Title: Football First Post by: tikay on June 06, 2005, 06:36:02 PM I picked up a newspaper today entitled "Football First", or to give it it's full title, "Football First, Sport First & Poker First", & it was the last bit that caught my eye.
To say I was shocked was an understatement - the Poker First section was 16 (yup, SIXTEEN) pages...... Anyone else seen it? Awesome! Title: Re: Football First Post by: BlueWolf on June 06, 2005, 07:00:24 PM where you pick that up from? i know a few mags/papers are cover poker now but 16 pages??????
Title: Re: Football First Post by: tikay on June 06, 2005, 07:17:10 PM Exactly my thoughts. Picked it up at my local Co-Op.
SIXTEEN PAGES!!! Looked like a first edition to me (the Poker section) with a lot of introductory poker tips, but also some cracking feature articles, a huge 2 page interview jobbie with Barry Hearn, Pro's Tips - from The Camel no less - (steal, steal, then steal some more....), Top Tips, Ask The Pro, Results, a preview of the World Series......And that's apart from the football coverage, which is even bigger The Poker Boom is well & truly underway. I shudder to think what may happen if a Brit wins a bracelet...... Title: Re: Football First Post by: freak on June 09, 2005, 12:25:51 PM got a call from the editor yesterday they are trying to get as much as poss into this magazine and the photographer and reporter that came for the 100 game in festival were from this mag ( see pic of Sharon in the middle)
They will be doing a big editorial for the august festival and we will be getting free cardroom copies as of the 19th August apparently. other than that it is 1.30 at the newsagents Craig Title: Re: Football First Post by: AlrightJack on June 09, 2005, 01:06:10 PM That was the second edition. The first edition was 20 pages long. However, it did say on the first edition '20 pages every week', so whether the 16 last week was a one off or a climbdown remains to be seen. If they're down to 12 pages this week, they're in trouble!
Title: Re: Football First Post by: tikay on June 09, 2005, 01:07:31 PM Well this is ever so slightly embarrassing for me. After I mentioned it the other day, I got a phone call from them, "Would you be interested in writing an article or two for us?"....
Anyway, bla bla bla, the deal is sort of done & I will be sending them the odd piece. Don't want you guys to get the idea that I was cunningly spamming. I mean, if I am gonna plug them, I will do it openly, as I do with Poker 425. Gives you guys the chance to take the **** out of me...... But I was genuinely shocked when I picked it up on Tuesday. SIXTEEN page poker section - who'd have thought THAT a few years ago? Life takes some stange twists & turns after retirement, eh? Title: Re: Football First Post by: tikay on June 09, 2005, 01:13:07 PM Thought you were "working" today Alright Jack.....
Thewy calls it "grazing"...a little work, a little play, repeat as necessary..... Right, I'm outa here, Gutshot bound...... Title: Re: Football First Post by: RED-DOG on June 09, 2005, 01:54:34 PM got a call from the editor yesterday they are trying to get as much as poss into this magazine and the photographer and reporter that came for the 100 game in festival were from this mag Craig Ahh so thats who they were, I saw them that night but I thought they were from the DHSS Title: Re: Football First Post by: Colchester Kev on June 09, 2005, 02:02:39 PM Ok so Tikay mentions Football first and gets a bit of work/sponsorship hmmmmmmmmmm

Had a quick flick through it earlier today - looks like it's the same paper that used to just be called Sport First. I used to buy that a couple of years ago, wasn't a bad read then. Must keep an eye out for it. Title: Re: Football First Post by: K9sixtwo on June 10, 2005, 10:04:55 AM Well done Tikay on getting another writing contract.... I think that your a little hard on yourself however saying that you dont want to appear to be cunningly spamming them ....when in fact its a two way street and there is plenty of buttering up coming the other way too...
Chris "jesus" Ferguson is described on page 31 as looking like "an obscure country and westen singer down on his luck".... He is'nt writing for the paper On page 36 a review of the Poker 425 program reveals its hosted by "Nottingham Legend Tony "Tikay" Kendall... who is now contributing .. So its official Tikay is a legend .... Im sure the writting will be entertaining......as long as we dont see those 425 shorts!!! ;D Title: Re: Football First Post by: Scottish Dave on June 10, 2005, 10:49:23 AM Ironside, you being from Glasgow too, i was wondering, can you get this paper up here, ive had a wee look in the shops but cant see it?
sounds like a good read! Title: Re: Football First Post by: lukepokerfirst on August 01, 2005, 12:02:30 PM Hi guys,
Glad to see such a positive response to the paper - it now takes up most of my time editing it so chuffed to see it is not being wasted. Poker First is now pretty much established at 20 pages a week as a pullout in the re-named Sport First, the size is largely dependent on backing from advertisers and may rise or fall periodically to adjust. There are certainly plans to make it a standalone paper, which I think would be a first for the UK, though that decision is made by the publisher in London. Any suggestions or feedback (positive or negative) is always welcome - you can email us at ff@pa.press.net. The early issues were a bit raw, but I hope it's grown into a worthwhile read. And of course big thanks to Tikay, who has been amazing in providing copy and steering us in the right direction. Title: Re: Football First Post by: tikay on August 01, 2005, 01:46:26 PM Oops, that "Lukepokerfirst" is one of my bosses, he's one of the chaps I deal with at Poker First.
Hi Luke, a BIG welcome to blonde........... [/size] Seriously, thanks for the kind words Luke. I love being associated with the paper, gives me quite a kick. And I PROMISE, one of these days, to get my copy to you BEFORE the deadline...... |
