Hi folks, I'm playing a "shootout" style tournament in northampton next weekend with up to 64 players.

8 tables of 8 will start with 1300 chips , 25-25 blinds and 45 min levels. No rebuys. The winner of each table will progress to the final table of 8, all of whom get paid, and the runner up to the runner up table, the winner of which gets paid.

Any special advice for the format considering I'm used to playing freezouts with far deeper starting stacks online (10,000 with 10-25 blinds, 10 min levels)? The format to me does not seem to give a lot of time to find hands so should I be super aggressive from the start? How would you play it?

Advice appreciated - will provide a full report in return :D.

Nice tourney - is it a private game, or in a Casino?

Personally, I'd play it as a 1 table Sit'N'Go. Pretty much sit out early, monster hands apart, wait until the children have busted each other, then, when 4 or 5 handed, switch to super aggressive. If your oppos are half decent, they will recognize that you have not played a hand in half an hour, & you should get the first few moves through.

I don't usually give advice on how to play the game, but I got taken to task yesterday for not doing so. And SNG's (thougfh this is not one, but I see it as similar) are the one poker format that I consistently win money at.

...and I am certainly not qualified to give advice, but, I agree with Tony. Super tight early on, more aggressive when the numbers are down to 4ish.
I would probably address the final table in a similar manner although there would certainly be a contradictory arguement for starting the final table a little more aggressively as there is a good chance a lot of players will be looking at preservation rather than development.

This is true but you must be carefull, if your oppenets are aware of this standard SNG stratergy they will be expecting you to get aggressive. The problem with this is that they will know that you will be raising a lot of hands now, but also laying down to re-raises, as you have a tight imagie they arent going to re-raise with junk are they....? If they know this thne you never get an edge through the game! Countless times i have seen someone play ultra tight, then str8 after a level up get busy, i wait till they go for my blind and then stick it all back in at them, now of course there is another level of thinking where they might realise that i realised they are playing tight so are now playing aggressive but will now fold to a massive re-raise so....i am confused now.

I've never seen any evidence of Super-tight in your game phil. I know you have gears but I'm not sure that's one of them. I think your natural game will suit the comp ok because there's going to be plenty of people making sure they survive the early rounds and your aggressive style if mostly used in position will cause them some trouble. I would just resist the temptation to play anything marginal in early / mid position as you sometimes do and pick on survivors and limpers like you do on a wednesday. Really wish I could join you, sounds like fun.

Unfortunately due to family commitments I had forgotten to put in my diary (oops!) I could not play in this tourney.  There is another scheduled for Aug 7th with the same format so I will be playing in that.

Thanks for all the advice - will keep it in mind for August.  In the meantime back to the old maniac style for AdamM's game on Saturday  ;D
