They won't be able to run normal Windows software. They have virtually no storage space. It's a glorified PDA.

Title: Re: help needed please santa is on his way Post by: Longines on November 23, 2010, 11:25:25 AM It's an operating system that's effectively designed for calculators, not laptops.
Can you stretch to £180 each? Argos have a number of refurb 10.1" netbooks with 12 months warranty that would be a much better bet. Personally I'd tell the 7yo they are too young for their own laptop. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Argos-Outlet/_i.html?LH_TitleDesc=1&rt=nc&_nkw=laptop&_sid=66512606&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1 Title: Re: help needed please santa is on his way Post by: Laxie on November 23, 2010, 11:28:22 AM No laptops in this house until they hit 13...and only if we can afford it. Which is why only the 18 year old has one. Seriously, if they need one for school work - get just one decent one for the lot of them to share. But one for each kid?! Not a hope.

Has done in our house too. Even the neighbours call to use it for their homework. If money is tight, saving up and buying one with decent specs just seems the safer option. They might not need it much now, but at least yer not screwed in another year or so when you've no choice but to buy one for school work. I guess times have changed :P Title: Re: help needed please santa is on his way Post by: sovietsong on November 23, 2010, 01:59:19 PM I was just amused by the school work thing as when I was young everyone got PCs "to do school work on" and people spent £100s ensuring they had encarta or some bollocks and everyone just used them to play Duke Nukem and Syndicate. Have you considered getting a desktop as an alternative to a laptop? Title: Re: help needed please santa is on his way Post by: gatso on November 23, 2010, 03:35:38 PM maybe get them an umbrella each. much cheaper than a laptop and as a bonus can be used to keep the rain/sun off
In written records, the oldest reference to a collapsible umbrella dates to the year 21 A.D., when Wang Mang (r. 9–23) had one designed for a ceremonial four-wheeled carriage Title: Re: help needed please santa is on his way Post by: StuartHopkin on November 23, 2010, 03:52:06 PM Surely they would prefer this selection for Xmas?
