Although I wasn't born until 1972 the impact of this disaster on family members who were there was always clear to me. The tragedy that occurred that day could have just as easily occurred in many football grounds throughout the UK at that time and if anything positive came from this disaster it was the improvements in fan safety that followed beginning with the complete rebuilding of Ibrox.
Here's hoping today's remembrance before kick off is observed by all in the ground today and that a decent game follows. Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: celtic on January 02, 2011, 01:03:16 PM RIP the ibrox 66

An oft forgotten tradegy in British football, especially south of the border. Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: TightEnd on January 02, 2011, 01:26:05 PM RIP
Good to see the silence respected so well before the game A good documentary on R5L about this one evening last week. Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: AndrewT on January 02, 2011, 01:26:55 PM Anyone know why Neil Lennon didn't come out of the tunnel until after the silence had finished?

Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: celtic on January 03, 2011, 09:17:22 AM Anyone know why Neil Lennon didn't come out of the tunnel until after the silence had finished? He was late coming out of the dressing room and the whistle for the start of the minute's silence had gone so decided to stay in the tunnel until it was over. RIP Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: ScotlandStu on January 03, 2011, 02:11:15 PM I was there, went into town after game knowing nothing of disaster. Got home to frantic wife (4 months married) still unaware. The closer you are to something, the less you know. The same thing happened to me at the Heysel Stadium. I am still pissed off that game was allowed to go ahead. Title: Re: RIP The Ibrox 66 Post by: Div on January 03, 2011, 02:51:24 PM I was there, went into town after game knowing nothing of disaster. I am still pissed off that game was allowed to go ahead. Amazing how many similar tales I've heard this week. Life before mobile phones and 24 hour news feels like a distant memory now. I was born four days before the game and was still in hospital with my mum on the day of the game. My dad (Celtic fan) got a lift to the game from my uncle and his mates (Rangers fans). After the game they went into town for a pint not knowing anything had happened. Then my dad headed up to the hospital where my mum was sick with worry, because news had spread through the wards about the disaster.
