Title: What do you miss?
Post by: Dingdell on April 18, 2010, 11:29:20 AM
Conversation last night about the volcanic ash and flight problem lead us to the past and how we used ships and trains to get around and how simple life seemed to be before. From that we started reminiscing about what we love from when we were younger which we have moved on from.

Mine were (and I have no idea why!) the orange plastic tea caddy on my Grandmas kitchen wall which with a push of a button dispensed a teaspoon of loose tea. She got it from the Ideal Home exhibition and for years it was the proud point of discussion and if we were good we were allowed to push the button and get the tea. But woe betide anyone who leaned against it by mistake as it would all fall on the floor.

Secondly was the soap with a magnet in it - so unhygenic - but I loved the fact that it was soap hanging in the air!

Anyone else?

If you just put wet soap down on the sink after using it, the soap goes all mushy because it doesn't dry out - just sits in a little puddle of water. The magnet means it hangs in the air and dries out properly.

When I was young we never had real coffee and we had what I think was a coffee essence it was a thin bottle with liquid coffee (I forget what it was called) but I loved it and ever since I was a child I only drink coffee and very rarely drink tea.

The worst thing that I remember was the smog, due to everyone having coal fires.  Sometimes the smog was so bad you could hardly see a foot in front of you and many people got lost on their way home.  When you got in your face was black with soot. I would hate to go back to those days.

I was actually having a conversation around this the other day, these days you can so quickly get pornography of just about any persuasion in about 25 seconds that it does make me miss a time when it would be novelty and exciting if there was a naked lady on TV, even just a nipple or a bit of side boob. Kids these days will never know the joys of finding porn in the woods, and I pity them for that.

Oh and Highland Toffee bars.

Ha so true, it was much more fun back in the day looking at the film guide in the radio times trying to find the comment scenes of nudity. I must have watched so many awful films when I was 12/13 waiting for the odd flash of flesh.

Oh and Irn Bru bars.

Access to porn has made people way more perverted imo. Apparently its the reason for many marriage split ups as well. Guy uses lots of porn>he's not horny>less sex with wife>she feels unwanted/unloved>couple split up. Sad but true :(

I miss no mobile phones. When you finished work for the day you finished work. You could go and enjoy a round of golf or have a meal in a restaurant and no fecker knew where you were or how to contact you. These days you are expected to be contactable 24/7 if you hold any position of responsibility and that's a massive life change which employers don't actually pay for.

actually hovering or stuck to a metal plate on the wall or something?

Magnet soap was stuck to a metal plate, yes. For actual hovering you needed jetpack soap, which you also can't get any more since it fell foul of health and safety legislation.

I have a lot of unhappy childhood memories so don't really miss a lot,  but  things that I often reminisce about are the warm summers spent walking / playing in the fields, going to the brook with a bucket to catch tiddlers. Hanging my jam jar on the end of a piece of string wrapped tightly around the rim over the little bridge as we called it to catch before mentioned tiddlers. Then I moved on to a cane with a bent safety pin dangling from cotton on.

When you switch some phones off does the phone send a signal to the cell tower that it is being switched off?

I miss the slates we used in primary school. Mine had a wooden border and was varnished lovely

The little bottles of orange we got at playtime.

The wax crayons we could eat.

The inkwells in the school desk you could make ink pellets and flick them at people,

Spangles, sherbert flying saucers, 4 blackjacks a penny( Old Penny )

and the smell of coal tar soap.

There were only 2 soap bars, the red hard soap and brillo pads, ouch they did scratch your face

Washing powder was Lux flakes, that was just grated soap, lol

I remember my mum getting excited by our first power mangle. It stood by the copper and she just squashed and rolled the water out of the washing, very modern

Much later we had a twin tub , v posh.

I remember buying 3 gallons of petrol for a pound.....Really miss that.

I had a Vespa 125 scooter, now that was great

Good thread this,  nice one Dewi

I loved the smell of that red soap, we used to call it carbolic soap.  It also reminds me of the very cold winters we had, much colder than this year, it was so cold I suffered with chilblains and my mum used to melt the carbolic soap and spread it on a bandage and wrap my hands and feet in it, it was so soothing.
