Title: Quiz of the day
Post by: Jon MW on October 15, 2010, 12:22:11 PM
How much do you know about religion? (http://features.pewforum.org/quiz/us-religious-knowledge/index.php)

Quote
And how do you compare with the average American?

I got 12/15, given that a few of them are fairly US-centric I thought that was fairly reasonable.

I'd be very disappointed if he got less than 100%

that was an easy one!

How is it a bad question?

Ok at first glance you could say that Protestants see Christ present symbolically in Communion whereas Catholics see Christ 'actually' present in Communion. In a general net quiz this would be a pass but if you were to answer thus in a catholic theology exam it would be a very big 'fail'.
First you have to get past the fact that a large number of catholics, including priests and theologians do not actually think you can say that Christ is 'actually' or 'physically' present in Communion.
Then you encounter the group comprising: those who say he is 'actually, really, physically present (eg current Pope); and also 'those who would say 'physically present' but with qualification', you would hear a great deal of talk about how he is 'physically present' but by means of sacrament and one of the qualifying features of sacrament is that it is symbol.
So to ask a question about Catholic communion which diametrically opposes 'actual presence' with 'symbolism' is false to the core.

that's a lot of long words to excuse why you got a multiple guess question with only 2 options wrong

I think so, and it's a poor excuse. From the context it was clear that the question was regarding official Catholic doctrine - and that's what the answer reflected.

14/15 Got the (wtf) Great Awakening question wrong, the Communion one was obv, still a bad question though  ;bumwiggle;

It is absolutely amazing what theories are developed to create a valid internal logic to support beliefs that are very obviously absurd to anyone on the outside.

14, with same question wrong. Communion one is a perfectly acceptable question given it's wording. It was directly about the bread and wine, and official catholic dogma is unequivocal.

Edit: Oh, and I love the fact that atheists came pretty much joint 1st. Not particularly surprising I guess, we tend to be the most well-informed :).

You can say that again :D

I refuse to say any more on the matter until my religious spokesman mr kinboshi is present.

I'm an atheist and I was shite!

Only thing I know is, you can't feed that many people with so little food and not even Kinboshi can walk on water!

I got 9 and most of them were guesses.

The only one I knew with 100% certainty was that Joseph Smith was the founding father of the morman religion.

This was entirely thanks to SouthPark for dedicating an entire epsiode to taking the piss out of him and his followers.
