Title: blonde goes down.....
Post by: tikay on December 30, 2005, 02:39:01 PM
bondepoker.com experienced a short "down" in the last hour, we were offline briefly.

We understand the problem was with the Web Host, & affected all their sites.

All seems to be well now - sorry about that.

On a slightly more serious note, it looks like there was a connectivity issue with UKFast who host the Blonde server) as all their sites were unreachable. The blonde server didn't go down, it was just hiding.  I'm awaiting confirmation of the what the issue was from UKFast.

the way you describe it, and the fact that blondepoker.com was reporting an IP from the DNS server, it sounds like one of their (or their hosts) routers died on the way into their network, hiding all the machines behind it. It wasn't down long enough for me to do a tracert to prove that however.

Yes, I suspected exactly the same thing.

Almost true, but here is a REAL problem for you, which has happened to me this afternoon. I have rung our Web Guys (though it was a non-blonde matter, but they are seriously geeky guys) & Mr Burns, who also claims to know a thing or two about computers, having made his living messing about with software for most of his life, & NONE of them could offer the faintest clue what I should do.

Today, I purchased a new keyboard & mouse, Microsoft jobbie, combined pack, wireless."Microsoft Wireless Multi-Media Keyboard 1.1".

Forget the Mouse, it works lovely.

But the keyboard does NOT. It came with a CD thing, which I downloaded properly, followed the step by step instructions. And it works just fine. Except....

The letters on the keyboard which I press do NOT correspond to what comes up on the screen. I press "B" & "C" comes up. I press "J" & "9" comes up. etc, etc.

WTF?

I have had to resort to my old, cranky keyboard.

(And when you have sorted this for me, we can start on how on earth I get music into my new MP3, or how I do a "restore" on my busted I-Pod. But the Keyboard FIRST please.....

Now that is strange.... it could simply be a faulty keyboard. Do you have friends with PCs? get one of them to test it for you. Or try it on ya laptop.

Ahh, same answer as Mr Burns gave me.

This type of problem can happen on programmable key boards.   These types of keyboards should have a Macro key and Suspend Macro key on the upper left corner of the keyboard.  Hold down the CTRL key, the Alt key, and the Suspend Macro key all at the same time.  This will clear any macros that have been programmed into the key board.

Thanks ifm.

I can find the CTRL key & the ALT key, but I can't find the MACRO or SUSPEND MACRO Key. Would they have some sort of icon?

check the Windows keyboard settings in Device Manager. Device Manager is located under the System icon (found in Control Panel)
If the keyboard is not installed or is incorrect, install the correct keyboard type.
Also, be certain that you have the correct language setting specified in the Keyboard Properties dialog box (found by double-clicking the Keyboard icon in Control Panel).

I was a responsible Mod....after a long morning at work doing sfa, I told Tighty in MSN it was down, finished me chat with him, and then sloped off home, knowing it would be fixed by the time I got here.

My tracers always go awry from work, because the network I am on is in the US, so it plays havoc with my results.

It happens, sites fall over - the good old Blonde got up and dusted it's gold lame trousers off and then got on with it :)

When I'm in an ultra lazy mood and just want to sit back on my sofa, whilst using my laptop. I don't want to use any more muscles than I need to so I do this.....

Click on

Start>Control Panel>Accesability Options>On-Screen Keyboard

I can then type away (very slowly) without having to overly exert myself by leaning forward to press the keys. Just laze away with my cordless mouse.
It's useful if you ever find yourself completely up the spout with no keyboard whatsoever.

There's a magnifier there too for you visually impaired types. Thankfully I never need this, but judging by the amount of hours per day I spend staring at a computer screen, it's only a matter of time.
