Title: SPOTY 2010
Post by: AndrewT on November 29, 2010, 08:58:09 PM
Tony McCoy - 1.96
Graham McDowell - 6.2
Lee Westwood - 10
Phil Taylor - 12
Jessica Ennis - 18
Amy Williams, Tom Daley - 21
Mark Cavendish, Graeme Swann, David Haye - 50

Phil Taylor finally gets included on the shortlist.

Given what happened with Giggs last year, McCoy looks awfully skinny at odds-on.

Post by: Horneris on November 29, 2010, 09:02:00 PM
lol @ David Haye

McCoy gets my vote, in winning the national he completed his career dream and champion jockey for 15 seasons tells its own story

Although it could definetly be argued that he is more deserving of some sort of a life achievement award (same with Taylor)

This year solely i think McDowell wins hands down but because i want McCoy to win because i love racing i will vote for him.

McDowell will get my vote, basically because I have very little interest in horse racing.

taylor doesn't even play a sport and I'm not convinced that the 3 above him are big enough houshold names, despite what they've done this year I'm not convinced the average bbc viewer who phones these things would know

in a public vote I make ennis massive @ 18

Really hope McCoy wins, really deserves to be recognised for the genius he is.

Hopefully the Grand National win will trigger enough votes,...... but can't have odds on!

Very open year. Swann an enormous price? Ashes happening now and popular sport. Darts and racing less mass appeal sports and gmac low profile for his odds

G-Mac for me but Westwood could be a decent sweat.
Better known to the general public. Not won a major but is World Number 1.
Won't be touching it though as it isn't an amazing line up. Nice to see no footballers there.

Tempted to back Ennis to lay later, same w/ Swann especially if he does something in the current Ashes.

Weakest line up ever?

2001, 06, 07, last year?

Winner won't be the strongest, but entire lineup of 10 looks ok to me.

Title: Re: SPOTY 2010

Wish Taylor would finally get it.  He is so dominant in his sport and the best ever in his sport.  If any other sportsman had his acheivements they would have won this 4 or 5 times already.  McCoy best jockey ever but very short here.  Agree Ennis is probably value but the trick to this is to lay all the runners when they are on screen during show and back back for a profit 10-15 minutes later.

how the fuck is Jake Cody not in this?

Cant see McCoy getting enough general public backing for this, the two golfers will probably cancel each other out otherwise I would have said one of them, I'd love to lay Jessica Ennis.

I would actually kinda like to see Phil Taylor win, even though its totally lol considering him an athlete, because imo he is the biggest personality of the bunch and dominates his field more than any other. Also he probably was a lot more physical than David Haye had to be in his career this year (as am I, typing this).

Mcoy obv and its not even close.. GMac had a great year admitedly however its still nowhere near Mcoys dedication/achievement over the last 15year+

Lol @ Westy, he hasn't actually won anything... He's number 1 due to coming 2nd lots!

Title: Re: SPOTY 2010
Post by: AndrewT on November 30, 2010, 01:20:31 PM
It is a shame that Taylor has finally got nominated in the year McCoy is favourite as they are probably the two people hardest done by in SPOTY recogition:sporting achievement ratio and I've love to see either win.

McCoy will probably pick up votes from everyone who bet on his horse in the National.

Also, there aren't actually many votes cast in this - last year Giggs won with 150k and no one else got more than 100k. They're not Xfactor/Strictly numbers.

Title: Re: SPOTY 2010
Post by: Horneris on November 30, 2010, 02:06:42 PM
If just 150,000 is enough to win it then no one needs to worry about McCoy not getting enough backing from the gen. public

All the courses have been campaigning for mccoy for the last 6 months to get him votes, he is the right price for it in a weak year, i cant be having any of the golfers, think they should be about 7s and 20s respectively.

Disagree. Jockeys hugely fit and brave

F1 drivers too, hugely fit and brave. Yes its the car but the drivers are superb. Many will disagree on this though

Agreed, it's a tough game, especially over fences and McCoy has made a winner of many horses that would not have been up to it otherwise. There's no doubt that there's a lot of physical exertion in being a jockey and what horse wins often depends on who is on it.

I'd love to hear the difference between darts and snooker!

Like I've said before, the award has no meaning until Taylor wins it, without doubt our contries greatest achiever over the last 15 years whether you like darts or not!

imo once someone is up for nomination everyone should disregard the what is a sport, what isnt debate, and judge the winner on their performance in their chosen field.

It's a one year thing. I hate hearing about people's career. Go win a lifetime achievement award. Thats why giggs winning was a joke.

The reason Taylor doesn't win is because people don't see darts as difficult. He's obviously mastered it but if you were to ask bookies for odds on Mark Cavendish ever throwing a 9 dart finish in his life and the odds of Phil Taylor ever winning a Tour de France stage I know which would be bigger.

just to clarify why I suggest you don't grasp logic

-my post uses the logical construct if A then B; A therefore B

if someone has been nominated then we can ignore the field for which they were nominated; betty has been nominated therefore we can ignore the field

-yours uses if A then B; C therefore D which is illogical, you are linking unrelated concepts

one of them should have it but Taylor got a more hyped up little story and entrance so he might well have it

Amazing! Same again, EVERYONE seems to know how phone votes are going when it's on the BBC.

Doesn't happen with ITV and CH4 anything like as much now. Love to know what's really going on. Someone must be cleaning up.

Betting suggests it's gonna be...

1. McCoy
2. Taylor
3. Ennis

McDowell on the drift.

Would be suprised if McCoy and Taylor werent 1 and 2 (in any order as both have tonnes of money, relative to the market obv, on them now)

The market speaks volumes on this one, phone votes appears to be closed.

McCoy now 1-4
Taylor 4-1 (in a place..6-1 available)

McDowell out to 7-1 (from 7-2)

Ennis 4th favourite @ 40-1

Looks like someone in the BBC has been talking to some people, if the market proves to be right.

Thanking Simon Fuller really says it all - he's the one who has made the Beckham brand what it is and ensured Beckham's fame and profile is out of proportion to his talents.

sooooo glad taylor didn't win it the smug prick!

the only bad thing is we'll have to put up with another thread on here next year with people going on about how he deserves to win and it's a travesty that he hasn't

my attitude was best summed up on a football forum today. 'it's not a sport if you don't have to change your shoes to play'

I see your point mate but flat racing is pretty boring compared to the jumps!
