Nov/dec it's a beautiful city
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: boldie on July 16, 2011, 12:08:43 PM New york is amazing and I highly recommend it...but not for 1-1.5k is that includes flights, hotel and spending money

Went there approx 10 years ago for the first time was cheap as chips then (and hardly anyone spoke English, which was superb). Went again 3 or so years ago with the Mrs and it's a lot more expensive then...definitely can do it on 1-1.5k though...but New York is pretty much out on that budget....Hell, 1k is just spending money for New York for a week. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Woodsey on July 16, 2011, 12:30:12 PM New Orleans is fucking awesome for a lads trip if you want to do the US!
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Girgy85 on July 16, 2011, 01:50:21 PM I'm going to Vegas next December for my ma's 60th.
New York is 2nd on the list of places to visit and my mate wants to go too. Budget is for just flights and hotel. Spending moneys is separate. Just need advice on what areas of the city is best to stay in. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: mondatoo on July 16, 2011, 01:55:39 PM Spin the budget up on the horse's so you can have a balla trip in NY.
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Girgy85 on July 16, 2011, 01:59:20 PM The budget is for my friend.
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: boldie on July 16, 2011, 02:21:30 PM The budget is for my friend. 1-1.5k for flights and hotel only? Oh that's fine for NY mate. I haven't been to NY on a "Boyz trip" so wouldn't be able to tell you where to stay but you should be alright for that Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Royal Flush on July 16, 2011, 02:25:14 PM I'm guessing you can get a flight for a monkey? Then looking for a hotel at about $150 a night, assuming you are sharing s room that gives ~$300 night for a hotel so just about doable
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Girgy85 on July 16, 2011, 02:41:46 PM What areas tho? Any hotel recommendations?
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Longy on July 16, 2011, 02:43:21 PM NYC is awesome but as others have said frickin expensive, especially accomodation wise. You really want to be staying in Manhattan and for anything that isn't completely tez it is £100+ a night. Anywhere in midtown Manhattan is probably the best location imo.
If you want something nice but budget have a look at staying in Jersey City, even the stuff right on the hudson are considerably cheaper than Manhattan and it is a 5 minute train ride into down/midtown Manhattan. As Woodsey said if you don't want to go to Vegas. New Orleans is the 2nd best "party" town in the US imo, problem is you can't get a direct flight there from the UK. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Longines on July 16, 2011, 04:48:14 PM I've stayed at the Park Central a few times for work. Good location for downtown tourist stuff, popular for flight crews which is usually a good sign. Can usually get it for less than £100/night.

Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Longy on July 17, 2011, 01:02:57 AM What's the food like in NYC ??? That is bit like asking what the food is like in London. You can pretty much get any type of food you can think of and if you know where you are going it is pretty awesome. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: boldie on July 17, 2011, 11:42:01 AM What's the food like in NYC ??? Iz you crazeeeeeeeee? Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: thediceman on July 17, 2011, 12:29:10 PM What's the food like in NYC ??? With over 25,000 restaurants in NY I'm sure you will find a few decent ones. http://www.michelinguide.com/us/nyc_stars_2011.html Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: millidonk on July 18, 2011, 09:54:50 AM Strictly from a tourist point of view NY is the abso nuts imo, have been to a shit load of places and not one has been as good as NYC at Xmas time. Went with the missus so can't really talk from a clubbing point of view, but we nailed a tonne of restaurants, bars and attractions in the 10 days.
We stayed here :http://www.destinology.co.uk/new-york-city/hotel/the-westin-new-york-at-times-square/11727/?gclid=CN62p--1iqoCFRYf3wod6yk1zA (http://www.destinology.co.uk/new-york-city/hotel/the-westin-new-york-at-times-square/11727/?gclid=CN62p--1iqoCFRYf3wod6yk1zA) abso amazing location, it says 4 star but i haven't stayed in many 5s with better service. Right on Times Square. Can walk to most places and there is a subway on nearly every corner. There is a website where you can buy bulk packages and stuff from over here and you just get the tickets while you are over there (will check my emails see if i can find it) saves you money, you are guranteed a ticket and there is no chance of getting ripped off by touts like what happened to my mates. I did a bus tour where it takes you too a tonne of things, you get out have a walk around etc then i just went back and did the bits i wanted to see more of or just visit again. Empire state and SoL weren't the main things for me. I liked FAO Schwarz, Grand Central, Ground Zero, Central Park, Ripleys believe it or not and all the Lennon stuff. Just riding in a genuine yellow cab and going to china town etc was class. The abso nuts tho and what is a must imo is going to see something at Madison Square Gardens, i saw NY Knicks vs Miami Heat and it was insane! Cheerleaders fire out Tshirts from pressurised cannons and i caught one, obv it didn't fit.. they serve tequila cocktails in flashing mugs which get you smashed. Just sitting next to the away fans i found really weird. Amazing though! As most people have said its not the best choice for nailing and getting smashed, but if you have defo made up your mind i would say get as close to Times square 40-60th street as poss, not sure about any real cost savers as i did my bollocks. Well worth it. Well worth it. Yea, mega valoooo 4 money. There were a couple floating around, we went with the one where they also take you on the staten island ferry and stuff. Our guide proper knew his shit and was happy for us to spend longer at places if we liked it etc. When he was talking to us at the WTC site he started crying, which also set a load of women off. This was in 2009 and i'm guessing he does it 2-3 times a week. Made me realise how much of an impact it still has on new yorkers to this day. Craziness. Forgot to mention Wall street is decent as is the singing diner, but ive forgotten its name. Obv!! places been with my missus = Rome, Pisa, Florence, Vegas, NY and Mauritius... Places with mates = Kavos, Riga, Tallinn, Amsterdam, Prague and Vegas. In case you was wondering Vegas with mates >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vegas with missus. Obv Although i think girgletron has made up his mind he wants to go to NY. I also suggest watching home alone and Ghostbusters before going. Makes it even better! Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: redarmi on July 18, 2011, 12:18:51 PM Surprised people are saying to gon somewhere else. NY is just about the greatest city in the world and I don't think it has to be expensive really either unless you want to eat at top restaurants etc. Pretty much wherever I go these days i use the priceline name your own price thing and I ended up with a room at the Intercontinental on 44th street for $100 a night so it doesn't have to be crazy expensive for accomodation if you are flexible. In terms of places to stay then basically anywhere in Manhattan is fine. You are going to be doing a lot of travelling around and walking so as long as you are below 100th street is fine and even Harlem is fairly decent these days.
If you want as close as you can get a. American working class experience then get yourself out to Belmont Park or Aqueduct for a days racing. Trains from Grand Central Station and if you have a winning day treat yourself to some oysters and bubbly from the Oyster bar at the station on your way back. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: boldie on July 18, 2011, 12:39:24 PM Don't get me wrong, if it was up to me MrsB and myself would always go to NY on our holidays. Only reason I said to go somewhere else was because I thought Girgy and his mate each only had 1.5K to spend for the entire thing. If you have plenty money; NY wins every single time, for me.
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Girgy85 on July 18, 2011, 02:53:31 PM Were mates and both want to visit NYC if I wanted advice on where's best to go for a stag do I'd of put that in the title.
We may just do 5 days but upto £1.5k is fine for accom and flights. Gonna take about same again for spends. That's cool and as redarmi mentioned Priceline "name your own price" is the nuts for decent hotels at a reasonable price. Though I did try and fail with NY last year upto $150 might well have been the dates I was going. Hotwire is a good back up if you fail with priceline. Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Girgy85 on July 18, 2011, 05:35:43 PM Cool cheers for all the recomendations.
Title: Re: Holiday Advice (New York) Post by: Josedinho on July 18, 2011, 07:20:54 PM I went 2 years ago with mates. Had a really good time. Can't offer any advice on accommodation as we stayed with a friend.
Only advice would be to sort out what you want to do when you're there before you go. The lads I went with weren't bothered about any of the touristy stuff we went to Central Park one day and also visited ground zero. I really wanted to go up Empire State but the others just wanted to hit a bar. One day we went and they were queuing out the door so I had no chance persuading them. Luckily we passed it later in the week and it was dead and they came along. Probably easier when there is only two of you but you don't want to spend all that cash and feel like you've missed out on something you really wanted to do. |
