Title: Does he have a straight? Post by: kinboshi on September 20, 2010, 02:35:42 PM Interesting hand from a $1/2 cash game at the Venetian.
I've been at the table for a good few hours. Stuart Hopkin was also at the table, but I now have his chips and he's gone to find Cos as standing next to him Stu will feel as though he's up for the day. Anyway, the play at the table has been pretty poor - so I've fitted in well. Nice friendly table though, and the banter's good. One player who hasn't joined in the banter is a bloke in his mid-40s who's wearing a Full Tilt WSOP 2006 T-shirt and shades. Stu had previously commented on his bet-sizing as he liked to bet 4x the pot on the flop and raise 12xBBs pre-flop. He was obviously a pro. Anyway, back to the hand in question. I'm sitting with about $600 ($300 buy-in and I have Stu's chips now was well of course). I have Aspades 4s in the BB and decide to raise to $18 with 4 limpers behind me, including Mr WSOP 2006. Two callers, including him. The flop is a lovely Ad 4c 2h I lead out for $35 into the pot of about $60. Mr WSOP 2006 calls, the other player folds. Turn is a slightly unpleasant 3d - but I lead out again for about $80. He calls pretty quickly. The river is 6h - so doesn't really change anything. But now looking at him, I have a bad feeling about the hand. I decide to check and he bets about $100. It screams that he has the straight, but I decide I have to call as I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn over a big ace here, even though his body language and that bet on the end is telling me he has the straight. Thoughts? Do you call the river, and what do you put him on? Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: boldie on September 20, 2010, 02:40:09 PM check call is fine for me.
BTW "I'm sitting with about $600 ($300 buy-in and I have Stu's chips now was well of course). I have in the BB and decide to raise to $18 with 4 limpers behind me," you raise it up to 9x the BB from the BB with a4? Obviously Mr WSOP is a much better player than you are. ;) Also don't like the $35 bet..would like to see this nearer 40-45. 80 is fine'ish Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: EvilPie on September 20, 2010, 02:45:58 PM Check pre.
Bet more. Bet more. Check call is fine. He has A6. A4 in the BB isn't a hand to be 9x'ing with pre. Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: kinboshi on September 20, 2010, 02:56:41 PM The amounts are approximate, but close enough.
Obviously Mr WSOP is a much better player than you are. ;) So very true. Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: buzzharvey22 on September 20, 2010, 02:59:52 PM Would probably expect him to check behind the river with Ax, which i think would make up the majority of the range you could beat, he doesnt sound like the type to value bet thin at all, however, i would still expect him to value bet a set or a lower two pair, however i just cant see how these lower 2 pair hands would get to the flop turn and river.

Call he had KQ off. :D Close (but misinformed). I called and said "I've got two pair" and showed my cards. I asked him "You've got the straight, haven't you?", and he nodded and said "Yes" and tabled Ks Qs !!! The dealer then had to explain that he didn't have a straight. so you had Stus money LOLOLOLOLOLOL go back to that. rotflmfao I'm not a big fan of the raise pre but if I do I bet mores on the flops. edit and obv call riv with stu's money so we're not risking our own. Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: EvilPie on September 20, 2010, 07:04:51 PM I hope you kept 2 separate piles of chips so you could use Stu's for situations such as this.
Title: Re: Does he have a straight? Post by: DMorgan on September 21, 2010, 05:50:17 AM Villains stack size could majorly change this but assuming that he covers...
Against weak passive players that seem to be pretty common in these games, check pre is definitely the way to go. By raising here the most likely outcome is that you get a big pot when you're out of position with a hand that needs to flop pretty well to stand any heat. Flop lead should be bigger too since we're looking to get it in vs Ax hands and even the ones that aren't stacking off, they're calling the flop for sure. I'd bet something like $48. As played the 3 shouldn't really change anything especially if you keep firing. He's certainly not going to put you on any 5x hand so if he liked his ace on the flop he probably still likes it. Your betsize of 80 into 130 is fine imo. So the pot is now 290 and I think you have the best hand almost always. If you're both deep I can't see him not raising the turn with a straight. Theres really no other way he's gunna get stacks in. Definitely calling as played but I think I prefer a half pot river lead for 150. If he liked his ace on the flop and the turn he's probably not gunna fold for half pot but I think he might if you bet much bigger. His river betsize to me looks like a scared aces up with A3 being the most likely imo. A6 is definitely possible but in answer to the OP, no I don't think he has a straight here very often at all. Mr Phillip's I wrongly thought based on previous trips away, may have been able to leave a poker table. I was wrong. Me and Mr Pie have discussed going in early July for a week if you fun guys wanna get sheared? The plan we had was one WSOP event, and the rest of the time any poker played would result in you having to pay for the other persons flight upgrade to upper on the return flight.
