Title: Fancy Watches
Post by: sovietsong on July 11, 2010, 11:48:09 AM
Good Morning all,

As you can tell from my profile pic I am into fine watches, and whilst the casio is one of the best watches I have ever had, working in a professional environment I am not 100% comfortable wearing this beauty at work.  Clients see it and think that I'm a 'flash bastard' and therefore I have stopped wearing it (gg £14.99).

So looking for a little advice on getting a nice watch at a reasonable price, i am looking to spend between £150 and £250 so not expecting the world, I find myself looking at websites and being confused.

Any help much appreciated!

Just don't assume high quality they never are. If they last a year you have done ok out of it and they will lose/gain time etc. I have a nice real TAG I bought 15 years ago. The problem is fashions change and I ain't spending a couple of k each time they do. Now I just buy a few fakes every couple of years and they see me through.

i bought a few from here a few years back firstly customs stopped it entering the country no prob the sent another one when i rang them to say thet one hadnt turned up they sent another.,.,that day one arrived.,.,next day the other arrived.,.,and about a week later the last one arrived.,lol i had 3 watches for the price of one.,.,.,not bad quality.,.,
if you could stretch to £500 i would recomend a second hand omega seamaster off ebay.,.,my wife and son bought mine 10 years back cost if i rem about £1,000 but if i were to sell it which im not.,.,i would get around £500 for it.,.,so pretty good investment..,what i mean is you wont loose too much money and its a great watch i never take it off.,.,.
the fake ones i bought were called corum admirals cup.,., sponsors of the wsop i still have one left gave the others away.,.,.,http://www.ukreplicawatches.com/

They are ok when new but scratch up dead easy, water knackers them and they break quite easily. if they last a year you have done well ok out of it.

90% of the 'designer' brands are made by fossil. Fossil' watches can be picked up in the US for $40-$50 which tells you the. true value of them..

I love my raymond weil parsifal, which I have had for nearly 15 years.

(this is a newer version with bigger numerals which I dont like at all). The watch is incredibly thin.

i am secretly after one of these, which must be about the cheapest watch that Rolex make :

Best watch ever omega seamaster .,.,... Automatic
keeps great time and face is saphire something quite
unscratchable
if I changed the blue dial on mine costs £60 it would look brand new
it's about 10 years old and tough as  rough.,.,

TAG is a swiss watch maker that has been around for about 150 years...proper watches...

I remember for a while back in the late 80s they seemed to be selling a lot of  'fashion'. style watches which were quite plasticky and bright colors, but they have gone back to more traditionall styles in recent years.

Sofa, - I love Omega watches. I have a mate who has a Omega seamaster and the weight of the thing  is just unbelievable....

the only 'luxury' brand i dont like is breitling....apparanty a favourite of premiership footballers, which is all you really need to know...

Woodsey would you be willing to pick me up a watch when you go in August. After something similar to Sov - silver and simpleish, either breitling or TAG etc
Would happily ship you cash before you go and could pick it up from DTD one weekend when you get back.
Something like this

Yeah no probs. I'm going on 24th Aug just remind me before then. It would probably also best if you give me 3 models you like so there is a choice in case I can't find the exact one you want. I'd be tempted to get a couple of I were you as I've had ones that have gone knackered within a couple of months, but for £20-30 what do you expect hey........

so a few years on & i've got a decent job & stopped losing all my money at poker so am going to get this omega (thin/brag etc).  Anybody used swisswatchesdirect.com?

They are about 500 cheaper than in high street jewellers.

any advice/congratulations on being able to afford a fancy watch on my credit card?

No idea about pricematching, but doesn't seem inconceivable that they'd be willing to do that.

Decent enough reviews there, which I presume is a reputable review site.

Nice watch, gl with the purchase.

iconic are reputable

http://www.iconicwatches.co.uk/our-brands/all-brands/omega/seamaster-41.html

and dom hackett has a stellar rep on watch forums as being honest and reliable, if you call him he will source discounted new watches for you.

http://www.hackettwatches.com/

with the current favourable exchange rate these guys are bringing in watches from europe, just check that you will 100% be covered under manufacturers warranty, it varies slightly between different brands

Do people still wear watches??

Some of the ones that spend most of their time in dry, clean environments and are happy to fish their mobile phones from their pocket when they are away from their computer screen and want to know the time don't.

Most jewellers will knock money off for the stuff they sell. Recently bought my wife a decent watch from a Main Street jeweller and got almost 20% off the ticket price. This was latest stock and not in any sales etc.

I haven't worn a watch in 15 years. Mobile phones have saved me a fortune as I always managed to break my watches.
lol attempt at a dig though Red. my phone covered in paint and scratches, mostly acquired whilst renovating houses

It wasn't a dig Gov, honest.

Well, maybe it was a bit, I just thought it was kinda justified after your comment when sovietsong is obviously excited about buying a new watch.

No offence intended though Mr V. It's just the usual forum bollocks.

Ernest Jones have done it for £2.3k so £135 more than online but I'm much more comfortable buying from a retailer.

Great thread on 2+2 in EDF section about watches. It is huge though and you may not have time to read it all.

It will either change the current view you have of watches or you were never really that into/interested in fancy watches.

Who's view will it change?

Everyone who has posted in this thread i would imagine.

Ultimately it does depend what you are looking for in a watch combined with what you perceive to be a "fancy watch"

A Bolton lad called Roger Smith makes fancy watches. Do they like him on 2+2?

Also fwiw i am not saying anything is wrong if someone wants to pay £200 for a fossil group watch in a Hugo boss case. That is a decision for them.

Just pointing out watch taste/ appreciation is usually changing all the time once you get started.

just seen this thread - i love watches and tend to buy them at auction - occasionally direct from a jewler i know who gives me a extremely good discount. have about 40 in the collection at the moment.

unfortunately - i only wear watches once in a while and my current fav is a 1940's allaine automatic - though its only got an hour hand - have yet to get round to fixing the minute and second hand -

have bought some crackers over the years for like £10/20 - in fact have made more money buying and selling the odd watch than i have made money at poker,

little tip - if you buy an expensive watch direct from a jewler - ie £3k upwards - look for at least a 25% discount -
