Title: Does anyone know anything about Ice Cream machines?
Post by: Bongo on June 02, 2011, 01:06:29 PM
I've just noticed that they are a lot cheaper than I thought and was thinking of buying one. Does anyone know if they're any good? I doubt I'd use one enough to justify the cost of an expensive one and they all look far bigger.

They make ice cream.  There ends my knowledge.

Well they're meant to, whether they do and whether it tastes nice is what I'm trying to figure out.

If your bread maker is stuck gathering dust in your cupboard then make a apace next to it for the ice cream machine. If you use the bread maker then you may get some use out of ig

The problem with bread makers is that loads of them produce a really poor approximation of bread. If the ice cream was like that I wouldn't use the machine.

Some bread makers make bread that is rather good and if the ice cream was good then I would use it as I love ice cream.

I saw a prog the other day, might've been britain's best dish and one of the contestants made icecream in one of those machines. judges said it was the best they'd ever tasted, you should get one of those ones

alternatively ben and jerry's is half price in tesco atm

So no one knows, Jason Herbert wants pics and the rest of you want some ice cream if it's good?

I know that ice cream machines have controls on the side with a numbered scale.  This numbered scale corresponds to the number of minutes the machine is on for.

We borrowed one from a family member last year and it was ok.   The main disapointment was that the machines are quite big but the ice cream you get is pretty small.  I had tubs of the stuff in mind when in reality, it's about enough for 3 small portions.  Tastes good when it sets properly,  can be dodgy if not, don't just put it in the freezer if it's not working, it's not even close to being the same.

What type did you borrow?

Checked with the Mrs, apparently we bought it!  It's a Nuo, only a cheapie, get what you pay for I guess.

Providing it churns and freezes at the same time that's all you want.

Get some recipes together and have fun experimenting..

The cheaper ones won't last as long, but you'll be bored with it by then

Are the ones where you freeze the bowl (or similar) and don't have their own refrigeration any good? Or does it need it's own freezer?

Need to freeze without outside help. It does it more gently as it churns making smaller ice crystals and a soother ice cream

Are there any of those for under £200 though?

oh, a couple of tips

1). Always make sure your egg yolks are cooked.

2). Don't add too much sugar, syrup, honey etc. It will make the ice cream too soft.

3). Same as 2). but with alcohol
