Title: Petrol in my Diesel car, I'm a prat.
Post by: yt on December 31, 2005, 11:48:12 AM
My only saving grace is that I created a 60/40 mix of diesel/petrol so I don’t seem to have done any permanent damage but will have to see what happens over the next week or so.
Didn’t realize Id done it at the pump and drove 70 miles. First 20 miles there were no problems. Last 50 miles I had problems accelerating and it sounded rough. It was only when I checked the filler cap on advice from my missus(!) that I smelt the petrol. It’s a mondeo tdci 1 year old.
It cost £246 to drain/change fuel filter etc and the report from the garage has a big disclaimer about possible permanent damage to the engine....
Anyone else done this?
Should I cut my loses now, while it’s still running and trade it in????
or just run it and wait to see?
help me im a prat

Happened to my aunt  - had it drained it was fine - difference was that it was the garage (attendant served garage) that put it in - and they service the car regularly so they should know - they said it would all be fine - but they would wouldnt they!!?

I wouldnt worry too much then, if they gave the opinion that it should be ok, it probably will, they just wont commit just incase.

If you wanted to trade it in anyway, then now is the time obviously.

Dont hold me responsible though :D

I also committed the act of putting petrol in my deisel. it cost me £190 to have it drained. the funny thing is that i nearly did it again about 2 weeks later and my boyfriend shouted from inside the car, 'what you doing with the pertrol pump?' a near miss!!!!!!!!!!!!! my excuse is that i drive 3 cars, 2 of which are petrol. my family swap cars depening on the occassion. my mini people carrier acts as the family van when the seats come out and anything from washing machines to beds have been in there. the petrols are for comfort but it is confusing as putting fuel in is usually automatic pilot.#
as for selling your car. personally i wouldnt as my concience would bother me. im a great believer in ying and yang. what goes around comes around; you reap what you sew etc........ if you do it with bad intentions i fear you will have some payback at some point in your life. good luck anyway and i hope your motor is ok

Keep topping the tank up with diesel!!
Every petrol station you pass, even if it's a quid, it'll dilute the petrol further and further and reduce the chance of damage.

It probably should be ok, but one word of warning, if you have fouled up the fuel pump in any way, you will be looking at minimum a grand to replace.

I too am in the car doldrums this week, since the gearbox on my jag trashed itself on boxing day, after less than 50K miles. Been quoted over 3 grand to replace it. I am of the opinion it is a manufacturing defect for it to fail so soon....

It's a good idea to keep diluting any residual petrol by doing this so I will. just feel like a right plank. I just hope the car is ok!

I've driven petrols and diesels on and off for years and never messed up before. my mind was elsewhere.
thanks for your insights!

I don't believe in all that ying/yang so no issue for me! (what does a bombing victim/tsunami victim do to deserve that? is that ying and yang? if not why not? if you believe in ying/yang then it applies the world over all the time. it just doesn't add up imo.)
However I wouldn't dream of selling on to a person..... just feel ok with trading it in to a main dealer. it will be on warrenty for the new owner then!
thinking about it maybe me making this mistake was ying and yang at work! now which of the 10 bad things i did last week was it......

as for the tragic event victims, they dont deserve what happened and thats got nothing to do with ying and yan. thats crime, natural disaster, unfortuneate circumstances etc. karma is more a way of life. if you go around angry youll be met with defensiveness. if you smile, people return it (on the whole) if you live your life in a way that causes no harm or upset to people then i believe you will be happier. imagine the whole world could live in peace and harmony....i feel like singing that teach the world to sing song now.....lol  but im sure you can see where im going. on a negative note , there are a lot of unhappy, wandering, fruastrated folk out there and that creates disharmony for not just them, but others they come into contact with.  Viva happiness and contentment. take it while you can
