch-top 6 last 2 years@300-1, todd hamilton@600s and chris wood@300s.

Good luck all!

Highlights of every hole tiger has played are on the leaderboard.(Masters website)

Split the fairway with drivers  1 2 and 3

Unlucky with tee shot on 4 but great up and down par save

-1

Tiger started the tournament at 6/1.  Odds have been tumbling. Best price is now 7/2 on Betfred.  Most sites are 5/2 though.

Bookies are scared to death that he might actually win.

I am not ready to lay off my Tiger bet yet.
I hope to see him hole a few more puts and maybe take control of the tournament  ;D
I dont think any other player had as many opportunities to post a low score in the 1st round.

Of those players at the top of the leaderboard

Watson & Couples both scored well but 24 puts each is exceptional, and it will be hard to keep that up.
I didnt think KJ Choi played that well but he did scored great (again great putting), his ball flight is all wrong for this course and I expect him to drop of the pace.
The main dangers for me come from Mickelson, Westwood, Poulter and Kim all of whom can shoot very low.
If Mickelson keeps the driver on the fairway he could be a big danger.

I wish i was on westwood, i really fancy him to win it if tiger lets me down. His attitude and game are in great nick.

Tiger could easily be leading by 2 or 3 if he had made a few putts yesterday, he left so many on the brink.

They forecast the greens to get tougher as the week goes on which should help remove some of the chaff but if the weather doesn't deteriorate then it keeps so many in with a chance.

I have to give credit though to Mr Woods. I really thought he would struggle, but with luck could I could find no value to see him balls it up.

Good luck whos wagers are still in with a chance, should be a cracking weekend.

I've greened out on Tiger.

Westwood bottled it so badly in the Open last year, even though he's playing fantastically he can't be trusted.

Poulter has never struck me as a major winner.

I always want to be against Mickelson in majors.

So really I can only be with Kim and Choi and I'd rather have Tiger than those two obv.

Tiger playing like an utter clown and he is just 4 off the lead, how was he ever 5-1 such a ridic price, looks like we might all become the victims of variance though, sigh.

Are you still sweating it for the lot,I'm probably just gonna watch this later on and rail Tiger home, poker is not for Sundays.

Just laid Mickelson at 6/4 and Westwood at 7/4.

I'm getting 7/2 anyone elses wins, which is an amzing price.

In the past 20 years only once has the winner not been in the final pairing.

But how often has the final pairing been 2 total bottlers?

You may not like Mickelson Camel but he is not and never has been a bottler when in contention. When the presuure is on he can play some amazing stuff.

Tiger is not out of this but he has to do something special on the front nine to get back in contention down the stretch.
Mickelson and Westwood are not going to give him back 4 shots he will have to make it happen.

I expect Westwood to grind out a 2/3 shot lead from Mickelson on the front nine which he has played better than anyone all week.
If he is going to win he will need that 2/3 shot cushion going into the back nine as that is where Mickelson can really get going.

Should be a fantastic finish to a great tournament.

I think Westwood will come of age and prove his critics wrong.

Anyone bar Tiger for me plz.

Ive got Woods for loads for the firm and ive bet no European major winner this season so Westy no good, plus the guy doing the side markets for me has bet Mickleson to win around 10k so its gonna be a big Phil love in for us.

Ive taken a little bit of Cabrera to beat Perry in todays 2 balls and got a cheer on for Jerry Kelly top 20 and an outside chance of the place money in the top US w/o Woods market. Bill Haas is tied for the lead in the top debutant so its going to be fun filled long day.

gl all.

Remember the US Open when he and Monty totally bottled it?

A man with his talent should have won multiple majors, he dogs it under pressure.

I agree Mickelson should have won more majors but he is what he is which is a very streaky player.
His course management is non existant, and to play the game at this level as a massive risk taker is impressive.
This is why his game suits the risk/reward of Augusta and not the highly penilising US Open.

for the record I dont particuarly like the guy either and will be gutted if he wins.

I don't think there is a "best" course.

You could put together 18 holes from totally different courses and make a superb round.

17th at St Andrews
15th at Wentworth
17th at Sawgrass
11th at Augusta

etc etc

Can't remember what its called but there is a course considered the best. They don't hold tournaments or anything and membership is ridic exclusive, was some scandal when members were charging 10k for a round to people, says something when you can afford 10k a round but can't be a member at the club.

Without his caddie Mickelson would be lost, not that his caddie is anything great but Mickelson needs to have his hand held the whole way round the course.

Thats is what his caddie is best at.

am not a golf fan on the whole,

but this is just freakingly superb stuff all played on whats has got to be the best course in the world??

Not the best, however i doubt there is a course kept in better condition.

which course is considered the best then?

All a matter of opinion but i would rather play Pebble Beach than Augusta.

St Andrews for me.

you played at all 3 keith?

LOL no, I wish, you need to be as rich as Blatch to play Augusta or Pebble Beach.

Anyone can play St Andrews (it's a public course), but you have to be lucky to win a tee time ballot.

The Old course isn't even the best course run by the Links Trust. If you are up this way play Kingsbarns if you want to play the best course and don't mind paying £160 for a round. The old course would be lucky to make it in to the top 5 courses within 10 miles of St Andrews. It is the biggest draw given those that have bigged it up and thus made it an experience but it's not a quality course.

Really enjoyed this years Masters, some absolutely amazing shots played especially on the last day.

I really thought KJ Choi was going to win with 7/8 holes to play but he just seemed to drop off the pace.

I guess the winner of the Masters is always going to be whoever plays the back nine best all week and especially on Sunday.

2 names spring to mind Woods & Mickelson.

It all changed after Choi had hit a perfect drive down the left side of thirteen leaving himself a relatively easy five iron to the green and just as he was ready to hit it there was a huge roar from the twelfth green behind where Mickelson had holed that longish birdie putt. Choi had to back off the shot and set up again only to pull it into the back bunker.

The worst thing is that Choi was trading at 2.8 before the second shot and I had a monkey ready to be matched @ 2 which had he hit that green would have been a formality  ;reallyamsorry;

Considering how Woods hit it yesterday, including a three-putt from five feet I have no idea how he shot -6 for the last twelve holes.

Mickelson played great and was a deserved winner in what was a wonderful tournament.
