Title: UKIPT Coventry - An opportunity wasted
Post by: duncthehat on April 08, 2010, 10:43:01 AM
A bit of a gripe at the ricoh coventry.

Although my nearest casino (still a 30 minute drive), I virtually go past its door on my way up to the Mecca that is DTD

Went up last night to play the 50 satelitte having phoned up to check that

a.  it was on
b. it was dealer dealt.

Got there paid my money checked with Kieran? if it was dealer dealt.  He had just started his shift but said i think so.

Well suprise suprise it was self deal!!!   Many thanks to those players that dealt.

I am and always have been an advocate that tournaments of a certain price or offering a certain prize (as in this case seats to a poker stars sponsored event) should be dealer dealt.  Yes it is only a 50 quid tourney but so what.  Here is an opportunity for a casino to show how efficient they are.

The casino knows it is getting players through its doors who normally play elsewhere and has a brilliant opportunity to show those new faces what they have to offer.  Well Coventry you failed big time.

Wimbledon qualifiers at Roehampton without umpires?
FA Cup qualifying rounds without referees?
"The newest and best UK poker tour" ? - rubbish.

Added to the fact that the cardroom manager and staff couldnt be arsed to update the boards with runners and average chip stacks etc, and that most of the time when a player was out and the player dealing would shout player down he waas shouting to no-one as the desk area was empty.    Add some interesting rulings by the td fortunately in hands I wasnt involved in,  Coventry G Casino despite trying to offer "The Vegas" experience havent persuaded me to knock an hour off my journey time and play poker there rather than DTD.

An opportunity lost.

Deffo full for 2moro.

I rang up to buy in and was told only places for today before 4pm. rushed down then found out you could buy in until 5.

From my pretty short time in the comp, sigh, there are so many little things that just remind me why i hardly play anywhere other than DTD. Some of the dealers are obviously pretty unexperienced or just not very good, letting people take their own change from other peoples blinds, not picking up on raises etc etc. Also 10 handed squashed up tables tilt me :(

Anyway, Good luck to everybody still in / playing 2moro.

Oh, and also just wondered what u all think about this.

I turn up towards the end of level 2 and buy in (as a late reg, not somebody who is just late) and am given a seat card. Get to my seat and theres another persons name and player card there with the stack that has been sitting there since the start.

I ask if i get a fresh stack and am told i have to use this guy who is not turning up!? how can that be right? what if my table has been 3 handed and hes been through the blinds 20 times before i get there. Somebody asks what would have happened if i bought in and there were non of these 'un used stacks'

Apparently they have a way to work out how many chips you start with.  Course you do.

Dont know whats wrong with just taking a big and small blind from each level.... surely the only fair way to do it!?!?

FWIW I lost 625 chips instead of 225.

I don't think that can be right at all.  I haven't seen it happen before anyway.

What happens if that fella shows up 10 minutes after you, does he end up with a fresh stack?  And presumably they are only doing it as he hasn't showed for 2 hours.  They wouldn't have done it if it was just half an hour, would they?

Or say the latecomer was Hellmuth, bet they wouldnt pass his stack over.  Just screams of an inconsistent/bad ruling.

LeKnave and George2Loose both finished the day on 60k+ putting them top 10 or thereabouts. Mike Lacey is second in chips at end of day 1a on a toasty 110k.

Had a very nice first table, and got involved in a few hands with David LaRonde, eventually busting him, chipped up through levels 5 and 6 and peaked at 71k, then bled away 14k after the table broke in level 8 and got moved to a table sitting next to Nigdawg with Mickey Wernick also in attendance.

Was happy to get throught the day with an above average chipstack, looking forward to coming back on Saturday with 60BBs and a new seat draw.

Good luck to all the other remaining blondes in the field.

Ben.

No, confusingly.  I was sitting the other side of Chris (Ben Sweetman 56,700)

Ben Dobson could have had finished the night on around 120k if he'd won a big pot with his slow played Kh Kd against Ac 3c on Jc 2c 7h board

Hi Mitch

I actually don't think this is an awful ruling (sorry). What should have happened as a late reg at that stage is that you should have been an alternate and only been able to enter when someone was knocked out (with as you say a bb and sb for each level passed removed from your stack). However, as played, I think it's right to pay bb and sb from the stack at the table however long the game has been running for te other players at the table. Whether you should have been allowed to take that stack over is another question entirely.

Fwiw I'm playing this afternoon, but going straight from work, although  only losing 625 for two hours and still remaining with a 14k+ stack and blinds still low at 4pm, I'm tempted to go home and get some rest in first.

Also, whoever it was that said it was sold out at 4pm yesterday has been wrongly advised too as I went along at 7.30 and paid in directly at the cash desk.

Good luck to all still in from yesterday and those of you playing today.

Thought I recognised your face, yeah that was a good passive table man!! cant believe the guy who 3-bet you with JJ had to tank before calling your 4-bet AI, I'd have snapped your hand off!!

Set over set against the freeroll qualifier was pretty sick too, I didnt see your exit, but I assume you reshipped against the guy on my right and lost the race, gg.

Tighty you forgot to put me down and my bowl of 19,700 :) might of been cos I put my name down as James Sean Williams to avoid confusing me incase the other James Williams turns up!

Me and bramm both had a bad last level to the night managing to half our stacks. Had George on my table for a bit he played nice and aggressive think I should of prob stuck it in his eye one hand but he seemed to be picking on one player in particular for the remaining level of the night.

GL to all blondes playing today!

What if the guy who's stack it was turns up 3 hours later after late reg has finished? Do they just give him a fresh stack (minus whatever they work out) and sit him down in a random seat somewhere?

A late reg is different to an alternate. If the comp offers late registration to a comp for say the first 3 levels, they would usually leave seat 9 free on all tables for example and fill them with people coming late, with fresh stacks. Once reg is closed they just rebalance all the tables if their are a lot of tables 8 handed etc.

An alternate is if the comp is full, and the only way you will get a seat is if one comes up before the end of level 3 or whatever.

Think the ruling is pretty gay because surely their werent too many ppl who were just not going to turn up to allow late reg's to just take over their stack.

Pretty tilting about ppl being able to buy in today aswell, I was clearly told yesterday that it was full and had to race to get their in time for 1A.

I bought in to this event but something came up and I had to unregister. I rang up a few days ago and they said they were busy but to ring back in 30 mins, which I did, at which point they said they were busy and to ring back in 30 mins. This happened twice.

Eventually I got hold of someone who said I could unregister and they would send a cheque on Thursday if I left my address.

After reading this thread, I was a bit concerned that my chips would be on the table and I wouldn't be receiving a cheque, so I rang up today and spoke to a different lady who says it's not possible to send cheques. Would have been nice if they told me.

I then asked for it be sent to the Vic instead. Hopefully it turns up and I don't have to chase it.

I got the feeling that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, but they're a new addition to the circuit, so I'm gonna give them a chance and will likely play the GUKPT festival.

There was definitely an Adam Goulding on the seat draw Snoops, I know because I noted your name down as a 'notable to follow' and then when I went to your table I obviously saw it wasn't you in your assigned seat.

Look out for DIMITRIOS ERMOGENOUS. He's the guy who knocked MC out.

EP raise, James 3 bets from cut off, I 4 bet from the button for about 1/3 of my stack (similar stack to James), Dimitrios flats from the SB, James 5 bet ships.

I lay down my jacks and Dimitrios calls with his AQ.

James' KK can't hold.

I don't often moan about other people's plays but this was really bad. I was gutted for James to go out to such horrible poker.

Yeah man. Player specific. James lays down QQ and possibly AK there. When he ships he's face up KK or AA in my opinion.

Wow Dan and Dave 1 and 2. GL to both.

Pretty sick about bubbling had a very tough seat with Jake, Dan and Michael Lacey all huge stacks to my left so really had to grind it out. Wish I'd just stuck it in Cody's eye now lol

U had 70k with 46 left so was comfortable. Made a pretty bad call with AJ to a shorty's re ship and he obv had AK

Then shoved A10 next hand and ran into Queens.

Enjoyed the tourney tho- just with I hadn't been on the table of death

eat 1, Gilles Augustus, 22, Belgium, PokerStars Player
Chips - 677,000

Augustus was the man responsible for setting the Final Table when he eliminated Joe Lucas at just after 3am on Day 2. His biggest online win is $3,700. He has certainly shown us that he's not afraid to make big calls and he starts the Final Table third in chips.

Seat 2, Chris Brice, 31, United Kingdom
Chips - 343,000

Brice lists his occupation as nuclear medicine so he is obviously an intelligent man and his poker style reflects this. When involved in the action, he has been very methodical and seems to have steadily accumulated chips rather than won any big coups or set up hands. His biggest live cash to date was £16,500 when he finished third in a £500 tournament in October 2009.

Seat 3, Ben Crellin, 19, United Kingdom, PokerStars Qualifier
Chips - 126,000

Ben is the youngest competitor at our Final Table. When not playing poker he's busy studying at Durham University, so he will have quite a tale to tell - not to mention less student debt to pay off - when he returns from the Easter break. He comes into the Final Table eighth in chips. His biggest win online is $4,300 when he finished fourth in the PokerStars $3 re-buy tournament.

Seat 4, Dave Jones, 22, United Kingdom
Chips - 823,000

Dave Jones is a poker professional who specialises in tournaments, with a biggest online win to date of $77,000. His biggest live cash to date is $23,670 which he scooped in a $1,000 tournament in November 2009. Although he was seated to the direct right of chip leader Dan Carter for the last few levels of Day 2, he comes into the Final Table second in chips. Jones mixes in the same circles as many of the top UK online players and is likely to have a cheering section on the rail at the Final Table.

Seat 5, Marius Lietuvnikas, 32, Lithuania, PokerStars Player
Chips - 332,000

Marius is making his second deep run in a UKIPT event, but he's already gone one better than the Manchester leg of the UKIPT, where he finished 11th. Lietuvnikas, a Lithuanian who resides in London, has been well stacked throughout the tournament but really vaulted into contention when he eliminated Toby Lewis in a 320,000 chip pot just before the bubble burst. His biggest cash to date is $12,000.

Seat 6, Andrew Booth, 41, United Kingdom
Chips - 148,000

Booth is a property developer from Liverpool. Having laid the foundations by cashing at this tournament, he will now have to work hard to build further as he lies ninth in the chip count. His best live score to date is £35,000 and he'll have to win this tournament to beat that total.

Seat 7, Dan Carter, 22, United Kingdom
Chips - 1,411,000

Dan Carter is a professional poker player from Cheltenham who has been playing for a living since the age of 18 and is the chip leader heading into the Final Table. Carter has just over $275,000 in live tournament earnings. He's no slouch online either, having chopped the PokerStars Sunday Million (with a then guarantee of $500,000) for $95,976 in January 2006. Carter has variously specialised in cash games, Sit and Gos, heads up cash and tournaments in his poker career to date. He is an avid golfer who plays off a handicap of seven and in fact had to cancel a round he was due to play this morning due to the late finishing of Day 2.

Seat 8, Paul Rigg, 46, United Kingdom
Chips - 593,000

Rigg is a professional poker player and he has won just shy of $120,000 in live tournaments, with his biggest single cash being £21,000. He has done well to recover from running Queens into Dave Jones' pocket Kings halfway through the day and he comes into the Final Table fourth in chips, well-placed to take his deep run even deeper.

Seat 9, Ben Dobson, 21, United Kingdom, PokerStars Qualifier
Chips - 547,000

Ben Dobson is the second student at today's Final Table and starts play fifth in chips. He had a rollercoaster ride to get here, running his stack up and down a couple of times before settling in the middle of the pack. His biggest cash to date came when he won a $75 online tournament for $14,000. No doubt he'll be looking to parlay some of his winnings from this event into the next leg of the UKIPT, which takes place in his hometown of Nottingham on 12-17 May.

Seat 10, Joe Grech, 56, United Kingdom
Chips - 418,000

Grech is the oldest player at today's Final Table but with age comes vast amounts of experience. Joe has over $1,200,000 in lifetime career earnings and his first recorded cash came in 2003 when chip leader Dan Carter wasn't even old enough to drive, let alone enter a casino. Remarkably consistent Grech has recorded total cashes of over $100,000 every year since 2004 and his biggest single cash was for $350,000 back in 2005.

The final table payouts are:

1: £46,000
2: £29,400
3: £16,100
4: £12,700
5: £10,200
6: £8,200
7: £6,600
8: £5,000
9: £3,500
10: £2,500

Dan played really well yesterday and if he keeps that up he will cruise this barring any bad beats. It was a very interesting experience in my first decent live tournament for about a year. For the first day and a half it just seemed like nothing had changed and I found it very comfortable and easy to build a stack once I got going.

That all changed when I moved to the table of death sat with Dan to my left and Jake & George to my right all with decent stacks. I have to admit my rustiness showed pretty bad and I was owned all day by Dan. I think I was even with Jake until I reraised him light from the sb and he turns up with Kings. Dan spotted something that I would normally have seen myself in that position when I am playing a bit more regularly and if I dont lose that pot I am probably not even in the pot in which I bust a short while later.

Coventry is a not my favourite town to be in but the casino is a great venue for poker.

Good luck to Dan and Joe today.

Thanks for any support and anyone I played with this weekend. Fantastic experience and AMAZING casino, seriously, better than any casino in England without a shadow of a doubt.

Had fun playing with Dave Jones and nice to see he isn't just an MTT nit but has many different gears.

P.S HE SNORES AFTER CLAIMING NOT TO SNORE.

Congrats to Dan and Jones, good to see you two make the good end of the money.

Really enjoyed myself over the weekend, and was great to play short handed on the "death" table with 14/15 players left

See you all in May in Nottingham.

Congrats to Dave, didnt realise who you were at the time but shared his table for most of day 2 and he really took control of a weak table and used his stack well around the bubble to amass his stack pretty effortlessly. wpwpwp ul in not tid
