Title: Quick technical question Post by: hector62 on May 30, 2011, 12:07:52 PM I am in the unfortunate position of being thought of as a technical expert to someone even older than me, unfortunate as i am not even close to an expert. In order to continue the ruse can someone please assist me with this situation.
They have an old PC running Windows XP and an internet router connected to it with a cable. They want to get a WiFi router so that their son can use his ultra modern laptop on line when he visits. Am i right in thinking that all they need to get is a new WiFi router that is XP compatible. I will connect the router to the PC with an ethernet cable and the laptop will be able to connect using the WiFi. Is it that simple or is there anything else to consider? You could also get a wireless dongle for the PC so you can have the router anywhere. Title: Re: Quick technical question Post by: Shogun112 on May 30, 2011, 03:07:20 PM Its sort of a little more than that...
Firstly... There are 2 types of wireless router.. If the internet is via Virgina cable (Or any other cable) is is a DSL router.... If it is via the BT phone line, it is an ADSL router... It is adviasable to buy the correct router as one will not work on the other....... Also.... Wireless.... There are various types of wireless that have evolved through the years... The older computers used to us 802.11a.... then 802.11b... then 802.11g... more recently 802.11n..... If you get a router that is capable of a, b, g and n... then it is more capable... if you buy a router that is older, and is only a b, and g.... and the laptop is capable of a, b, g, n... then the laptop wireless will not be working at its fastest... All routers typically have 4 port ethernet on the back so any routers really should be capable for the desktop pc... Its sort of irrelevant if it is XP compatible... Routers work irrelevant of operating system... |
