Title: RSQ54. Pointless meets RSQ
Post by: TightEnd on April 20, 2011, 09:18:02 AM
Pointless, a BBC2 programme based on RSQ. Teams of two answer questions and have to find an answer that none of 100 respondents chose.

RSQ now meets Pointless

I am taking the ten questions below to the 4 day APAT festival in Newcastle this weekend and will ask 20 non- blonde players to write down answers to questions

I will then record for each question, how many said which answer

You send me PM answers to the questions in the normal way.

Scoring on the night relates your answer with theirs

For example. If to the question "Name a Queen" 19 of the 20 say Queen Elizabeth II and you do too, you get 19 points.

Your aim is to get pointless answers

PM me your answers by 7pm on Tuesday 26th April.

Please put RSQ 54 in the subject header and give the corresponding number for each question with each answer.

The reveal will take place at 8pm on Wednesay 27/04/2011 on this thread.

Scoring then relates to the sample of responders and not your fellow contestants. Your minimum score for each question is Zero, your maximum 20.

If you give an incorrect answer, you will receive the highest sample responders score + 5 points, maximum therefore 25 points. This is even if some of the respondents give the same incorrect answer.

No googling. Objections will be welcomed

Answer the following  You must Pass on one

1. A British City beginning with the letter "B"

2. A Grosvenor Casino that has hosted a GUKPT Event

3. A film in which Brad Pitt has starred

4 A Chemical element between 1 and 10 on the Periodic table

5. A US state on the Eastern Seaboard

6. According to "Visit London", currently, a top 10 London Tourist attraction

7. Name a country that is currently a member of the United Nations Security Council

8. Someone who is or has been a judge on Britain's Got talent

9. The name of a Motorway Service Area on the M1

10. One of the "top ten birds" recorded in English gardens according to the 2010 'RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch"

Good luck

As I am travelling today with printouts at hand for my respondents, these questions will not be changed

Oooh cool idea.

Are you asking them to provide one answer or as many as they can? On the show it is as many as they can I believe.

One answer. Simplicity.

Are they being instructed to the nature of the quiz? eg, on my quiz I had the question "name a make of car". Everyone (except trafficjam I believe) went for "ford". If your respondants are just putting obvious answers then choosing a pointless answer could become quite trivial. Whereas if they have to name as many as they can it gets around that.

they'll be asked to choose the first answer they think of

this will be different for different people

none of us will have time to rack brains for 15 answers, so lets see how it goes

You'll still have to show some nous to get a lot of pointless answers I think. A lot of the questions only have 8-12 possibles anyway

I've never understood why we MUST pass a question. On my quizes I always put them as optional. There's no reason as far as I can see to not use it but don't see why it needs enforcing.

Actually, from now on Tighty shouldn't get any passes. This is getting too easy for him :)

Nice idea - IMO.

Shamefully 1* I couldn't answer and 2 or 3 are complete guess work.

*Do people actually watch BGT?  Has it been on that long it has multiple judges?

4 A Chemical element between 1 and 10 on the Periodic table

Are you going to ask people for an answer until they give one that's correct, or are you just going to take their first answers right or wrong?

Also, are they allowed to use google?

Title: Re: RSQ54. Pointless meets RSQ
Post by: TightEnd on April 20, 2011, 02:34:23 PM
No they won't google. The questions are designed so nobody will get them wrong. If respondents do then the max score a player can get for that question will reduce accordingly

Richard osman is his name. Though I would imagine armstrong and his raffish charm get more girls. No one seems to want an enormous brain these days.

Nobody will get them wrong?  You sure?

Think you might be over-estimating your 20 'random' people at the APAT event.  There'll be plenty who don't know an atomic element numbered 1-10, and probably don't know some of the other answers either - not without prompting and guiding..

Title: Re: RSQ54. Pointless meets RSQ
Post by: TRIP5 on April 20, 2011, 03:47:50 PM
Hmmmmm

Tighty winning the RSQ = - 2ev
Reveal on a Wednesday = + 1ev
Totally pointless questions = + 1ev

Ergo overall RSQ54 score = evens ;)

xx

yeah i'm with nakor on this one.  my general knowledge is pretty reasonable i think but there are a couple there i'd struggle with.  not looked at a periodic table for 20 years so i'd be guessing on that for starters.

FML, whilst I listen to Tighty explain this to over 20 people during the next 4 days.

This will test Tighty's patience though, I reckon after the third person that says 'But why ?', he'll call time on the idea and we'll make up the rest in between updating the APAT events.

Answers submitted. Think I've got a good set of answers this week. One of them may possibly be failed but i'll be ready with an objection.

Slighty strategy shift this week. It was odd trying to not think what everyone else was going to do.

Title: Re: RSQ54. Pointless meets RSQ
Post by: Cf on April 23, 2011, 03:29:22 PM
On a normal RSQ you might occasionally go for the super obvious answer. Doing that here would be suicide. Also, you might avoid what you consider to be the best obscure answer as you think others will come up with it. But in this one they're being instructed to go with first thing that comes to their head so it should be safe.

I'm expecting the scoring to be very low. I wouldn't be surprised if the winner's score is a single digit. Promises to be interesting :)

In - the last time I entered I mulled over the obvious, took away the not so obvious and stuck a pin in the remaining answer(s). This time I'm using reverse tactics, i.e. I'm oblivious which may well work, but I doubt it, anything better than dead last will be amazing!

Ready to go at 8pm

Trip5 will not be included, sorry, 7.35pm on reveal night is too late. A principle worth keeping. Especially with the loud and bolshie.

Just to recap

I have 20 answers from a control group

For each question they will be posted first

I will then post the answers from our 21 players

The scores for our 21 relate to the control group only

A fail is scored as the highest control group answer + 5 points

time for objections...

then scores per round....

Pennsilvania does not have an atlantic coastline - or does that matter ???

i know this because i failed when i put it as an answer to a question asking for a state with an atlantic coastline a couple of months back.  I also remembered from checking it out then that it was considered an eastern seaboard state 8)

Can of worms that.  For instance Kelly Brook was a permanent judge, just got canned very quickly.

Penn is a seaboard state, multiple sources say so

any other motorway and i think it would have been harsh.  given that most blondes will have travelled up/down the M1 to get to places like DTD and/or blonde bashes i think it's fair enough.

Darn it, travel up to visit the Missus's family 6 times a year, they live in Durham and Whitley Bay.  The girlfriend has a bladder the size of a thimble so I can name all of those services.

Just done a quick google, I see it's on the A1(M).  Guess that doesn't count right?  Knew I should have gone with Wetherby.

I actually was never expecting to win one of these. Questions will be up tomorrow. I intend to keep the "Pointless" format as its worked well, so I'll think of 10 questions and ask 20 people in my office at work. And yes, this guarantees no weird questions.

I think it'd be better if the panel were told "name as many as you can". But I guess finding people with the time to waste isn't easy.
