In a live comp recently i was on the button and i made a bluff at the pot on the river with 6 high , one guy passed and the remaining player thought and eventually said call. I instantly said "its yours" and the guy said "thanks " and tossed his hand over the line face down.

I asked the dealer if his hand was dead and he proceeded to turn his cards over and asked if i could beat it?

Am i right in that he has technically mucked and if i turn my 6 high over i could make a claim for the pot?I chose not to as the guy was a live beginner.Was the dealer wrong to turn the guys cards over?

Saying 'its yours' then trying to claim the pot off a guy for tossing his cards in is a c**ts trick IMO!

The nature of your question seemed to suggest that you were wanting to claim the pot if his hand was classed as dead, which seems like really bad form.

The question is , if at showdown a guy inadvertently throws his hand face down over the line is his hand permanently dead?

As soon as i said " its yours " he instantly threw his cards in face down.I did not seek to win the win , i was only asking for clarification.

I am well aware that winning a pot in this manner is unsportsmanlike , i am just looking for the correct ruling.

As soon as you have said its yours, you are surrendering the pot so he can muck his hand

no he can't unless you're playing somewhere with strange rules. if he now mucks then op wins the pot, throwing his hand face down on the table however does not constitute mucking

'it's yours' has no bearing on the winner of a pot

I was surrendering my hand but doesn't he need to show his hand to take down the pot ? And because he mucked his hand doesn't it mean that however shows their hand can take the pot down?

Surely a pot cannot be awarded to a person if no cards are shown?

1. I would just forget the technicality argument. You gave the guy the pot, you can't take it back afterwards. I mean it's like giving your Mum a tin of Quality Street and then taking back all the purples and greens when she's left the room. Leaving your mum with just them strawberry ones is pretty low.

2. The cards aren't mucked if they cross some line on a table

I don't understand, the strawberry ones are the best ones, but the purples and greens are tez. You're doing her a favour.

Anyway to answer the question, technically the hand is dead when the cards touch the muck (the pile of cards that have been folded), not go over the line. So, no his hand is still live. This is all subject to house rules of course. And to be honest, if you called the floor, I'd be really surprised if they didn't make a "best interest of the game ruling", and push the pot to your opponent anyway.

What I do (and what hopefully your opponent has now learned to do) is to hold onto my cards until I can see the pot being pushed my way at all times.

Cards do generally need to be shown to win a pot. However, his hand obv isn't dead. It may be ruled dead if it touched the muck but even then I'd be making a best interest ruling if possible rather than push a pot to someone angle shooting.

I do remember playing the UKIPT tho where they had a couple of strange rules. You could win a pot only showing one card (wtf?) and i think you could win without showing any if the other player conceeds. Was a strange one.

Did the Quality Street people make a strawberry "Big One"? No they did not. They made a purple "Big One" and a green "Big One". Hence greens and purples are the best based on all available statistical data. Thread has gotten a bit ridic. However, I do like the idea of flowers as a present idea for OP's mum. A silver picture frame would be nice as well. OP can put a photo of himself in it claiming a pot with 6 high and she can look at it wistfully whilst eating the remaining strawberry's.

you might need to show a hand after its been declared if someone things cheating is going on and ask for hands to be shown

Your cards are also probably a little bit cheaper than everyone elses, and they actually disintergrated when they hit the muck.
