Title: Watch recommendations Post by: StuartHopkin on March 10, 2011, 03:17:35 PM Kind of a blatant brag thread but not really meant to be.
Will be buying a new watch in the coming months and want something that in theory will last me a good few years. Been looking at the http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/carrera/men/automatic-chronograph-tachymetre/index.lbl?w=CV2010.BA0786 Anyone got any recommendations or seen anything that looks nice recently. Pretty sure ffffeeeeeeelips and Gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrprit like their watches. Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: mondatoo on March 10, 2011, 03:20:46 PM Tag FTW, I like the Monaco one.
Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: TheChipPrince on March 10, 2011, 03:25:13 PM Nothing like on the same scale, but really like the Storm watch I got last year, if you like something as bit different.
Is there anywhere you can get a Tag, maybe refurbed or an older model for 50% cheaper? Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: Longines on March 10, 2011, 03:45:45 PM You looking at new new, or just new to you?
Omega Seamaster at that price point floats my boat (dum tish). Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: Graham C on March 10, 2011, 03:53:25 PM Quite like the Bell and Ross watches myself, bit different.
Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: RED-DOG on March 10, 2011, 04:25:39 PM This is certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but I've worn it 24/7 for the last 10 years. It's not fancy, but it's virtually indestructible. The glass doesn't scratch, the cases is one piece (no opening at the back) and it never needs a battery.
It comes supplied with a Kevlar strap, but I had Citizen exchange it for a titanium bracelet with an expander when I bought it. Cost back then ~ £450. This is a poor image, but you will find plenty of info if you google "Citizen Tough" (http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS850w55N7nbeHgVqqBfpA9GgLrvlSx5k4RQ70Oa8aFZApcpV9DCw&t=1) Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: titaniumbean on March 10, 2011, 05:01:14 PM Understated ftw

Pretty sure ffffeeeeeeelips and Gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrprit like their watches. Don't get an automatic unless you plan on wearing it almost every day, I have one that's been in it's box for the last three years as I can't be arsed re-setting it all the time. Tag make really good quality watches that will last for years and while they aren't cheap they are pretty good value compared to some similarly priced brands. It really depends on what your budget is though, I would recommend speaking to a sales consultant at Watches of Switzerland, even if you did end up actually going elsewhere to buy a watch, they are really very knowledgeble on the brands they stock. I've never actually bought a watch from them but have got so much good info just going in for a new battery. Maybe it's an older model now (it was definitely a Carrera), but I much preferred it to any of the ones on their site currently (terrible site too).

I have two expensive watches that I don't even wear now because of that. Not buying another one for that to happen again, I just buy cheap fakes now and change them as I fancy or when they break.

Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: Free_Rollin on March 14, 2011, 11:56:02 PM Wiiiiiii... I'm pretty excited for you Stu.
The watch you've posted in your opening post is pretty nice, and I think it's a good choice. I have the Calibre S (SLR Limited Edition Version). http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/carrera/men/calibre-s-laptimer-chrono/index.lbl?w=CV7A10.BA0795 I'm pretty happy with mine, and it's a cool watch. I'm not a big fan of Monaco's, but obviously each to their own. I think the Carreras, like the one you and I have posted, are the way forward. I'm also a pretty massive Breitling fan, but more so, the Breitling for Bentley editions. http://www.breitlingforbentley.com/en/series/motors/bentley-gmt-presentation-1-1 This is like one of my favourite ones, and I'm hoping to get one in the near future! Wildcard - Audemars Piguet. It's a bit more exclusive, not as common. Their watches are a bit different from style that Tag Heuer usually do, but I think they have a really good range, and you might find one that you like. http://www.audemarspiguet.com/ Another one, Patek Philippe. I don't really know much about their watches, but I have heard they are pretty good. Might be worth looking into when you are bored in the office. Rolexs - not a fan at all. I think Rolex is just a name these days. They're obviously good watches, but I think there's so much other stuff out there that's much better, especially considering the price you will be paying for a long term timepiece. I generally think Rolexs suit the older generation much more, and think I might be happy to have one when I'm 65. Out of interest, are you bothered about the strap? Does it need to be metal, leather, rubber, etc? Also, I'm guessing this is going to be case anyway, but a couple of watches I have seen just seem so different on the internet when compared to in person. I really suggest going to a good store, such as Watches of Switzerland, and take a look and see what you like in person. Obviously, you can take down model numbers and see if you can get a better deal elsewhere. Lastly, not sure if you was with us when we went into this store in Vegas last year, but their collections were fantastic. If you are likely to be going this year, see if you can hold out. It probably will be cheaper too, but not 100% sure on this. Title: Re: Watch recommendations Post by: Rotty on March 15, 2011, 01:27:15 AM Wildcard - Audemars Piguet. Stu is definitely baller enough to be sporting a Audemars. |
