Just came up in conversation with me and a couple friends, do professional grinders claim dole money too? No idea about the dole, but guessing it's £80 a week ish. That's like 2.5k pays for expenses or something I guess? Anyway I got a prop on it so answers please :)

it isn't dole money tho is it? it's job seeker's allowance i think. which means you have to be seeking employment.....which we aren't.

i had it for like a month after i left college, n i just thought it was wrong recieving money for summit i wasnt doing. However, the free dental care etc would be nice.

Also, the centre i went to was full of the west end of newcastle's finest, wasnt the nice place to be!!

I claimed dole all last yr when I was grinding. The problem I found was I didn't apply for the full amount so I got about £40 per week, that's cos I had so much more money in my bank and savings than anyone else.

It's also a bit of a shitter having to go into the job centre every two weeks and tell them what a terrible time you've had looking for a job, when all you really want to be doing is firing up some SNGs, have a subway and listening to Edith Bowman on Radio 1.

I did for about a month when I first stopped working in 2004. Other than that 1 month, between 2005-2009 I never claimed anything.

I only did it for that month so I could get some dental work done, I couldn't even handle having to go into the centre so just jogged it on straight away.

My hourly is more than the time it takes to collect the JSA

No never have, I think morally it is pretty wrong if you are calling yourself a poker pro. If you need to supplement your poker income with dole money, get a job you aren't making enough.

Also the fact they make you get up and get out of the house at some point during the day is a bit like too much effort for my liking.

And the worst bit is they might actually find you a job...

I always thought it was an unwritten rule that poker pros didn't claim benefits...

I've never been a poker pro but i didn't claim benefits in the months between uni and getting a job and if I was unemployed in the future I sure as hell wouldn't ever claim benefits.

Obviously some cases are legitimate but there are far too many arseholes in this country claiming benefits unnecessarily and there ever just as many who kid themselves into thinking they're 'owed' or deserving when they aren't

If somebody chooses to reject the outside world and stay in their bedroom playing poker all day why should the state pay for their Mars bars, Dominoes pizzas and cans of Diet Coke? I don't know how people can claim to be a professional anything if they're signing on. And I don't know what % the DSS gets from staking all these grinders but I think 70-30 would be reasonable.

I think its poor form to claim, but each to their own.

Is this different to people losing their dole money playing poker?

Playing full time and claiming dole is a pretty scummy thing to do imo. If the £80/week makes a significant difference to your income, you aren't making enough money to be playing poker full time

I didn't work for 4 months between leaving the Navy and starting work again and never signed on then. I only did after I stopped working in 2004 b/c I didn't have a dentist and thought I would get one quick that way. As it happens I just joined the same one as my parents in a private practice b/c it was more hassle than it was worth. I certainly wasn't doing it for the £40 or w/e it was back then lol

I'm pretty sure there is plenty we all know on here, and in the poker world we know doing it. They should just get a job instead of being degens if they can't cut it to make enough money to live on............
