Title: mobile contract due for renewal, recommended phones/contracts?
Post by: geordieneil on June 10, 2011, 02:28:30 PM
my mobile phone contract is up for renewal from today, could do with some help choosing a new phone/contract............i'm with orange and have been for years so i normally get a good deal from them, the only problem i have with orange is that the internet coverage on their phones is a bit crap(maybe its just my area where the coverage is poor)

i'm not a massive user of the phone but would want somewhere between 400-600 minutes a month, unlimited texts and internet.

i currently have a blackberry curve, i know if i keep the same phone and just get sim only deal it is far cheaper, but as i've said the internet is really slow and would like something a bit quicker. (does anyone else have a blackberry thats not with orange?)

   feed back appreciated

regards GN

ps...not sure i'm interested in iphones....don't need to pay £35-£40 a month to look like a tw@t, when i can look like a tw@t for free ;) :P

I'm not myself and this is the first time I've strayed from Nokia but he's happy enough with it and says the internet is fine.

I'm sure there are some more knowledgeable ppl about who can help, they're probably the tw@ts with the iPhones too though  ;D

I've got a Desire - excellent for browsing.  There are probably faster Android phones out there at the moment as the Desire is over 12 months old now - so there might be alternatives.  If you want the phone for calls, texts, email and basic web-browsing then an android phone will do you fine.  Not sure what deals are about at the moment, or the 'best' android phones available at the moment.

I'm a tw@t without an iphone.

what network you on Dan?    i am very tempted by the desire, but my concern is oranges internet is poor at best. maybe a change of network is the order of the day....been with orange for about 12 years tho....bye bye loyalty bonuses   sigh

lol unlimited internet as long as u use less than 500gb, does make me laugh. i mean can you watch live streaming on the HTC Desire? if u can 3 hours will prob use 500 gb.

the cafe on the corner near the 3 pigeons, it was about 5 years ago, but the waitresses were so fit i ate 5 breakfasts a day in there :D

The Desire HD is better if you can get one of them (better in most ways - more powerful, better camera, more internal memory, better screen, but slightly larger, so that could be a big negative for some).

That deal from Orange sounds good - but only if you can get a decent signal :D

yeah my concern is the signal.....orange is pants for internet, but they teamed up with t mobile, so surely should be fine with 2 networks.

dan, can u watch tv on the desire?

When I'm out and about I sometimes watch Sky Sports on my phone with very few problems. I've also watched dodgy streams of boxing (De Gale fight recently) on my phone. The browser on Android supports flash so as long as the site doesn't require a specific plug-in it'll work fine. As long as you have a connection of course. I'm on T-mobile so we should have the same coverage now? Mine's not usually too bad.

Battery life gets hammered if you do a lot of this sort of stuff. So better if plugged in, or alternatively get yourself a few spare batteries if you're away from a charger for a day or so.

Managed to persuade orange to give me the HTC Desire HD Black
600 Mins
ultd texts
500gb internet
50 pic messages

For (i think) a very reasonable £17.50 p/m (vat inc)

I'd check which of the networks cover your area best* and then go for the HTC, I have a Wildfire which I love and got as part of a deal with an internet dongle from Vodaphone for £20 a month.

*by best I mean actually work, I have a friend whose mobile won't pick up in doors so she has to get in the car and drive up a hill to make a phone call!

V similar here living right out in the sticks. Orange offer a 25% discount to us - which would be nice, but the fact there is zero coverage!!

Saving 17.50 a month HTC v iPod sounds fantastic and v tempting. I take it HTC plays its music as MP3's...and there ain't too much difference?

i had similar problems in my last house, with orange some phones have uma signal option, where u can use your home broadband wifi as a booster, worked great for me

Well i got my new phone yesterday, and love it. very surprised of the amount of great stuff that came preloaded.
loved the gizmo that allowed me to copy all my contacts (used to hate the retyping of all your contacts everytime you get a new phone) and also an option to copy all my SMS'S from my old phone.....great little gizmo, some important and useful messages  in there.......so press accept i did...............................

THEN

Without warning from orange about this, it started to resend every f**king text i have ever sent or recieved from the last year to every f**king contact i had on my phone......including family, friends, enemies, ex girlfriends, one night stands, ex employers, future employers.........basically everyone. 1 mate of mine has recieved over 900, his phone was beeping every 20 seconds for 8 hours straight, and was obviously pissed off come 11.30pm when he wanted to go to bed, but his phone was his alarm and couldn't even turn it off.

Phoned orange several times to try and stop this.....the usual "its out of our control, its an android/htc issue and its not our fault"................OH WONDERFUL!!!!.....Yeah, but why the fricking hell couldn't you of warned me that this may happen

FML

PS..........I THINK THE PHONE IS GREAT STILL  ;)

Really don't know, i delete most "unimportant" texts, several thousand got sent and i don't think that i have that many on my old phone........so my guess is, is every text i've sent or recieved deleted or not since i first used my old phone

[ ] i am really happy with this situation
[ ] my contacts are probably happy too
[X] still like my new phone :D

take this as a warning to others getting a new htc desire.............dont use the copy sms ;)

SMS backup is your friend for the future.  You can then delete all your texts every now and again, as they will all be backed up to your gmail account.

Handcent SMS is also a better app for sending texts than the default app.  Not sure how good it is at sending 900 texts in a short space of time though... :D

Even with unltd txtxs there's a limit on how many you can send so you may get charged.

lol, orange have had me shouting like a mad man down the phone for 2 days, i think being charged is highly unlikely........my paying if they did, is less likely again

as it goes they have taken full resposibility(well blame htc) for it and gave me 2 free months...........its the poor feckers who recieved 100's of texts i'm worried about ;)
