Title: Golf in Vegas
Post by: Chompy on June 06, 2011, 10:05:21 PM
Can't be arsed taking my clubs out there. Anyone got the lowdown on courses, clubs etc? How much? Best time? Buggy and clubs hire? Will they allow hackers like Celtic, The Sicilian and Pizzled on the course?

Played a shit load of courses out here.

Buggs are all included clubs are extra, better to bring own unless only playing 1/2 rounds.

Going to have a car?

Only there a week prob so won't play more than 2-3 rounds. No car. How much is a round on average?

Massively depends on which day you play and which course, June is cheaper though but expect anything from 60-300

Chompy, the courses are all a decent cab ride away (unless you want to pay $$$)  Buggies are included in green fees as standard.  As you have only just started out in golf, it is quite possible you will struggle to get used to a rental club and rental isn't cheap either.

Put another way, the cost of 3 return cabs to an offstrip course in say Summerlin and 3 club rentals >> renting a car for the whole week and taking your own clubs.

http://www.golfnow.com/lasvegas will give you a list of courses, but check with your hotel and direct with the course as you might get cheaper.

Earlier this year we played http://www.rhodesranchgolf.com - it's a good course for high handicappers.  It cost $110 including club hire - clubs were $45 but they were top quality.  The taxi was $40 including tip from the mgm.  Don't ever play Bali Hai it's way overpriced and wasn't in good condition when we played it.

Considering that I found it too hot in '05 to even walk the 500 or so yards from The Rio to The Gold Coast after about 10am, I reckon they're all bonkers.

This is what I thought, so I was confused as to how golf was an option.

Tee off at 6am, pootle/poodle round in a buggy while Celtic zigzags round using his patented left-hand-below-right grip. Plenty of water and it's fine. Apparently.

I rented brand new Callaways.  Nothing wrong with the club.  I just couldn't find the sweetspot with it.  It seemed like I was hitting everything fat.  So after several miserable holes, I deliberately tried to hit one off the toe and it came out the middle.  Maybe the shaft flex was wrong, maybe I'm bad at golf.  But once I worked that out, the rest of the round was fine.

Golf Clubs are free to carry on Virgin.

Tee off at midday - bonkers.

Tee off at 6am - go round in 3 hours and happy days.

6am is a going to bed time in Vegas FFS............

In the very old days, bed time was something that happened every 2-3 days, at whatever time of day or night I finally couldn't see.

In the old days, 6pm was going to bed time.  Wake up at 1-2am, go and jump in amazing games that ran all through the night.

More recently, the games are more likely to break up, so now I am more likely to play golf/laze by the pool in the morning, poker in the afternoon, dinner, then go and get drunk and be in bed for 2.

The first time i went to Vegas, a group of 4 of us managed to get a round at Desert Pines for $80 each including clubhire+buggy.
Top of the range Calloway clubs, and tokens for the driving range.  Excellent value.  Had a tee time of 06.30 and the temperature was just about perfect. This was early September.
