After his brother made it i'd pick Edoardo Molinari and i think you have to pick Harrington and then i think i'd have Rose. Means leaving Casey, Donald and Garcia amongst others. Pretty tough decision. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Karabiner on August 28, 2010, 10:54:43 PM Who would people's Ryder Cup picks be? After his brother made it i'd pick Edoardo Molinari and i think you have to pick Harrington and then i think i'd have Rose. Means leaving Casey, Donald and Garcia amongst others. Pretty tough decision. Garcia is not even in the equation for me and much as I like EdoardoM I still have him as my fifth choice. I would go for Harrington, Donald and Rose. But I think that Monty will go for Harrington, Casey and Donald. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Murph1984 on August 28, 2010, 11:12:20 PM Harrington and Rose would be certs for me personally.Harrington because he is just quality and is now probably the most mentally tough player in the game,Rose because he has had a very good year and because of his good partnership with Poulter.
And I would probably select Molinari as the 3rd choice, but that's based on the partnership with his brother obviously and not on golfing talent alone and I also have a general dislike of Casey. Casey is right on the edge of qualification and you'd have to think had he played in europe this week there's a very good chance he'd have earned himself an automatic spot, but he chose to play in America and rely on a captains pick, something which Montgomerie was VERY critical of when Poulter done the same thing a couple of years ago,so will be interesting to see what he does with that one. He might still opt for Casey just for experience though. harrington cause of his major success and is a big game player casey cause hes a sidk matchplayer rose cause i think hes just had a better season than donald so probably deserves it more. (although i wouldnt be too enraged if donald made it in, has RC experience and solid game is good in the foreballs) Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: MajorMajor on August 29, 2010, 12:00:54 AM Harrington cant drive though, i know he's one of the best scramblers but he just cant seem to put much together, so hes out of it for me.
I think you have to pick Rose, having a great year Casey is out for not trying to qualify and just going for the money in america I'd have Molinari to play with his brother And i'd probably go for Donald because of his effort at Celtic Manor earlier in the year Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Horneris on August 29, 2010, 12:56:05 AM I'd have Harrington in there in a second.
Along with probably Simon Dyson/Justin Rose and Paul Casey. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Nico29 on August 29, 2010, 11:46:29 AM Monty has already basically said pod is in. Casey is also a lock,
And for the third position i'd say it's just between rose and donald, tbh i'd put in eduardo molinari for the third spot just for trying to qualify so much more than the others. And he's pretty handy and him teaming up with his brother wld be awesome. Pretty sure colin won't pick him though. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: moonandback on August 29, 2010, 11:50:18 AM Molinari,Harrington and Rose for me but i cant see monty picking molinari tbh. i also think monty will be the worst captain ever (maybe in a tie with faldo) i saw an interview with alvaro quiros a while back and he said monty had never spoken to him! he and poulter hate each other supposedly as well imo the best captains are the guys that everyone likes/gets on with not necessarily the best players torrance woosie and gallacher spring to mind. still at least he hasnt got the same problem pavin has with woods.
by which i mean. 1. does he pick him 2. does he play him every game 3. if he is playing bad can he drop him if it goes wrong he will get slated almost whatever he decides. If i were pavin and woods keeps playing substandard i wouldnt pick him and front up and say he's not playing good enough to be on the team doubt he has the guts to do that though. gonna be interesting Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Karabiner on August 29, 2010, 12:53:52 PM I consider Langer to have been the best RC captain that I have seen.
And Hal Sutton the worst by some distance. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Horneris on August 29, 2010, 01:33:27 PM The best US captain ive ever seen is probably Shooter McGavin
Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Nico29 on August 29, 2010, 06:48:55 PM Harrington gets in no surprise really as monty has said before he'd pick him
Eduardo wins today and books his place by impressing the captain no end. Donald gets in ahead of casey/rose which i find pretty surprising tbh. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: Josedinho on August 29, 2010, 08:00:59 PM Lots of people not happy with Harrington over Rose.
I'm happy Molinari made it. I like Donald's Ryder Cup record so can see why he got in. I can't really argue with Harrington as a 3-time major winner but i've only just realised how bad his Ryder Cup record is. Nobody can be too unhappy. It only takes a few more tournaments in Europe for them to have made it. Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: buzzharvey22 on August 30, 2010, 01:40:24 AM 2bf i think there are reasons to justify the inclusion of any combo out of the 5 (eduardo casey donald rose harrington)
still reckon we have the strongest team on paper so pretty confident Title: Re: The Barclays Post by: bobby1 on August 30, 2010, 12:35:56 PM Well done Monty. Leaving out Casey and Rose will help the team in years to come because those that choose to play only in the US and chase the green over there now realise that they wont just get picked on name alone. I think it sends out that message and you can bet good money that players like Casey and Rose will be looking to play Euro tour events in the future which is good for the tour.
Donald came over and won an event and almost won another, Casey missed the Czech open last week and said he'had done all he could to qualify' without once actually trying to play events in Europe to get him in, he deserves what he got and all this nonsense about top ten in the world players missing out is irrelevant. They decided to chase the money instead of the Ryder cup place, their fault. The big question was Pod who is now totally unreliable as his swing has constantly let him down under pressure since he overhauled it and has a poor record in the Ryder Cup but he did at least try to play some qualifying events in Europe so its understandable they picked him over the other two. I do think there might have been a backstory to the picks too. Thomas Bjorn is very influential on the Euro tour committee and has been quite outspoken in the past about raising the number of events needed to play on the Euro tour to get your European tour card. I think it is around 15-16 at the mo which includes majors and world championship of golf events and he wants it to be even more because it forces the players to come back to Europe, it also encouraged players like Villegas to come over and play as he did last year and earlier this year to try and qualify for the race to Dubai finale, should he choose to play if he got in. In turn this leads to the main area of concern. Getting and retaining more sponsors for European Tour events and being able to sell these packages with the allure that more big names will play in them because playing on the European tour is an attraction not just a side tour to the players that would rather aim at the big money in the US. My gut feeling is Monty is going to have a big say on the Euro committee in years to come when he stops playing and this selection is a message to the big players that they are going to have to earn the selection and the cash by playing more in Europe instead of shunning the tour for their own benefit. So they might be picks to win a Ryder Cup in the short term but going forward it will lead to better players playing more in Europe and more cash coming into sponsorships because of it. I think that might have been important in picking players that had supported the Euro tour and tried to qualify thru them.
