Without knowing anything about it, I can make an educated guess that you don't actually pay a monthly subscription because you don't get the internet when you want it. It's only Wi-Fi

So you will only be able to access the internet in hotspot areas, am I right?

One of our clients prints a trade journal for mobile phone retailers, they had a review of ipads comparing them to netbooks - the gist was ipads are easier to surf the internet on and read ebooks on; everything else was either the same or worse

Get an ipad by all means - it does some nifty stuff.

But it's not a laptop replacement.

Depends what you use your laptop for really.

Yes, if you use it to do your ironing then the ipad will be a perfect replacement.

This, the sort of person who will be able to own/use an ipad is someone who already has a desktop and laptop imo. It's very clever and a delight to use but really what's the point! My brother and his wife both have one and they are awesome for surfing the net and reading books etc but really what's the point?!?! I don't think i'd have anything to use one for.

As long as you don't use any sites that require Flash.

For some things, such as watching videos, browsing ebay and Amazon, checking out Facebook and reading ebooks then it looks like a fantastic tool (although over-priced and I'm sure there will be better alternatives soon).  But it's not a replacement for a laptop - unless that's all you do on your laptop.

I don't think they'd be better for reading books as I prefer, er, well actual books

I think if you're minted then it's a nice toy to add to your other gadgets but it doesn't really have any USP, it doesn't do anything that something else doesn't already do and the only thing that it does better than them is web browsing (as long as you avoid flash)

yeah exactly, I thought it was just me. I read on my screen all day long but never more than a few lines at a time, if I wanted to read a few pages of text i'd want to print it out because I hate reading off screens.

I meant as a replacement to a laptop to read an ebook.  I think they'd have the edge there.

I prefer books myself too - but the capability to have several hundred books on an ipad (and the ability to download others when you want) might be useful if you're travelling, on holiday, etc., as it would reduce the bulk.

Concentrating on a screen for several hours as hard as reading small text can't be good for your eyes

I spend 12+ everyday reading small text on computer screens.  It's probably not the best idea, but my eyes are fine.

You can also adjust the font size on a laptop/ipad, so in a way it's better for you than a printed book - DUCY?

Yes ipad >>>>>>>> laptop for reading an ebook but
Because of what Sack it off suggested ebooks >>>>>> ipad for reading books,

It does save a bit of space only having the ipad, but the actual market that the ipad benefits is tiny - the rest of the demand is just for the people liking all the pretty shiny appleyness of it all

NB it's not the font size that's the problem it's the luminosity, and you really should look into the regulations concerning safe use of VDU's Kin

I think I've heard this argument before.

I think it went something like, but my grandfather smoked every day and it never did him any harm

I have a contrast button.  Works excellently.

Probably did though, didn't it?

I doubt using a computer for 12 hours+ a day will give me lung cancer - not matter what the daily mail says.

Yes, and for that reason, I'm out. Speaking as someone who writes software, I hate the whole Jobsian cult with a vengeance. Yes, it's pretty, yes, the UI is very impressive, but even Microsoft is open and fair next to the Apple business model.

A few months on and the missus is getting increasingly frustrated with the iPAD, entirely due to the fact it is really limited with web browsing. Google maps, amazon, ebay, and several forums are all sub par or off limits on the iPAD.

Its pretty tho

Google maps is the built in "Maps" app and there are apps for both amazon and ebay which are fine.

The Ebay app, and the Amazon app, both do not show the full range of listings for the same search in a normal web browser.

I really am stuck as to what to do now, a mate of mine has the Galaxy 10.1 and thinks it's the absolute nuts. I talk to T8 and he says that the iPad is incred. I don't really play a great deal of poker when I go away anymore so really just need it for emails, surfing the web and watching shows I've downloaded   bought from itunes.

I will probably wait a while anyway and get the iPad3 when that is released if it's the best option. If the Samsung is then I'll probably get it sooner as I don't think they're doing anything drastic soon to their product as fas I have seen online.

Is it really a case of flipadelphia with each having it's own better points or is one discernibly better than the other overall?

It didn't apply in the UK (plus some other countries) and last I heard the ban was suspended anyway whilst they checked whether it was appropriate.

Long term is cheaper than getting her portable DVD player for the car, laptop for YouTube (kids shows), amazing animated and normal kids books, numerous learning and teaching apps for her to develop on and finally games like peppa pig and Micky mouse. Especially if it's jail broke as kids stuff can rattle up in costs.
