Title: Macbook pro?
Post by: Woodsey on September 14, 2010, 11:56:12 PM
My mates are bugging the shit out of me to get one of these but I'm not convinced it is right for me, can someone give me some advice please........

My main uses will be-

Mainly for when I'm travelling or away with work.

Downloading/storing pics and doing some pic editing
Surfing the net
Playing poker- Which sites have software for macs?

I have an ipod too but none of the other apple gadgets.........

I can get a great, light portable lappy that fits the bill for around £600 ish, spending £1k plus seems a bit excessive, advice please?

You will never regret getting a mac unless you are an online grinder.

Imagine a world where everything works, and your computer never crashes or never gets a virus and generally feels solid in everything it does. My Macbook is 5 years old now and I still get 4.5 hours on the battery of full on grinding

Poker sites you can play on

Stars - perfect
FTP - perfect
UB - Fine
Party - Browser
Sky - Browser
Abs Poker - Fine
Micrograming - Browser and can only 1 table

I know that, that's why I'm asking. Its going to be double that by the time I have all the bits I want on it. I don't think its worth it tbh, but thought I would ask............

One advantage of MacBooks over PC laptops is they tend to hold their value a lot better because Apple don't release a low cost model with better specs 18months later.

I got a refurbed MacBook from Apple a couple of years ago and it has been great, does everything I want from a laptop and will run windows in VM too, which is handy. The touchpad is a joy to use (I want to throw most laptops out of the window after 10 seconds unless I can use a mouse).

Main differences between MacBook and Pro:
Pro has bigger screen, better specs, more connections (firewire etc) and an alu case (although I think some MacBooks have them now).

If you don't need a big screen and you aren't doing intensive image editing I imagine the non pro would suit your needs.

Ta. I will be going for the smallest (13 inch) version for portability, think the alu case is lighter too. Don't really care about the resale value as once I have it I'll keep it till it dies, which my current lappy will do soon...........

Got my lad one recently for his 2nd year at Uni (13in pro), thing of beauty with excellent screen (bright in the lightest of conditions), usability and keyboard. Make sure you get the 500gb of storage option (cant get in a shop - only online). If you know of a uni student they get upto 17% discount (+ massive discount on apple care) depending upon which one they go to? I also got the current free Ipod touch and printer offer (rebate).

In my experience PS, FT and Betfair clients work very well. Only slight issue is that Poker tracker has to run in VMWARE based XP image, but with MacPro its no problem. Enjoy and there will be no going back to PC's !!

Woodsey you'll love it. Have had a MBP for a few years now absolutely quality.

Pokering is easy and fine to use DB's with etc. Not only can you run windows (I've had 3 years of using parallels and never had a problem that I haven't caused by being dumb).

They are pretty strong/durable. I managed to have my laptop bag swing violently away from me on the tube with my last MBP and after it caught the railing full on in the middle of the bag I thought it would be in bits, just a crack in the screen ftw.   Also managed to spill a full pint of orange squash on my keyboard last week whilst grinding which was one of the biggest epic fails in history, mbp took it like a champ still working fine!

They get very hot underneath which is a real concern if you want to have it actually on your lap with any regularity (if grinding with it and you need the loo one must drape a towel over ones knees or else ones knees will burn to shit).

Everyone seems to hate on macs because of their image and price combined with a lot of people who buy them and don't need them. If you actually have lots of picture editing to do etc then it will be a brilliant machine for you and be solid as a rock whilst running.  Having said all this windoze has got better recently, the more it copies apples gui and tries to compete with linux etc the better for windoze. but I have been impressed with 7 since I got it, it's alot more stable. it's not super brilliant but it's better than all other windows versions i've used.  I only got my pcs for pokering/computer games but I still cant help but use my mac for email/msn/internet surfing/photos etc

As someone said student discount ftw.

Cheers mate the picture editing is a major attraction I have to say, I've got into photography in a big way in the last couple of years. I have to wait till next month to buy anyway after I get a work bonus so will decide then.

What about all the apps they offer. I-work/apeture/final cut etc?

I don't know enough specifically with regards to picture editing/some of those programs. I'm sure aperture is good, iphoto is good for importing/storing photos.

Go to a mac store if you can, alot of the people who work there are pretty mac/computer geeky and can give you good advice.

Macs aren't that expensive when compared against equivalent PCs, problem is people look at the cheap PCs and compare those against the Mac.

true, but they also compare the performance, reliability, and build quality of macs against cheaper lower spec PC's

If you are willing to spend what you would on a mac on a custom built PC (or laptop), you will get a very nice piece of kit for your money that will have a similar build quality.

Aperture 3 is the nuts.
