Title: Norway Post by: kinboshi on July 23, 2011, 08:10:18 AM First the bomb in Oslo, then the indiscriminate murder of over 80 at a youth camp.
Seems to be all the more shocking because it's young people. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14259356 Title: Re: Norway Post by: Josedinho on July 23, 2011, 08:36:42 AM Horrible stuff. Went to bed thinking that although it's still upsetting, after a bomb attack and a gunman on the loose that they were lucky to have deaths limited to 10. Woke up this morning shocked although not sure age makes a difference to me.
Title: Re: Norway Post by: ACE2M on July 23, 2011, 09:26:40 AM horrific. RIP.
Title: Re: Norway Post by: smashedagain on July 23, 2011, 09:42:31 AM i spent a lot of time yesterday speaking to my mate Jan Bjorsland from Norway. Some of you may know him from playing pretty reg at dtd last year. He works on security at the parliment and was luckily enough to be working the night shift so was at home when the bomb went off. thoughts with Norway
Title: Re: Norway Post by: Claw75 on July 23, 2011, 10:40:00 AM incredibly sad and shocking, and, rightly or wrongly, the fact that so many of the victims were very young does stir up emotions much more for me.
RIP Title: Re: Norway Post by: Woodsey on July 23, 2011, 11:26:12 AM Shocking sure, never understood what age has to do with the shock value though tbh.
Title: Re: Norway Post by: boldie on July 23, 2011, 04:29:32 PM Shocking sure, never understood what age has to do with the shock value though tbh. This, 91 people shot and blown up is pretty horrific no matter what their age is. Amazed they captured the guy alive TBH Also despise the Daily Mail again (as usual) "http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2017851/Norway-attacks-gunman-Anders-Behring-Breivik-right-wing-extremist-hated-Muslims.html" Amazing how they sneak in Muslim terrorists in the coverage of this story. Title: Re: Norway Post by: nirvana on July 23, 2011, 06:37:57 PM Out of interest, do those who don't find the young ages of the victims more disturbing have chlldren ?
I think it's natural to see it as slightly more tragic than if it was a party of much older people due to the lack of having lived anything like a full life with all the opportunities that would present. On the Amy Winehouse thread it seems to be more emotive for people cause she was only 27, whereas if she had been a 65 year old soak I don't think people would bat an eyelid. Nah, if someone goes into an old folk's home and starts shooting the place up, killing 84 people the same people won't go "Ah well, they had a good innings". Not sure whether having kids or not really makes a difference to your outlook on things. Only time I can recall off the top of my head being genuinely moved to tears by a news story was following the dunblane massacre and that was long before became a mother Title: Re: Norway Post by: kinboshi on July 23, 2011, 08:13:13 PM expexting another post deleted by kinboshi for jingoism now. :) Is that what you expect? Title: Re: Norway Post by: Manuel on July 24, 2011, 07:57:42 PM I'm just really heartened that in this day and age when you repeatedly get nutters using the dramatic killing of scores of people in order to draw broad attention to their crazy little manifesto, that the media especially permanews channels collectively decide refuse to encourage them, and instead give the story only a brief mention at the very end of the bulletin.
