Coren's been all over the box this year, saw her on stuff like Question Time, Have I Got News for You and of course Only Connect. In this and in articles in national newspapers she gets poker references in. Clear winner in that category for exposure in regular media and coz she's pleasant to look at and not too crazy, serves as a positive ambassador.

Obv I voted for tikay though ::)

Not sure why the negativity to poker awards, unless it just means any awards are pointless? Just like Football awards or the Oscars it is a celebration of success and for any winner of an award its normally something to be proud of. (Obv there are some stupid awards such as best bum of the year)
I have just voted for Flushy and hope he wins.
GL Flushy.

 Ben “milkybarkid” Grundy

In fairness the best cash and best tourney player categories have both online and live players in them.

I see your point about the online category and it isnt a perfect set of awards, but where does one draw the line? Should there be a best online SNG category or even a best double or nothing award?

Awards like this are never meant to be serious, I doubt any player nominated will be shitting themselves with nerves the night before or bragging about winning for years to come. These things are supposed to be a bit of fun and giving a pat on the back to players/staff/forums who have done well for the Brits this last 12 months.

Even if poker awards weren't pointless., How exactly can you choose between, say, Grundy and Ashby for cash player of the year?

Amount won?  Amount won/perhand? Most hands played? Whose haircut you like best?

It is so ridiculously subjective you might as well just ask "Which cash game player do you like the most?"

And as for Forum of the Year, that is so ridiculous I'm not even going to waste my time on it.

Not naming names but in the cash category at least half for certain and probably the majority have had a losing year in cash :)

Which is the equivalent of nominating me for live tournament success

And poker awards are definitely a waste of time. If someone has won 2m online in cash why the hell would they want a trophy

But then why does an actor give a shit about winning an oscar when he/she's getting paid 20 million a film ?

BTW I agree it's bollocks just wonder why ?

Because actors or sportsmen or whatever give some sort of pleasure/entertainment to others by doing what they do, and awards to them recognise that? Whereas poker is essentially a selfish occupation - no-one plays to entertain or enlighten others; they just play to make themselves money. Why on earth should other people want to give them an award for that? (On top of which, even if they do want to give them an award, how can they possibly make any sort of judgment as to whom it should go to?)

(I've no interest in awards for other stuff either, but poker awards are clearly even more ridiculous).

So poker players aren't entertaining to watch.  ::) As to subjectivity, no difference with the Oscars etc. Think some of you have been taking too many grumpy pills.

No it isn't.

There are hundreds of different acting awards, your argument would mean that all of them are worthwhile.

But some awards are wanted and others nobody cares about - it's all down to whether they're respected or not.

...

Because actors or sportsmen or whatever give some sort of pleasure/entertainment to others by doing what they do, and awards to them recognise that? ...

Moskvich's supposition is that actors 'give a shit' about winning an oscar because they provide entertainment and are getting awards to recognise that.

But if that was the reason why actors cared about oscars then they would care just as much about every type of award.

The TV Quick Awards are to recognise that the actors have given some sort of pleasure/entertainment to others - but it would be hard to argue that actors care as much about that as they would about an oscar.

The gist of Moskvichs post is true, but his reason is only a relatively unimportant part of the whole picture - it's a long way from being the defining reason why actors care about awards (and care about some more than others).

QED
Therefore, it's an ok post, not a good one ;D

Judging by the fact you can buy tickets to this "prestigious" event for a hundred quid a go they are clearly not pointless.  For the organisers at least.  You do seem to get entry into  fifty quid freezout though so that should persuade Ivey and Durrr to attend.

It would be really really funny if those nominated had to pay for their tickets to the event.

I wonder which nominated players would still go?

Its not that unusual to be honest.
I have attend awards events where I have been nominated and have booked tables at a cost. Obviously this is the same position for winners and losers. A lot depends on how much sponsorship they have for the event as to whether they need to charge or not.
I am not trying to defend each individual award as there are some ommisions, but this is down to opinions on individuals and the Cash player is a difficult one to judge.
But if you think of everything that Tikay has done for poker, or the year Flushy has had surely they deserve to win awards?

Most awards events are money spinners for the organisers, which is the sole reason they exist.

I'm loving the fact that a league I used to sponsor "Live Poker League" has been nominated for "Best Poker League"  despite shutting down in early 2009 (it was taken over by Redtooth Poker league, but a lot of the venues ended up defecting to Bristol Poker League).

Still, hopefully as a nominee I can attend the party and enjoy the free hospitality :)

Would be hugely funny if a non-existent league actually won the award. Maybe I should start rallying for votes?...

Id be interested to know who actually compiled the lists?

It feels to me like it wasn't anyone from actually INSIDE the poker world.

i.e Best ONLINE player

Chris “Moorman1” Moorman
Richard “Chufty” Ashby
Lawrence “Rivermanl” Houghton
Luke “__FullFlush1__” Schwartz
Ben “milkybarkid” Grundy

How was this list compiled? seems the same way as every other list and by profile, in which case seems pointless to have an award.

in the interests of joining in i voted flushy/blonde why the hell not!

I think the idea - well it is a fact - is that the whole idea is to raise awareness of the Sponsors, who are opening a new Poker Venue. The "Awards" are simply something to use as a hook, I would imagine. And the more that people discuss the Awards, whether the idea be good or bad, the happier the Sponsors will be.

So more controversial = more noise = suits them just fine.
