a guy  gets 12 gold bars , but one is fake ,they all look and appear the same appart from the fake will weigh a little more or a little less  than a real gold bar

his onley way to find the fake is to weigh the bars.he has a weighing scales with no measurements just one side will go up or down if the bars are not the same weight.........he can only use the scales three times.....

any one who has the managements ear at dtd please suggest they go for some sort of guinness book of records event....such as the furtherest card flicking record or tallest built card house,

maybe I ain't a genius after all - just typed out the method then realised we don't know if the fake is heavier or lighter than the others, and i can't make it cover all eventualities in less than 4 goes on the scale.  Gonna give it some thought and hopefully suss it within 14 more minutes to retain some pride :D

Split the 12 into half and put on scales get rid of heavier six.
split six into half put on scales get rid of heavier 3.
take 2 of 3 remaining and put on scales if they are same weight it is the other one if not one will be lighter than the other that is it.

see my last post - we can't eliminate the heavier half at first weighing.

meh I can't leave it.  question:  if we add bars to piles of bars already on the scales does that count as the same go on the scales, or a separate go?  if the former, i've sussed it.  if the latter, i'm giving up again.

Yes this...I was maybe nine seconds, but still much better than 15

ok think i got it.....u put 2 piles of 4 on the scales...and leave 4 to the side....if they weigh the same, u know the snidey bar is in the pile on the side....

If you know the fake is lighter, then it's simple enough. But as it can be lighter or heavier I'm struggling to see how it can be done.

OK, one side is heavier. Now what? You know the fake is amongst the 8.

that's how i was doing it, but unless the first two piles are balanced I can't do it in 3 moves.

take 2 from the lighter side and one from the heavier side. weigh against 3 coins, 1 from each of your original sets of 4

bars will deffo weigh more than coins tho

The OP's puzzle was using bars not the coins used in the answer you googled.

To be fair I only got this so quickly cause I've heard it before too.

that`s very true. I knew how to do it because we did all sorts of these things at school and they stick in my head (so I didn`t really solve it in 8 seconds, that`s just how long it took to remember). I did look online to see how to explain it better though and they use coins in the only decent explanation although reading through that just confused me

Didn't get frustrated at all mate. I looked at it for about 30 seconds and knew it was really difficult so thought I'd go for ridiculing liars who claimed they solved it in 8 - 15 seconds instead.

This inflated my ego enough to let me get over the fact that I'll never know the answer and don't really care.

Actually cancel that second bit. Anybody got a link to the answer?
