OK before red dog the mad dog comes on and says have you tried to turn it off and on



my OLD dell precision m90

turn it on and this message comes up.

the ac power adapter type cannot be determined. the system Can only boot with a 130 w power adapter or greater.
strike the f1 key to shutdown.
to resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter.

i cant do anything with it i bought a new power lead about 6 months ago from e bay and it was working fine?
now all of a sudden this comes up?

Have you tried to reseat the power adapter?

Ur 3rd party adaptor from eBay is faulty. Get a new one

even though it worked for 6 month's?

This is the kind of help I'd expect from you.  Got a hop when I realised ya actually do know the odd thing or two about lappys.

a quick search shows i can buy a non dell adapter to fit for about £14
an original cost about £30

if i buy and it don't work will be pi55ed off
if it was to work don't mind paying......lol

does it happen every time you turn on the computer?  I get this message periodically (using the adapter that came with the lappy) - I just hit f1 and everything's fine and dandy.

edit: just re-read op.  I get a different message - says press f1 to continue. Ignore everything i just said.

I'm using my original power lead and I get this message every time I start my lappy. Everything seems to work fine though  :dontask:

mine is stuck on this message unless i hit f1 and it just does what it says on the tin and shuts down.

does it still seem to be supplying power though?  have you tried switching it on without it being plugged into the mains?

yes it only worked  when it was  plugged in cos the batt is well and truly gone

if i try without the power lead it wont even power up

Electrical items go faulty...fact... try a new adaptor..if you buy one by mail order/ebay etc..you can always return it via long distance selling laws...  There are other possible things it could be...you could have a main board problem where its misreporting ... the ac pin to the board could be damaged...dry joint etc.... but go for the adaptor first..

Failing all that, have you tried shaking it? ;)

been having a read up...sounds like main board or power block...with the price of laptops what they are i would buy a new one rather than repair

as long as u can send it back its worth a try...but with the further investigation  sound more serious..:(

Some Dell laptops were a bit prone to power problems in so much as the socket in the laptop, which is soldered to the motherboard, can get dry joints and cause issues..  ie.. plug in and out so many times causes it to come loose...

Also... One other thing I have seen plenty of...  If a battery is old and knackered, take it out of the laptop and run the laptop battery free... A dead battery can sometimes stop the laptop working from the AC adaptor..
