Title: Staking model for friends investment Post by: Splash on January 04, 2011, 03:20:57 PM Over new year we had a house full of friends around and two of them ovr a few beers asked what sort of deal I'd offer them for £ investment. Speaking to them it would be £2-5k invested depending on wha tthe deal was but was asked to come up with a model per £1k investment.
They were thinking something along the lines of they give me £X upfront and this buys Y% of any profit over a given period. We bounced around a few ideas, non of which I was overly comfortable with ie paying back % profit per month etc etc. TBH dont really need the £ for staking as such but a few k locked in my back pocket before the year kicks off is not an unattractive proposition. It would be for all play but this would be 95% MTTs i think and I'd have to agree min play levels etc They are close all friends so I'm not looking to offer a bad deal for them... but not looking to give away the crown jewels either. Any ideas as to a balanced proposition? My OPR is here if it makes a difference. http://www.officialpokerrankings.com/ongamepoker/DonkeyJim/poker/results/62FB2E6EAD14431693B8707F272704D1.html?t=2 Title: Re: Staking model for friends investment Post by: AndrewT on January 04, 2011, 03:24:08 PM Are these friends poker players? Would they understand things like lots of variance and bad beats or are they likely to get worried when you go 3 MTTs without cashing?

Seriously are there any staked players who aren't in a ton of make up? surely most of these staking deals wouldn't go on if people weren't mates. Title: Re: Staking model for friends investment Post by: action man on January 04, 2011, 05:45:43 PM lol at broke them, the final figures were like £20k profit but they didnt understand the roll needed and the variance involved and couldnt financially support a downswing.
Also cos, mind your own business and i would appreciate it if u didnt post my private stuff on here. thanks Title: Re: Staking model for friends investment Post by: SuuPRlim on January 05, 2011, 02:19:37 AM Seriously are there any staked players who aren't in a ton of make up? surely most of these staking deals wouldn't go on if people weren't mates. Just had a very long facebook exchange with me ol' pal Jason Herbert r.e. this lol The main point to remember is being in MU does not mean that a) the backer isn't in profit of you, or b) you're a loosing player, if you're in $50k MU then all that means is since I last made profit I've lost $50k, could have made $500k prior to that It's a business that is high in risk if a) you're not comfortably rolled for the venture (and it's always more than you think) or b) you're unsure if the horse is +EV. If you're confident that the player is +EV and can support them financially then it's a pretty lucrative, low risk exercise. This isn't to say ofc ur point isn't kinda valid and people sometimes stake people in games, not 100% convinced they are +EV but more as a favour for their mates, thats not great business, but then it prolly doesn;t need to be :) I can think of a couple of people in the UK who've done very nicely from staking people :) Title: Re: Staking model for friends investment Post by: GreekStein on January 05, 2011, 10:03:09 AM Also cos, mind your own business and i would appreciate it if u didnt post my private stuff on here. thanks Richard has asked me to post that he is infact an excellent poker player and has made monies for several of the UK's top stakers, including Royal Flush, Pab and Moorman. With some of the monies he made from these endeavours, he was able to lend money to both of the friends he broke. :) P.s love you Trigg. P.p.s. I heard you're going to the PCA. Is this true? Using those ^^^ numbers, what actually happened is that when $500k was made, it prolly got chopped up $250k each. Now you have lost $50k of stake money, if it ended there the player made $250k and the backer made $200k. At the other end of the scale, what might more typically happen is that a player has say a $2k stake on a 50:50 deal and sends say a total of $2k in profit share over the duration of the agreement. Then they go busto and think they can walk away because "I made more than the stake for you over time" In reality, they made $2k from their share of profits over time and the backer broke even. Absolutley a player in make-up obvs cant walk away. the point i was making is that a player in make up isn't a loosing player, as i recently had a long discussion about this and some people don't seem to understand. ***disclaimer*** Im not a staked mtt player so have no personal experience, but I do understand the system. |
