Title: Demographics Quiz
Post by: thetank on June 28, 2011, 11:20:47 PM
Was going to do this round in an upcoming pub quiz and thought I'd give it a trial run here first. They'd get a printout of this at the start of the quiz and get to fill it in as we do the other rounds and eat sandwiches.

Below this list of categories are 21 boxes. Each box has the names of the top 5 countries for one of these categories. Match the category to the box number, for example…

Largest Countries (‘000 sq km) … Box Fourteen

Largest Populations (Millions)
Biggest economies (GDP, $bn)
Highest GDP per head
Largest defiicits ($m)
Highest Consumer Price Inflation (2009 %)
Largest Industrial Output ($bn)

Top 5 producers of…

Rice (‘000 tonnes)
Coffee (‘000 tonnes)
Raw Wool (‘000 tonnes)
Oil (‘000 barrels/day)
Automobiles (‘000 cars)

Proven Oil Reserves (% of world total)
Highest rate of Unemployment
Largest class sizes (pupils per teacher in Primary Schools)
Largest fertility rates (average number of children per woman)
Highest life expectancy
Lowest life expectancy
Nobel Prizes for literature (no of wins 1901-2009)
Gold medals at the Winter Olympics
Defence spending ($bn)

a negative deficit should be a surplus also it isn't clear what deficit they are on about.

i see what you mean. ie USA has a defecit of X amount of $ as opposed to USA has a defecit of -$3gazillion meaning it is actually +3 gazill. I take it to mean straight amount. In which case it would be a negative figure. Unless i just got the question wrong which is highly likely.

I was just being pedantic - there isnt anything else that fits a "negative" answer, so doubt you are wrong.  However you might be a bit out if you think that the USA has inflation of 19.3% ;)

towards the end i just started throwing boxes all over the gaff, i am no geog whiz by any stretch. I just remember inflation going bananas in zimbabwe with people paying £300 for a loaf of bread but i couldn't see that as an option so i went for Nigeria.

not 14 unless you think russia have won 17,000 gold medals and it can't be 19 unless there's some weird combining of east, west and normal germany into a supernation who've then wiped all memory of the soviet union from history

box 16 is the only one with numbers that are realistic enough to maybe be a single olympics. problem with that one is it has uk at 11 and the uk doesn't compete at the olympics and even if we did we'd never win 11 golds at a winter games

Thanks for pointing this out, will add a (excluding Soviet Union 1956-1988) to the question.
All the data from 'Pocket World in Figures 2011 edition' published by the Economist magazine.

To be fair there is a footnote to the Olympic table which reads

"Table excludes Soviet Union medals (1956 to 1988) and as the Unified team in 1992."

During this time (the '56-'92) they won 87 golds. Russia has won 38 golds since and appears 9th on the table.

There is no note about Germany, but I'm assuming they've counted medals won by both East Germany, West Germnay and Germany Germany.

I'm assuming the reason they did this was that East and West Germany combined to make a larger country while Russia split up to make smaller countries. They can say that East and West German medals were won by athletes from an area now called Germany. The same of course, cannot be said about Soviet medals.

Not a perfect way to do things perhaps, but that's the way they've done them.

that may be due to wikipedia articles having wrong figures though

Same here, I'm getting 122 for uber-Germany.

Thanks to gatso, instead of going to bed, it looks like I'm going to spending the next wee while on the internet trying to get to the bottom of this. Either wikipedia or the data table I have from the wee book-e thing must be wrong.

Title: Re: Demographics Quiz

I checked to see if they've maybe included medals won before 1956. Doesn't look like that's the problem.
Germany only got 6 in the period before then, which still leaves us 11 medals short.

I'm going to check wikipedia info for Norway and the US (1956-2010) to see if they add up to the 105 and 87 quoted in the table.

Title: Re: Demographics Quiz
Post by: thetank on July 04, 2011, 01:26:10 AM
Can't get them to add up either. I'm getting 76 golds for Norway and 70 for the USA. (book quotes 105 and 87)

Cheers, massive typo on my part. Copy and pasting another box and failing to change it properly.

Box 1 should be Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Myanmar, Ghana, Yemen.

Thanks for spotting it
